You speak my mind here. I'm a guitarist primarily into rock and i tell people plainly that Abba and the Carpenters are up there with the best of them - but i get funny looks for it (these people are not being honest).
Singer singing a song about how she might feel, written by her ex-husband who left her for one of her best friends. How Agnetha was able to sing this simply defies belief.
it was a mutually agree split..........not particularly amicable but both wanted it. Their ability to write global hit after global hit after global hit.............eased the pain too I imagine.
Fleetwood Mac wrote, recorded, released their album Rumours the whole while several of its members were cheating with each other and relationships breaking up. Then went on a world tour together! It happens! LOL
Might also help that English wasn't her first language, might help to disconnect the meaning a bit. I agree with the other person who praises her professionalism as well though.
To add some context: ABBA used to consist of two married couples, the lead singer in the video (Agneta Fältskog) was married to the dude on the guitar (Björn Ulvaeus), and the brunette singer (Anni-Frid Lyngstad) was married to the bearded dude on the piano (Benny Andersson). At this point, both marriages had basically failed, and you can hear in most of ABBA's music of this last period deals with heartache and broken relationships. So the dudes wrote music about breaking up with their wives, which was sung by said wives. Must have been some Fleetwood Mac level of painful music production.
My HS FB Coach, who was a BadASS....turned me on to how awesome ABBA is. He just passed 3 yrs ago, a Friend to the end, and coached us to a State FB Chip my Sr. year....he knew what was up. India Reacts knows what's up as well....i love the heart you bring to your reactions, m'Lady. :)
@ac McG Any Swedish teenager could write lyrics in English just as easy as in Swedish. For these teenaged Mexican sisters writing lyrics in English is easier than to write them in Spanish. Some languages are simply more difficult to write lyrics in. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pq5LehocYkY.html
bingo.I grew up with ABBA in the seventies, but in those days it wasn't cool to admit that. Now,I am simply too old to care. They are the very definition of a supergroup.
No, it's fiction, written by Björn Ulvaeus. The sadness and beauty of the lyrics was "inspired" by their own divorce, of course (and according to Björn) but it's certainly no literal story or documentary.
@@herrbonk3635 that only makes it more real and personal. imagine, her ex writing lyrics about him being with another girl and then making her sing about it in public.
@@dealerovski82 Agnatha was pretty promiscuous in her day too though. We don’t know she wasn’t being with anyone first. In fact since bjorn wrote these lyrics it makes me think he experienced these feelings, not that he was trying to torture her. You can even see in this video his eyes look a bit watery...I think the initial pain of the split and perhaps both seeing each other with new partners for the first time and how that felt while adjusting to the change for both parties was his inspiration for this song. But I guess that’s here say.
@@marlenejojo1 Of course we don't know everything or the details. But the image I get from all the documentaries of Agneta its she wasn't very outgoing and didn't like the publicity. She wanted to spend more time with her child and not tour so much and that is the main conflict that ended the marriage officially.
Agnetha has always claimed that this song was her absolute favourite. Notice that the melody somehow never ends when the refrain is being sung. That's what makes this song so brilliant.
Champion George Foreman loves ABBA. He said he would train listening to ABBA and he was overwhelmed when he got to meet the males from the group in Better Late Than Never.
@@nordscan9043 You Germanic people pronounce the k when we don't i.e knight/knitting. Speaking as a half German/half Englishman. It's NOT about can't be bothered. If it's not in our language and they have not learned foreign languages HOW WOULD THEY KNOW? IDIOT! And she is American not English, they are well known for not speaking foreign languages so in their case you statement may be true.
Andreas Ranthe i, as a swede, have problem with ”thr”in english - it’s not natural and needs to be learned. You can’t expect an english person to know swedish names.. they have to learn it because it’s not natural.. hey Å,Ä and Ö don’t even exist for them
This is the most heartbreaking song ever written. Period. The amazing thing is that Abba continued for another three years before properly splitting up as a band.
The story behind this song is truly heartbreaking!! The singer Agnetha, was married to the guitarist. They had a pretty rocky marriage. She had been dealing with alot of mental issues, and had gotten to the point where she wanted out of the band, to be with their children. Her husband was more concern with the band. They ended up divorcing, he remarried, and was expecting a baby, wrote this song. And wanted to record it before his child was born!!! If you watch the music video. You will see the pain in Agnetha's eyes!!! It's real and very raw!!! This is just one of my favorite songs from Abba. And it's one that makes me teared up every time!!!
