Great video, but yeah that barn was a too tight of a space. A 1S whoop would have done great in that environment. I was hoping you would rip the 3" a little faster in the yard. Flying around the chairs and trampoline was cool! I'm glad you had fun with it! :-) Oh, and if those 3018 2-blades are giving you jello, try the 3016 3-blades. Regarding the latency, the important thing to understand is that the DJI goggles show you the average latency, which is smoothed over time. The issue with DJI for fast proximity flying and racing isn't the average latency. It is the consistency. Whenever the DJI system looses some data it waits, retransmits the data, and displays it late. That could be a single frame and then it is OK again. Sometimes, when latency starts to increase it lowers the compression quality so that it can catch back up. That speeding up and slowing down is what is really problematic when you are racing or flying fast in close proximity to objects. I'm not saying you can't race DJI. You obviously can. But I am saying that there is a real difference which I can feel even at very close range, and the average latency in the goggles doesn't tell the full story. It's like advertising the average frame rate of a game, but what you really need to know is, "can it hit the v-sync rate every time without fail". I love the DJI system too, don't get me wrong. I use DJI on some of my larger drones that I fly more casually, but for racing and fast proximity I have been choosing analog most of the time. Now Shark Byte is another option in those situations.

@@pooljunki1 I imagine also in to 15-20ms range. Plus realistically it would be awesome to measure control to image latency. Toggle to pixel, and I imagine it would be close to 50ms for most of the systems (Even analog afaik is 10-15ms, controls say 7-8ms, 1frame = 16ms on 60hz dji would probably claw back 8ms there due to 120fps/hz + some processing - 40-50ms). Probably fairly doable with some 240fps+ camera looking inside the goggles + long wire led put inside the goggle too that wired to the quad and togglable with a momentary switch.

You have not yet covered the point of the fixed latency for sharbyte. I think it is its main advantage. I really would love to watch a video where you engage extreme manoeuvers with a dji and a shark byte system on "equivalent as possible" 5 inch quads. In my experience, it is when there are huge voltage spikes that the DJI system is having the worst of its performances regarding latency. Two times I even had blackouts on the free fall phase of a powerloop. I guess we can all agree that for explorative flights, who cares about 35, 45 or bigger latencies. But man, when you're pulling from a dive or avoiding an obstacle at the last microsend, it's not the same. For me, what is starting to drive me out of DJI, is those 'missing frames', the ones that arrives a tiny bit later from what you would expect. Anyway, thanks for the video.

Especially if you are going to carry a shark byte and you want to fly outside. Just go 3s 3inch TP3. It will pretty much fly like a five inch. My analog 3s TP3 holds up in wind great and has so much power I need to use a 70% throttle cut in order to do proximity. Much better situation if you are going to carry more weight.

I was hoping for outdoor comparison between analog and sharbyte to get more excited about it - I know you have other videos but I think that was missing in the video - so I could compare. If they make sharbyte a little better I may pull the trigger on it but right now saving for the DJI.

Not sure that these are inside quads Joshua. At least the toothpick models ... For the props, a small piece of dental floss in the hole on the prop is usually enough to keep them on and doesn't have an observable effect on balance. That said, nice job showing all three video types. I've been enjoying my toothpick's too much on analogue to change to digital so it was good to see another pathway. Nate has some excellent videos on his Mr Shutterbug channel really ripping the air in his backyard with Digital versions of the toothpicks. Highly recommended.

Simply watch more of his videos! He doesn't need to do that type of video because he has the info in separate videos. He uses the Radiomaster TX16S transmitter, and just get one of the quads in this video or maybe a good 3" quad. 5" is highly overrated and needs a lot of space which, for me anyway, means driving 25-30 minutes. with 3" and under quads, I can fly 3-5 minutes from my house at around 5 different parks... each of which is a much better spot than the 25-30 minutes away spot! Plus 3"and under are much quieter so neighbors don't even notice them and get pissed off. Never a problem with 3"and under, but 5"make a ton of noise and are very intimidating. Then watch his other videos to learn Betaflight programming, and building, and repairing, and soldering. It takes time Bro, but if you love this hobby, it's worth putting in the time to gain the knowledge. without a doubt! Good luck! 😎👍

I think there are still some multi-pathing elements in the barn which still give DJI an advantage, even if the barn is predominantly wood. In open area, I think DJI has less of a multi pathing advantage, and I would have liked to see that with these quads (though this video really isn’t a dji vs SB range comparison) FYI I think dji is going to out perform SB given identical power outputs.....I see analog outperforming SB on identical power outputs with my setups, especially regarding penetration
@JoshuaBardwell

Realistically, the range in the barn is so short -- a few tens of feet -- that multipath should not be a significant factor. Basically everything should be near-perfect video quality at that range.

