38 Special was a southern rock band that featured front man Donnie Van Zant. And, yes, he was Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyd's little brother. Years after Ronnie's death from the plane crash, Lynyrd Skynyrd reformed in 1987 with a third brother, Johnnie Van Zant, taking over lead vocals and primary songwriting responsibilities. So much southern rock history tied into these siblings.

They had a lot of great hits in the early 80's-90's such as "Hold On Loosely", "Caught Up In You", You Keep Runnin' Away", "If I'd Been The One", "Back Where You Belong", "Teacher, Teacher", "Like No Other Night", "Second Chance", "The Sound Of Your Voice" etc.

If you need a genre, 38 Special falls into Southern Rock. Following on the heels of Skynyrd's success, labels looked at bands like 38 Special, Molly Hatchett and Blackfoot. Does have that roll down the windows, hit the road feel.
@Texashog11
@Texashog11 2 года назад
Considering that Donnie Van Zant, brother of Ronnie Van Zant of Skynyrd, was the leader of .38 Special, leads to understanding their southern rock sound. Plus Billy Powell who was the pianist for Skynyrd was in .38 Special also. Donnie went on to form the band Van Zant with his brother Johnnie which had most of their success in the 2000’s playing country.

38 Special is an American Southern Rock band that has been together since 1974. There has been a lot of personnel changes in the band, but the two members that have been there the longest, are lead singer Don Barnes (who, with the exception of a 5 year period in the late-1980s/early-1990s, has been a mainstay of the group) and Donnie Van Zant, who is the brother of the late Lynyrd Skynyrd founder, Ronnie Van Zant (who was in the group from 1974 to 2013, when he was forced to retire from the music industry due to inner-ear nerve damage). Some other 38 Special hit songs/music videos are "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys" and "Caught Up In You".

In fact, a few friends and I formed a band to play in our Senior Variety Show right before graduation and we wanted to play this song (I was the drummer), but our singer backed out last minute and his replacement couldn’t hit the higher notes, so we switched gears and went with You Really Got Me (Van Halen version) instead. Burned a lot of gas listening to this back in the day! For years I thought the lead singer was from Kansas. (Before google) lol. Their music always sounds ‘full’ and balanced!

38 Special is (almost) the epitome of "Southern Arena Rock". Got to see them in concert about 10 years or so ago... although the only original member was Don Barnes (lead singer, so it all sounded just fine). This song... well, it just hits me the right way... don't know how else to put it. Hold on to the man/'woman you love, but not so tight that you smother them... just "don't let go". Not bad advice in any generation. Let that special someone know that you want them with you, but don't keep them all to yourself... well, don't let them sleep around, but don't lock them in the basement while you're at work or anything 😁

"caught up in you", "if i'd been the one" and this are all great .38 special songs. they had that wonderful blend of southern rock with a catchy, hook-ladden melody. fun fact: the woman featured in "if i'd been the one" official vid is bruce springsteen's 1st wife. music was a small world lol.

Donnie Van Zant rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He is best known for being a member of the band 38 Special, from its formation in 1974 until 2013. He is the middle of three sons; his older brother Ronnie was the original lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd who died in a 1977 plane crash in Mississippi, and his younger brother Johnny has been the lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd since 1987.

38 Special released this song when I was 21 (1980). When my son (born in '82) got married (2015), I told him that he could do worse than to take the advice this song gives. Be together, love each other, but don't smother or try to control each other. Give each other space to breathe and grow. Your love grows best where you let the other be the one you were attracted to in the first place and let them grow into more that you can love.... "Hold on loosely, but don't let go!' Yeah... I get a lot out of this song! :)LOL(:

When you say "Warm", "comfortable", "backyard" and "down to earth"... you are correct. What you need to know, and the reason you get that feeling, is that .38 Special was a huge part of the southern-rock/swamp-rock contingent out of the Florida/Georgia area in the late 70's... early 80's. You might be talking about the same feeling you get when you hear bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, Allman Brothers. It's a Southern thang!

This is what we called southern rock at the time. Here's another southern rock suggestion. Have you ever heard a song start off with a flute solo? Well, you would hear that in "Can't You See" by the Marshall Tucker Band. I think you would also like the vocals, and guitar in this song.

I love 38 Special they're from Jacksonville Florida and are among the luminaries of southern rock from Jacksonville with the others being Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, plus a whole host of other bands like Limp Bizkit ,yellowcake and Shinedown , I think there might be something in the water in Jacksonville

Hold On Loosely was the first single from .38 Special's fourth studio album, Wild-Eyed Southern Boys, with the song released in February 1981. The band was formed during 1974 in Jacksonville, FL by Don Barnes (who sang lead on this song) and Donnie Van Zant (brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd vocalist Ronnie Van Zant).

Love 38 Special! Great early 80s band. The guitarist is Donnie Van Zant, the younger brother of Ronnie Van Zant from Lynyrd Skynyrd. My favorite of theirs is "If I'd Been the One", but I also loved "Teacher, Teacher" (hmmm), "Caught Up in You", "Second Chance", and "Rockin' Into the Night". P.S. Went to school with Jackie Grondin drummer , my pops used to bust our chops saying “so when are you guys posing for Holy pictures “ Jackie went down to Jones college in Fla. circa 1970 where he started playing in this band ,and I went to trade school in Nj. In 74 . A few years went by and Jackie stopped over my parents house ,and my pops true to form asked him how candle making and leather craft classes were when much to my pops surprise Jackie handed him 38 Specials first album 38 Special circa 1977 .oh how I miss those days .At 66 years old I’m still practicing guitar . ha thanks for the memory

"Caught up in you" was one of my favorite songs from when my wife and i met and i fell in love. She later told me she preferred "Hold on Loosely", and that it was advice i should take. Took us 12 years to get married, so i guess i passed, but "You keep on Running" away and "What if I'd been the one" to say goodbye and others made appearances on the soundtrack of our relationship.