@Celtic Revival / Adfywiad Celtaidd ....... The guys in the group were pretty much all about the money and the band! Which I think effected both of the marriages. There was a documentary that I watched sometime last year. It was really good and sad. It gave me a whole new outlook on the group. I don't remember the name of it, sorry
@Celtic Revival / Adfywiad Celtaidd ...... The name of the documentary is called ... 'Abba: When All Is Said And Done' it's part real footage and reenactments! It's really good, I'm not sure if it's on youtube!
@Celtic Revival / Adfywiad Celtaidd ..... True! Look at my guy Steve Perry. With all the touring Journey did. He couldn't do it any more!! He said he was 'toast!' And after he left Journey, he didn't listen to any kind of music. However, I'm grateful for his new music!!
"And tell me... does she kiss.... like I used to kiss you?" Has to be one of the finest lines EVER written. Heartbreaking stuff. Everybody should listen to the album, Abba Gold. It should be a legal requirement!!!
YelpBullhorn ABBA Gold made me a fan (at the age of 30!) 21 years ago when I checked it out from the library, after which I purchased my own copy. Some of the most perfect pop music I have ever heard.
Both married couples that formed the group had divorced by this point in time and so song is poignantly relevant hence lead vocalist's emotional delivery🎩
Nope they hadn't got with each other's spouses. But yes both couples were recently divorced, They had stopped touring and were only producing studio albums.
Neil McDonald bang on, that’s exactly what happened. I watched a documentary with them explaining what happened. She said it absolutely tore her apart and he wasn’t much better but their marriage had played itself out but obviously they remained friends and not just for the groups sake.👍
I was born in 1971, and I remember ABBA from back then. I'm mostly into metal, have been most of my life, but I'm the only person I know that has an ABBA box set. Listen to them loud with headphones, the production is flawless and the songs are beautiful.
I listen to ABBA a lot. Love them. Can never get enough of them and their music. They are a big gold mine! In spite of their great sucess, they always kept, and still keeps, humble. And down to earth.
The last year was excruciating for Agnetha. She disappeared from the world for quite a few years. She refuses to participate in anything ABBA and as of a couple years ago came out of seclusion and recorded a new album in her native Sweden.
Also in 2020, oh my God, I love zweden, people are wonderful, but little bit cold as ice, hahahah. May i ask you a question? Do they also have feelings? I think if they have, they do not show it to the person they love. Greetings from Holland.
I'm confused by the lack of comments pointing out the impossibility of going more than a few months pretty much anywhere on the planet without hearing & seeing ABBA.
@@GroovingPict Yes, Benny and Frida's story has sung in All Is Said And Done (although we can see on Frida's face she already feels similar; her and Benny's breakup happened a little later after the single and album released)
@@dawn6320 That was the gossip; actually Björn and Agnetha became estranged from each other (mostly because of the pressure by success what made the introverted Agnetha's downer tough), then Agnetha and the kids left him and he started to date with her "younger alterego", a journalist called Lena Kallersjö (around a week later). A half year later Björn confessed to Frida a quite alike state: he cheated her with a (bit younger and similar looking) TV reporter, Mona Nörklit. The women tried to move on too with more or less success. This and the global political and social issues had a strong effect on the final completed album, The Visitors and the subsequent singles which would lead up the next album what has never been made.
Wow, a spectacular vocal performance! One of those songs that will expose even the slightests of vocal flaw, she had to be spot on every second throughout
Pure vocals, neutral - no oversinging, no vocal gymnastics, no ghetto r&b vocals. The material - true songs and compositions, artistic merit, musical content, variations in the songs, a message, melody and even sensitivity. No, ABBA isn't the only one like this, but simply most mainstream acts and work before the 2000s
she's not a musician. she's a singer. there's a BIG difference. a voice is not a musical instrument. never was, never will be look up "instrument" in the dictionary.
@Ricky Crawford you couldn't be more wrong bub. look it up. from cambridge dictionary: someone who is skilled in playing music, usually as a job. from websters: A musician is a person who plays a musical instrument or is musically talented. from wiki: A musician is a person who plays a musical instrument or is musically talented. I'll summarize it for you, NEVER will you see a vocalist on ANY musician list. you keyboard commando's should THINK before you speak. here endeth the lesson. duh
Aaand.. while we're at it: if anyone wants to know another acronym of a huge swedish name , IKEA, it's; Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd. The founder's name and birthplace! 😁
agnetha had an incredible vocal range. if you listen to "hole in your soul", you'll hear her hit a glass-shattering high note in the middle of the song. it makes my hair stand up whenever i hear it.
