Would you want your name in the Bible?
I came across a listing of Paul's friends in Acts 20:4,
Paul was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy, as well as Tychicus and Trophimus from the province of Asia. (NET)
I decided to look up the name Tychicus. What did he do that was so important as to be included in the list of those with Paul?
Tychicus is in the Bible 5 times. One of those times is in Acts, and the four others are in Paul's letters to Ephesians, Colossians, Timothy, and Titus.
And what we see about Tychicus is that Paul calls him, "my dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord," and "a dear brother, faithful minister, and fellow slave in the Lord" as Paul sends him to Ephesus or Colossae.
Not only does this give us a picture of Rome, of Christianity in its beginnings, of Paul's dealings with others, and discipleship apart from the original disciples, but it also gives us an insight into someone like ourselves.
Tychicus was from Asia and heard the Gospel from Paul. He believed in Jesus Christ. He didn't see Jesus, just as we didn't see Jesus. But he believed in Him, just as we believe in Him. And he was described as a faithful servant, faithful minister, and fellow slave in the Lord.
Maybe Tychicus did something amazing like bringing 5,000 people to Jesus or maybe he didn't. But what was mentioned about him was that he was faithful. A faithful minister, faithful servant. Fellow slave to the Lord. Faithful. He just kept believing in Jesus. He just kept serving with God's love.
So whether you are in the church or the marketplace, at home or at work, whether a new Christian or lifelong Christian, whether you have a crazy amazing redemption story or you've served God since you were a kid, whatever your story let it be said of you that you are faithful.
Just keep believing Jesus. Just keep serving the Lord. Just hold fast to God's Word. Just place it all in God's hands, for He is faithful no matter what.
