There is something that has become abundantly clear since having a kid: we make a lot more laundry! As a result, we need more space for our dirty clothes and towels. Nicole specifically requested something on wheels with double capacity and this is what I came up with. The woven panel design is not only beautiful, but functional as it allows the laundry to breathe. Mobility is provided by a set of four casters well-hidden by the lower rails. The top features Rockler Torsion Hinges for both safety and convenience. Inside the hamper are two cotton laundry bags held to the interior rails via snaps. These bags are easily removed or can be left in place.
In the first of this two-part series, we'll cut the domino joinery and grooves and then we'll do a proof of concept for the woven panel concept.

Glad the weaves worked out for you. They and the hamper look great. As for the "two" domino cutters....well... Now you're just showing off. I don't think the rolling hamper will ever be empty....as long as daddy and son are around.

I love the projects you do and the techniques you show. Always next level. Unfortunately I think the reason I shy away from watching your videos in my feed, for inspiration or to solve problems is that most of us don't have a full line of Festool or Powermatic tools at their disposal. The reason I think I enjoy other hobbyist channels more is because they are working with the same tools I have. I consider my shop above average but most times I cannot follow your workflow because of materials, tools or resources. I'm a master at Sketchup and know how to use all the tools you have but cant afford the higher priced/quality tools you use to master your workflow. It would be a challenge to recreate with lesser tools but i don't find much enjoyment in that. You are a master and I appreciate your channel for entertainment.

Very cool Marc - I wove an Easter basket in a very similar method for a project - it is a different feeling working with wood in that way - the flexibility seems odd until the final outcome solidifies and comes together - well done

Great design, love it. What if the groves for the weaves to go into were made with a dovetail bit so that the alternating weaves could go neatly into the grove from either direction but still fit the grove tightly. Make sense? Just a thought I had. Colin

How were the outside legs of the weaved framed secured? Did you leave it dry or use glue? Did the weaved pieces just float in the groove like a raised panel would on a cabinet door? I like the trick you used to get all the thin pieces in line. Thanks

hi, i don't have any experience of wood working. so, what i'm about to suggest may be unworkable but i'll throw the idea out there. why not taper the ends? so the pieces have more clearance (won't sit on each other) and gives them more room to expand. hey, i don't really know, so please correct me if i'm wrong. keep up the excellent tutorials.

kamchowful Nothing wrong with the idea in theory. But the strips are already 1/8" thick and tapering them will make the tips very fragile. The groove they sit in is only 1/4" so I wouldn't really want to thin out that last 1/4" of each strip. And honestly, this system works so there's no real justification for thinning them out. With different dimensions in a different situation, thinning them would probably be a good idea if it makes it easier to insert into the groove.

IBDaddyO All you really need is a tablesaw or bandsaw, a router, and a drill. A little more effort will be put into it but like most projects, it's still possible with a fairly minimal tool set.

Great looking build. Do you think it would have worked to weave the slats in the same way as you did to measure their length, but to have the side rails on while you do it? So, instead of having one side off and weaving through from the side, have the top off, and weave the slats in and then slide them down into place. Or would you worry about marring your vertical pieces as you try to slide the slats down? Hopefully that all makes sense, I'm not sure I'm explaining my thoughts correctly.

***** That could work. But I'm not sure about the downstream assembly issues that might arise. You'll see in the next part just how tricky it is to get everything together along with a bottom and back panel. Also, getting the verticals aligned into their mortises after all of those slats are in place would potentially be a problem.

Yeah, the more I thought about it, trying to adjust the verticals side to side, in order to fit the top rail on and get them into their mortises seems like it could be an extremely frustrating venture. I think you nailed it.

You mention the use of baltic birch plywood, and I have to ask. Where do you get yours? My father-in-law is setting up a cabinet shop and bought some baltic birch, but he told me he had to get it imported from russia or something like that.

Why do you glue dominoes in the rails first? I have a tendency to put mine in the legs first, is it just arbitrary or is there a reason?

To me it's more "natural" to make them part of the rails, since that's that position they'd exist in if it were a traditional mortise and tenon joint. The parts can still be stacked easily and moved around without denting anything. Put them in the legs and now you can't stack things as easily and you have something things can easily bump into.

When you unmentionables form a bulge inside you might have a problem getting them out with the bags. I'd probably go for a divider going the full length.

Looks awesome. Oh, and I like your 8/4 walnut backer board (@ 6:22). Personally, I usually use teak, ebony, or rosewood, but I could see how walnut would work in a pinch.

Jeff Wyatt Thanks Jeff. I'll have to let you know about the snaps after I live with it for a while. That was my first time incorporating snaps and if you plan to take the bags out frequently, there's probably a better option.