@@elizabethtimothy4776 Makes me think of Hollywood marriages and divorses... or break ups... Like If both are alive and whole at the end, it's a win...Lol
I dont believe they were actually "influential". By all accounts they brought nothing new to music. They just perfected the form. Someone like the sex pistols (absolutely massively influential... yet not a single award) or kraftwerk... possibly one (if not the) most influential group in history creating two brand new styles of music along with the Beatles or Elvis. If music "styles" were vehicles (cars, trains, planes etc) then ABBA would be a Ferrari, a bullet train or a supersonic fighter jet. But it's the Benz motorwagan, Trevithics steam engine or Wright brothers "flyer" that were the creators.
Abba have been a part of my life since 1974. My parents took me to their concert when they toured in Australia in 1977. I was 7 years old. They have just recently recorded 3 songs together in the studio (after about 28 years!) for a virtual tour which I have been anxiously waiting to be released. But there has been some delay. Abba is the love of my life, they have always been there for me. ❤️
There are so many other ABBA songs you should react to! _Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!_ _Money, money, money_ _Chiquitita_ _Fernando_ _S.O.S_ _Waterloo_ _Super Trooper_ _Dancing Queen_ _Mamma Mia_ _Voulez-Vous_ And, as for some personal favourites that are less-well-known but I think are awesome _Eagle_ _I Have A Dream_ There are probably a dozen (or two) amazing songs I am forgetting right now, but these should last you for a bit.
It's about another woman winning the heart of her man. It's a breakup not necessarily a divorce with kids. You opened up a great box with ABBA. Weirdly I don't see other reactors doing ABBA.
Thank you for finally doing an ABBA reaction! Very well done and you may be surprised to know they sold over 300 million albums world-wide. They also are the only band to ever sellout six consecutive nights at Wembley Stadium for a tour in the UK. If you ever want to see something incredible look up their live videos from that tour. You'll be blown away at how good they were live.
She was one of my fav from abba and still is. This song was my first song I ever wrote letter by letter (and English isn't my first language) I was so proud of myslef. I learned English form English music and one of them was abba songs.
This is undoubtedly the saddest divorce song ever written in the history of music. When a marriage or relationship ends, there is always someone who loses more than the other.
I am Swedish and ABBA were my absolute idols when I was young. My walls were covered with posters of them and I even went to see them live at a consert. One of my best memories.
It was quite obvious that you were overwhelmed with her voice and her looks 😁 no kidding, I can highly relate. Such a great singer and absolutely beautiful.
So funny to see a young 'un react tot the music of my youth. It's inconceivable to me that you don't even /know/ of these bands today, but that's how it is. ABBA is an acronym made up from the initials of their first names.
It depends on people. Young generation also loves and listens to them. I'm 16 and I love old songs by Beatles, Queen, ABBA, Guns 'N Roses, Whitney Houston. They became world classics. It is worth at least respecting. Sorry for English mistakes, I'm not a native speaker
This was my favorite group..when I was 12 years old. They were recently offered 1 Billion to sing again, however they declined. Their Songs in Spanish are so beautiful and I believe they are Simply Amazing! Watch the documentary as the girls in the band were married to the men and decided to DIVORCE...they were millionaires by then and split up. Thanks 🙏🏽 for the REACTION is greatly appreciated...Happy Holidays and God Bless. 🤔🙇🏻♀️🙏🏽🔥🔍🇺🇸🕊👏🏽
OLD DUDE HERE. WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER ABBA WAS THE BIGGEST, MOST POPULAR GROUP IN THE WORLD. I HAD FRIENDS WHO FOUGHT OVER AN ABBA POSTER. EVERYONE LOVED ABBA!
When you listen to these two ladies beautiful voices, just keep in mind that there was no auto tune back them. You really need to dive into this group. They have so many hits. Probably a lot of songs you know and don't even realize it. Dancing Queen, Mama Mia, Fernando.. Prepare for the 🐇 🕳️
@Nicky L When they exploded into the English-speaking world, Agnetha could not speak the language. The others had various ability, but English was not the primary language for any of them. Agnetha memorized and sang the sounds, not the words.
@Nicky L pretty sure both the ladies couldn't speak English...definitely not Agnetha in fact I think Bjorn may have been the only one of the 4 that could speak and understand English properly
This song and Love is a Losing Game by Amy Winehouse are songs that I think of together, for all that they’re very different. They both use very similar metaphors for a broken relationship, and have the same amount of emotion in them. Also sung by two extremely gifted women with astounding voices.
It's the most bitter of love songs and yes Agnetha brings such incredible raw emotion to her performance. The perfect Reprise to this ABBA song is 'Thank You for the Music'
Welcome to my youth when ABBA was on the radio all the time. While I'm more a hard rock, metal guy...I still love me some ABBA. Great songs and great performance. Just get one of their greatest hits albums, pour your favorite adult beverage, kick everyone out of the house, put some great earphones on and enjoy!
