I would guess they know that, but they mentioned Liza as a Broadway singer they've seen, then said they want to checkout more Judy Garland without mentioning that Judy is Liza's mom. So maybe it's possible they don't know they're mother and daughter.

best movie musical, I'll grant you. For the stage, my heart belongs to Guys and Dolls. Lackluster movie adaptation, but amazing on stage in every production I've seen. But yes, in movie musicals, Singin' in the Rain cannot be beat

For me, the best example is Gypsy: as the quintessential 'stage' musical, none of the movies adaptations have ever done it justice; for me, it's the ultimate theatrical musical experience.

Guys, this is not Broadway. In fact, Judy Garland never appeared in a Broadway musical. As others have said, Judy's performance here of "Get Happy" is from the film "Summer Stock." And yes, you do need to watch Judy's duet with Barbra Streisand from Garland's TV show in the early '60s. It's legendary.

Well, she may not have been in a Broadway musical but she was in vaudeville with her family before she went into film so she still performed on stage and even more so after when she was doing live shows, including at Carnegie Hall, after getting blacklisted by studios. I definitely agree on the duet she did with Barbra, as well as the medley they did later in the episode. Two incredible powerhouses that's for sure.

Though Judy was never in a Broadway musical as such, her concert performances at the Palace Theatre in 1951 through early 1952 earned her a special Tony Award for her contribution to "reviving vaudeville." And although technically "Get Happy" isn't Broadway, since it was written for the original film musical SUMMER STOCK, it's a Broadway-style number, performed as if on a stage with an obviously fake painted backdrop, and within the story of the movie it is actually part of a show that is being rehearsed with the ultimate goal of opening on Broadway.

@@oliverbrownlow5615 I just love when Gene Kelly talked about it. He was, at that time, on a high because he had done "Singin' In The Rain". He said that Judy asked him if he would star with her in Summer Stock because it was her last film with MGM. He agreed because he appreciated that for his first film, "For Me And My Gal" (my favorite from their 3 films), they wanted to pair him up with someone who established and popular, which was Judy. He said he was so nervous working with her but she was so helpful and encouraging with him. He didn't even think twice about it. Just rearranged some things and did it. Something I always noticed whenever Gene Kelly and Judy Garland danced with each other, most of Gene Kelly's partners would look at the floor and feet when they danced but Gene Kelly (for the most part) looked straight ahead at the camera. Even Fred Astaire would often look down. Judy though, more often than not, she was looking straight ahead too. I don't why it was something I just noticed about as a kid, I just did. Still notice it too and it just makes me smile seeing how in sync they were with each other and the affection they really had for each other.

@@JustTanya. Gene Kelly was also supposed to co-star with Judy in EASTER PARADE (1948), but had to bow out due to an injury. It was Kelly's suggestion that he be replaced by Fred Astaire.

This was from Judy's 1950 performance in "Summer Stock." It was the last film she would make for MGM, She stared opposite Gene Kelly, and was a bit heavier than usual at the beginning of filming due to the studio having suspended her and throwing her into a depression. Struggling with the dance numbers, she was under pressure to lose weight quickly, and unfortunately started using pills to accomplish the task. Mid way through shooting, her brief sobriety would be over. What MGM Studios put this woman through is criminal. Her talent was, and still is, unmatched.

How stars (especially women) were and still are chewed up and spit out for our "entertainment" is horrific. No matter the genre (check out Maria Callas' similar struggles in the opera world) so much talent has been ended well before it should have been. It almost hurts to watch clips like this because it belies what was going on behind the scenes.

@@BruinPhD2009 I haven’t read Maria C’s full story but I did read that she purposefully swallowed a tape worm - only known about by her and her personal assistant - to help her lose and control her weight. I don’t know how long she kept it but it was extremely long by the time she sought medical help to expel it. Imagine!!

