Good morning, Gary. I am sure you and Phil enjoyed getting together for a visit. Friends are a wonderful part of our lives. A bonus to your visit was the gift of wood from a friend. I have found, when turning a piece of wood given from a friend, I reflect on our friendship and can pray for them all while turning their gift of wood. Makes for a very special experience. The Olive bowl has incredible beauty and will be a reminder of your visit with Phil. Nice. Not sure when it first appeared but I noticed a wood spirit carving by your headstock in this video. All the best, Ray
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Месяц назад
Thank you Ray! Your words are so very true. You are going to see something I am doing where the gift from some wood will be used to show our friendship with a couple we were in a prayer group for 12 years till they moved across the states. We still meet online once a week to continue it. I will explain more after the second turning in this story. I have basically made two turnings from one piece of Walnut. They are really close to being mirror images I will be sending one to them after the video is posted. Then i will tell the story. So I carved that wood spirit about 4 or 5 years ago. Been on the backside of the lathe but not in view. He has a rare earth magnet so it will not fall over. Might have to bring his big brother out LOL Take care my friend, Gary

That's a fantastic looking bowl. You did a great job taking the time, care and patience to keep it all wood even with the cracks - so many other turners would have plopped it in a bucket of resin to make it easier. You kept the integrity of the grain as the beauty factor, and it came out just gorgeous. Nice work!

This piece and so much more came from Dan Archer from Las Vegas before I shared some with you, Gary. Dan's a great guy and this Olive is great wood! You did a fabulous job turning and finishing this beautiful bowl. Simply impeccable! It does take lots of sharpening due to the sand that accompanies each piece from Las Vegas. But, it rewards you for all your time and effort as you know! Really nice job, buddy! Keep'em coming! 😀 Phil
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Месяц назад
Thanks Phil, I did remember it came from Las Vegas but did not recall his name. Very generous of him to bring it that far and for you to give me the pieces. This was so much fun to do(even with all the work) and the grain itself helped to find the shape. As hard as it was to cut it sanded pretty nicely despite the sand in the wood LOL. Then doing your favorite finish of two coats of sealer and 2 coats of shellac did the trick. It will be a real treasure for us and thanks again for the this piece. But the visit was even better. Gary

@@STMwoodturning I have had him on my headstock and a few other places. I put a rare earth magnet on the bottom. I carved it from a branch a few years ago. Did a lot of them at the time. They are called wood spirits. Back then a friend at the gym asked me to carve 7 for Christmas friends for his relatives. All were different and he picked them to fit who would get them. Bass wood is easier and have not used it because I like the look of the branch and leave them pretty natural. So there you go.....oh I put a rare earth magnet on the bottom so he would stay put

That's a real beauty crack and all, spiders web on the outside big eye on the inside, grand job, i say when you was taking the tenon off i spied a round piece near the lathe casing, looked like frowning eyes with a nose and mouth face, looks like its been whittled. All the best from Lincolnshire UK P S thank you Phil for passing this piece onto Gary.

Thank you Gary. It was fun watching all these features show up as I turned. Oh yeah I carved that old guy a few years ago. We had 2 grandsons with us on a camping trip and I carved one for each one of them even carved one on a branch behind our camp site for others to discover. I should do some more they are fun to do Thanks for watching, Gary

I was recently given a 20 year old log of olive wood to turn into three bowls. It’s hardness is rated at 2650, white oak is 1,050. It’s very difficult to turn ,but takes a beautiful finish. Your bowl turned out nice. Tom.

Thank you Tom. It seems a lot depends on where it grows. This came from Arizona in the desert area as I underestand. It is very hard. I was sent a piece of African Olive that turned like butter. Thanks for watching, Gary

@ThePapa1947 Месяц назад
Thank you very much Johnny. You have no idea how many times I stopped to look it over. The key to it was when I put CA in the first crack that I pointed out. This kept it from vibrating and causing the larger crack to move around. But also the wood is very strong. Thanks for watching and commenting, Gary

Lovely bowl Gary, can't beat olive for swirly bits. I turn a lot of it over here in Spain, I hate to break it to everyone but they use it as firewood 😢. Almond wood is another favourite, also used for firewood. I only have a small space to keep what I can salvage unfortunately.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Месяц назад
Thanks Colin. Well I guess if you have a lot of it then it becomes firewood. Where they have Mesquite that seems to be the same. We do not have it here but would like to. Thanks for watching, Gary

Gary, nice to have a friend like Phil! Olive wood has a truly beautiful color and grain. The shape of the bowl is pleasing and I do like the features/inclusions of the wood. With the finish…georgious👍 When grinding the NR scraper is it at 40 degrees top & bottom?
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Месяц назад
Thank you Skip. For sure Phil is great guy and had a wonderful visit back then. Happy you like the bowl. I shoot for 40 degress per side but I see I have migrated to 43 and it seems to work great. I may have change the platform at one time and did not get it bact to 40. Almost anything less than 90 will work. Thanks for watching, Gary

This must rate as one of your most beautiful rustic turnings - Truly I'm envious! The grain and the flaws in this somewhat simple turning sends it to another level. In all honesty only a very skilled person could have achieved the delightful outcome - a credit to you.

@ThePapa1947 Месяц назад
Thank you very much Anthony. I do think that sometimes a simple shape will help the beauty of the grain really stand out. This is the last of the big pieces I had and sure happy with how it turned out. I may glue the scraps of the others together and make something out of them. Thanks for watching and commenting, Gary

Lovely Gary! I’ve never turned Olive but one day! Like you, I love the patterns and contrast of the grain. It’s very beautiful and with time will even get more so as the wood ages and mellows. I know Phil likes to embrace the cracks, but sometimes you have to fill ‘em to save a piece and this was worth saving for sure. Cheers, Rick
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Месяц назад
Thanks so much Rick. I was concerned with how the crack that went all they way across the face also went down the side. A little filling helped to keep it from vibrating instead of cutting. That ended up the only place I did fill. Thanks for watching, Gary

As Igor said in Young Frankenstein "what hump?". Well for this video "what noise" from the vaccum. I understood things quite well. Gary, your next assignment, if you choose to accept it, is to make more shelves for your wife . You are quickly loading up her shelves with beautiful wood turnings. This one is exquisite, in my opinion. The figure seen in the bowl is unbelievable. Very nice!!! It is also nice to see wood turning using the flaws in the wood to enhance the natural beauty instead of filling with resin that covers things up. Good One!!!!!
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Месяц назад
Thank you John. You should see all the bowls I have in the shop that she has not seen. Might be time to get a booth at the local Saturday Market. NOT...Maybe come Christmas time I will have some gifts. Resin has its place. I used gallons of it at work to duplicate patterns if the customer wanted 4 on a board. Dang good use of it if you ask me. I think my next assignment is to drag the upright piano into the back and take it apart. This will make room for more shelves LOL. But we have been talking about getting rid of it for years. Has some nice wood in it. Gary