This is kinda all dependent.. brand/type of VTX. How long it's been ran for, they do get tired over time. What kind of antennas are u running? All those sorts of things impact your range. I run my Rush Ultimate vtx @ 200 I think and it got more clarity and range by far over my 500mw random brand amazon vtx.. But that seems fairly close to what to the average would be. In my opinion that is.

How come I don't see anyone drill or mill their quads to literally shave weight off? @4:38 lololololololololol @5:44 I'm confused what happened? If we're getting into FPV (maybe racing) quads and want to drop a few hundred to a few grand, what stuff would you recommend for range with medium obstruction?

I don't use prop screws till after pro falls off like 2 times and gets a lil looser

0:55 fpvcycle selling parts comment is debatable given the parts are usually out of stock in my experience. Love what I've seen of their babytooth, just frustrated at not being actually able to get one

IMO it should've been similar quads. an analog 3'' 3s tp, a sharkbyte 3'' 3s tp and a dji 3'' 3s tp. these here are just completely different quads and not really too comparable
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 3 года назад
All of these were 3" toothpick. The difference in weight of the vTX forces a difference in motor size and battery which affects all up weight. You can't build a Vista toothpick at 50 grams. Obviously you can build an analog 3S toothpick at 120 grams but what's the point? Then you're just comparing the video systems not the way the video system affects the overall build.
@ValFPV
@ValFPV 3 года назад
@@JoshuaBardwell well, I see your point, but I think you are still comparing how the video system affects the outcome because when adding a digital system the weight will change pretty significantly for this small of a quad. My point is that it would also be interesting to see how much difference there is between 3, as light as possible, similar quads (same motors and frame) but with the dji digital vs analog vs shark byte system. Basically to see how much adding weight and changing the CG affects flight performance.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 3 года назад
I guess that would be interesting, but then the comments would be full of people saying, you can't run a 1202 motor on a 120g quad that's stupid why would you do that?

Hi Josh Great video on toothpick quads and the system that we fly. My issue with the ones you have chosen to me is only one is a toothpick. Yes ! only one is a toothpick. To me a toothpick is a 1s quad only. You can't build anything else and call it a toothpick, but that's just me. The BetaFPV quad is just a nice flying quads. I have not been able to see sharkbit yet but I have been told by friends that I trust to tell me the truth about it. And everyone is so happy flying it. But unfortunately for video, NO ONE ! Will beat DJI , Sharkbit is great for Micro's and Analog is the second to the last system out there. The worse will always be the WIFI, Thanks again for the video and information about the differences.

Then there's no such thing as a digital toothpick by that definition.

@@JoshuaBardwell Technically no one is stopping you from installing a 3V->6V regulator and running sharkbyte or dji(dont know how much V dji needs but should run on 2s too right?)

I think you will struggle to get the weight low enough to fly well on 1S but I could be wrong.

Your flying the blue quad better due to it being heavier and you needing more throttle while flying and so your just more comfortable flying around better with throttle being different due to weight. Notice the same thing when I fly

Why mount the battery sideways? I still don't understand what could be worth the increased drag.

i think Mr shutterbug mentioned about it in his vid that when I put battery sideway a battery wont eject when crash. Also Wild Willy call it Toilet tank mounting style. he said pitch action more sharp.

How do you get the bar with the data on the bottom on your dji goggles I didn't know you could do that

It records a subtitle track which you can overlay in a video editor.

For DJI goggles, does the latency info record to the video? I don't have DJI, but didn't think that OSD data was recorded. I'm curious how you got that data and how you put it into premiere pro, updating in real time. Was that a painstaking process?

The goggle records a subtitle track. I put the track over the video in Premiere. Premiere caption workflow isn't too difficult.