Amber mentioned how Judy could command a stage, and Liza tells an anecdote about when she and her mama, Judy, were doing a series of shows together at The Palladium in London. Liza was just a teenager, coming into her own, and had a medley of songs that she sang during the show. Brought the house down, and she said she could see her mother offstage, cheering her on, but at a certain point, she looked over and her mother was primping and fixing her makeup, and then, in Liza’s words “Next thing I know, my mama is gone and it’s JUDY GARLAND walking out on the stage, and just the force of her blew me away!”

This is half true: it absolutely IS one of her VERY BEST performances, but she was far from sober. She'd had some brief success with sobriety in early 1949, but by the time Summer Stock (the movie this is from) was being filmed, she'd begun to take pills again to lose the weight she'd gained while sober. This particular video was only filmed after the rest of principal photography had ended, because the studio realised they still had no big Judy number. By the time it was filmed, she'd lost considerable weight through pills. So she really wasn't well when this was filmed. STILL: it didn't stop her from performing the entire number perfectly in two takes (musical numbers normally go into the hundreds).

Judy was born to be on stage, literally - born into a performing family. For most of her adult life she appeared in movie musicals (it was the golden era for musicals on screen) but her concerts were legendary - her 1961 Carnegie Hall performance is still considered one of the greatest live shows of all time

Filming of musical numbers can go into dozens of takes; Judy nailed this in just TWO. Despite what others say, she wasn't well during shooting: while she'd lost weight, she'd done so by taking pills to slim down again following a brief period of sobriety in 1949. By the standard of 1949-50 when this was filmed, she looked physically 'well' (i.e. slim) during these scenes, but she was still very unwell mentally. Which makes her performance all the more remarkable. It will have taken great effort, yet appears to be a phenomenally effortless display. She was an icon of professionalism, but this regimented dedication (drummed into her since childhood) was also her lifelong nemesis. RIP.

That might just be my favorite performance of Judy's. She balances portraying joy at singing with the band with putting across the heartache of the song. Plus her voice was in peak shape with a more mature style than some of her famous younger performances.

Fun fact: Although Canada does not have a First Lady, it was rumoured that Barbra Streisand would become Canada's equivalent of a First Lady as she was in a two-year romance in 1969-1970 with then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Although the romance ended, they remained good friends up to his passing in 2000.

Barbra Streisand also appeared in a previous Broadway musical, I CAN GET IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE (1962). In the same year she was featured on the 25th Anniversary recording of a historically important revue, PINS AND NEEDLES. She starred in the film version of her Broadway hit FUNNY GIRL (1968), and followed up by starring in film versions of two more Broadway musicals, HELLO, DOLLY (1969) and ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER (1970). Five years later she starred in a film sequel to FUNNY GIRL called FUNNY LADY (1975), featuring both period songs and original Broadway-style songs. Her original film musical YENTL (1983) features songs which function (Broadway-style) as her character's internal monologues, but no other character in the movie sings, not even her co-star, Tony Award winning Broadway singer Mandy Patinkin. Most of Barbra's early albums feature numerous Broadway show tunes, though for a time in the late 70s and early 80s, she began to concentrate on pop songs instead. In 1985, however, she returned to her roots with THE BROADWAY ALBUM, and later recorded a sequel, BACK TO BROADWAY (1993).

Her movie A Star is Born (the first remake of the original 30’s movie) was spectacular. It was a tour de force for her. I never saw a star do it all in one film, and do it spectacularly. Her rendition of a nobody making the big time mentored by a fading star is the BEST one of all the A Star is Born films. She can blow you away with her singing and move you to tears with her drama. It’s just unforgettable. She was nominated for an Oscar and should have won. She lost to Grace Kelly for basically appearing in The Country Girl without makeup in the first half. I like Grace Kelly but she can’t hold a candle to Judy Garland.

Yes, Barbra looked and sounded incredible in that film, but she was WAY too young for the role. Like, decades too young. Dolly Levi was supposed to be in her late 40s or early 50s and Barbra Streisand was in her mid 20s when she made that movie.

Judy Garland was far More than The Wizard of Oz. She was a multiple threat in the entertainment business. She could sing, she could dance, and she could act. My parents have both told me that not many people too young to remember actually know how big Judy Garland was. She was a mega-star. She was HUGE.

This isn't a suggestion for a reaction vid, but something to check out on your own. One of my favourite Judy Garland movies is "A Child Is Waiting" from 1963. She plays a music teacher working at a home for developmentally challenged children. It was groundbreaking for it's time and very, very moving. Highly recommend it.

"The Man That Got Away" from "A Star Is Born" is another song that Judy Garland flat out OWNS! So many stage musicals moved to film, where they had benefits like being able to retake scenes, larger stages, enormous casts, great sound systems, and creative camera angles. But there's nothing like being in a theater watching a live performance. I'd like to see a musical on your movie channel, and "Kiss Me Kate" is a great one. The way Judy could capture and hold a audience , her Judyisms, The way she would make her fans even now to watch a Judy performance you are drawn in as if she is a friend, that has invited you over and she makes the soul comfortable. I am a fan of Whitney, but she never made me feel like I was at home when I watched her. While also they are both sad sad stories , Judy's story makes you feel like she was just like you and I. All Judy wanted from the beginning was to be loved. She wanted to be loved by MGM, She wanted to be loved by her audience, She wanted to be loved by the men who took advantage of her, She wanted to be loved by her kids, and that need for love, and perfection is what killed her. She wanted to be exactly what everyone needed, so she took the uppers, she took the downers, she drained everything she had, until finally she had no more. So many only see Judy as Dorothy, but Judy was so much more then the girl with the ruby shoes. Her movie Harvey Girls , and Meet Me in St.Louis are amazing works of art. So no Judy is in my thoughts on a higher pedestal then Miss Whitney, but Whitney was great.

There are so many great Judy Garland movies starting when she was a child. They say she was a true professional. In a complicated song in The Harvey Girls involving a large cast, singing, dancing, complex choreography and a train she did a single walk through and then nailed it on the first take.

My mother was a huge fan (as am I). When my mother died, we had played Judy's 'Over The Rainbow' - but not the movie version, sung by Dorothy as a young teenager; we preferred the adult version, with all its pathos, experience and cynicism.

I love Judy Garland❣️ Barbra Streisand got her start on the Broadway stage playing the role of legendary comedian, Fanny Brice, in the musical Funny Girl. It was later made into a movie also starring Barbra Streisand in the lead role. Barbra won the Academy Award for best actress for her portrayal of Brice in this movie.

So good! Now do Judy's "The man that got Away" from her film version of "A Star is Born". This is later in her life and she really cuts loose with the full power and emotional expression of her voice "The Trolly Song " from her film "Meet Me in St Louis" is a great post Wizard song. "Good Mornin'" from "Babes in Arms" and "It Never Rains but it Pours" from "Love Finds Andy Hardy" are pre Wizard and showcase her early maturing voice,youthfull charm and great chemistry with Micky Rooney.

Judy Garland had many movie hits with incredible songs, such as "Meet Me in St. Louis," "The Harvey Girls," "The Easter Parade," and "The Star Is Born." She had a very mature voice at a young age, and she started with her three other sisters known as "The Gumm Sisters." Her real name was Francis Ethel Gumm. Her father ran a vaudeville theater, and she started to sing there at age four. She did not have a good relationship with her mother, and Judy was used by her mother to make a lot of money. When MGM Studios hired Judy to be in "The Wizard of Oz," the studio heads gave her amphetamines to lose weight because they thought she was too fat. Since she could not sleep with those pills, they gave her barbiturates to help her sleep. As a result, they made her an addict, but they blamed her when her addiction was affecting her work at the studio. Besides the pills, they gave her cigarettes to help her lose weight, too. One of the gingham dresses she wore for "The Wizard of Oz" had a secret pocket, so she could hide her cigarettes. While she was making that movie, her father was dying, and she was not allowed to visit him or go to his funeral after he died. Judy loved her father very much, and that was her biggest regret. Even the president of MGM Studios back then, Louis B. Mayer, made many rude comments about Judy, especially her looks. He called Judy his "little hunchback." He was a despicable man, and he did not care how he treated his actors and actresses since they were under contract. I read a book about the making of "The Wizard of Oz," and Judy became best friends with Margaret Hamilton, who played the Wicked Witch of the West. Margaret was a school teacher besides being an actress, and she knew how to treat children with kindness and understanding. I am glad they had a good relationship because Judy needed a friend like Margaret as a mentor and confidant. The rest of the cast loved Judy very much, especially Bert Lahr and Ray Bolger. There is a video of Judy dancing with Bert after many decades filming their movie. There is also a great miniseries about Judy called "Me and My Shadows." Judy was an amazing talent, and she is still missed among her adoring fans. RIP Judy Garland.

So glad you all got to Judy. You’ll see she has a rather large fan base for a lady that passed away in 1969 at the age of 47. But if you take the time to listen to some more of her music and watch som live performances you’ll just become a fan. She had a way with an audience. The album recorded live at her 1961 performance at Carnegie Hall in 1961 won the Grammy for Album of the year. I could suggest a ton of songs but The Man That Got Away would be great. She had a TV show for one season 1963-64 on CBS there were some magnificent performances on those shows. One she duets with Barbra Streisand (Very Very young Streisand) another she duets with her daughter Liza (classics) but the best performance and one of the all time live performances of any song was when she sang “Old Man River” on The Judy Garland Show. It’s on you tube. She’s older and frankly looked even older than her age but she puts everything she had into this emotionally powerful performance I think you’d both be moved and impressed.

Glad to see you are doing more 30's, 40's and 50's singers who were so great. This performance by Judy Garland was from a movie titled "Summer Stock (1950) with Gene Kelly. These three decades had some of the finest music and singers. With the Big Band era of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Harry James. Which the late great singer/actor Judy Garland was a part of. You cannot go wrong going down this Rabbitt Hole that is the 30's, 40's & 50's. Please take a listen to one of Judy Garlands best friends who came up together with her as a child actress. Her name is Deanna Durbin. She was a great operatic soprano who can hit notes most can't. She starred in many movies of the 40's.

This is actually from the movie "Summer Stock" which (I think) also starred Gene Kelly. And as for Ms. Streisand, her Broadway show "Funny Girl" got made into a movie and she got the Best Actress Oscar for that part.

This scene from the movie Summer Stock was actually filmed a few months after the rest of the movie was shot. She had lost weight in that few months. In the movie she plays a farmer, always in overalls and baggy clothes to conceal her weight. When this scene was shot she was thinner and ready to wear this skimpy outfit.

This isn't Broadway but movie musicals at some of their best. This is from the move Summer Stock from 1950 also starring the great Gene Kelly. I'm still waiting for you to start reacting to movie musicals. Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Danny Kaye, Bing Crosby, Vera Allen, Frank Sinatra and soooooo many greats! NOW you need to watch her duet with Barbra Streisand - "Happy Days Are Here Again"/"Get Happy" from Judy's tv show. Check out Barbra's turn as Dolly Levi from the movie version of the Broadway musical Hello, Dolly! - Just Leave Everything To Me (video from the movie is available), Before the Parade Passes By, So Long Dearie, the ensemble performance of Put On Your Sunday Clothes. It would be great if you can actually find a video of the actual dance number from the movie. From the movie based on the book, Funny Girl, Don't Rain on My Parade (from the actual movie) and People. Barbra has two albums where she sings duets with other singers and actors who sing. The Encore album is with other actor/singers and they are all Broadway songs.

Barbra Streisand at age 19 was in a show called ' I can get it for you wholesale'. She played an unloved secretary named Miss Marmelstein and sang a song of that name. You should give it a listen. It is so worth it!
