MADNESS!! One of the pioneers of ska pop! I always loved the group's goofy style, which is present in pretty much every video they did. The lead singer, Graham "Suggs" McPherson, added so much joy and fun to the band, which continues to this day. Other great Madness songs include "One Step Beyond", "House of Fun", and "It Must Be Love". The band was formed in Camden, North London, England.
"the group's goofy style, which is present in pretty much every video they did" which is why I yelled at my TV screen when they said "we were told to watch the lyric video"
The "Nuttiest" Sound around...the Monster Monster sound of Madness...ONE STEP BEYOND!!!!...they were part of the Ska Revival in the UK in the early 80s...
You can't listen to a Madness song without the video's. Madness songs are complimented immensely by their unbelievably good video's one of the pioneers of music video's with amazing fun and good scripting. You miss half the joy without their video's
Yes, they really should have had the video for Our House too. Seeing the lyrics onscreen is good (to understand what they're going on about), but the vidoe is great for this song.
They needed the lyrics written to make any sense of what was being sung about, but you're right you've got to watch the videos that go with Madness's hits otherwise you're missing something.
Madness are a national treasure in the UK, they are so British that I can understand why their music may not travel that well. Suggs sings in his own London accent, and that's the great appeal, it's real, with no pandering to a 'mid-Atlantic' accent you hear with so many other UK artists. Other than the obvious influence of Ska music, the other main influence is Ray Davies of The Kinks, who trail blazed in the 1960's with his lyrics of London working class life and it's colourful characters. Both Ray Davies and Suggs are no nonsense balladeers, telling stories of everyday life in a direct, often humorous and creative way. The songs are strongly rhythmical, clipped and tight, designed to get you on your feet, no room for egos and flowing solo's, the whole band is about the beat.
@@bcafed trust me, they were and remain exciting fir we Brits too. Suggs is a national treasure, and the Our House video one of the best ever made, and always brings a smile to my face.
It's hilarious that someone that used to only listen to rap, is complaining that lyrics are not being "sung"! Yay, Jordan, you've come a long way, I love to see how you appreciate killer vocals now!
Like others, I was thinking the same thing. I must say, however, that I like the verses and other interludes better than the chorus. I think those parts are “sung” just fine - not spoken at all.
*Madness.* One of the best bands in the world. Still around, still touring,...after 45 years (with a little break). And with a discography that is definitely worth to be discovered by new fans.
I like how Jay was honest that he didn't care for it too much. I grew up with the song and like it but I appreciate his honesty. You can't love every song. But I also like how Amber liked different elements in it. Love your reactions!
Rap fan doesn't like song because there is not enough singing in it. This gave me a chuckle. Now you know how most of us feel about rap. This song has a really impressive musical arrangement. The verses are not being spoken; they are being sung, and the melody is not that easy to sing considering how many words and notes there are. I think because the lead singer is so chill, it sounds simpler than it is. This was the feel-good song of the 80s. When it came on the radio or MTV, everyone would stop what they were doing and start singing along. It is still one of the most iconic songs of all time.
These fellas are my husbands favourite group of all time. They came out in the late 70s. And were massive. They still tour, and perform. They are a UK band from London. They have a Cockney accent. MADNESS FOREVER 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
One of my favorites too. The accent btw (esp lea singer Suggs) I think is not technically cockney since they're not exactly from that area of london but yeah, pretty strong in any case.
Your Husband has great taste ! I saw Madness live just 5 days ago and they Have still got it . The guys are in their late. 50ws and early 60s now and have been going for over 40 years . They are from North London and the concert I was at had another British Group called squeeze ( from South London ) open for them . Both groups were fantastic .!
I feel they will only really 'get' the craziness if they watch the original video with the skinhead waking up, and then the Finsbury Park one where they caused an earthquake. To still pull the crowds and have such a mixture of people enjoying the music after so many years, might help impress upon them that in the case of Madness it's about more than the lyrics or music individually
One Step Beyond is actually an intro to an unfinished song that the band ran out of studio time to finish, so the engineer just looped what they did have and a stone cold classic was born 😃
Just in a way that Madness are a 2nd wave ska band and No Doubt belong to the 3rd wave. Other 2nd wave ska band like The Specials, The Selecter or The Beat were also an influence not only to No Doubt but also to other 3rd wave bands like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Sublime or Save Ferris.
Need to actually watch the live video from 1992 Finsbury Park, where the crowd dancing along to the track One Step Beyond actually caused an earthquake, as was widely reported
Yes!.....Finally reacting to some Ska music. Madness performed this song on the roof of Buckingham Palace for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and at the London Olympics closing ceremony in 2012.
I saw Madness open up for the Go-Go’s and David Bowie in Anaheim 1986.. that was one fantastic show!!!! This was my families anthem… there was 7 of us kids and at any given moment there would be 6-8 friends hanging out too.. we were known for being the LOUDEST house in the neighborhood.
Irony overload!!! I saw The GoGo's open for Madness, at The Wirrina, in Peterborough, England, in '81!!! 😲 I suppose they had 'home' advantage over the girls!
Madness are British, from London. They came out of the late '70s/early '80s Ska/Two-Tone scene (hence the strong horn section) but became more mainstream as they gained success. They specialised in funny, tongue-in-cheek songs (not all of them though), and their videos are hilarious, with all sorts of clowning around. 'Our House' is honestly a decent song, but if you live in the UK you can get sick-to-death of hearing it on the radio too often.
Well, I say give Amber all the "Madness" she wants. Her depth of understanding music encompasses greater appreciation of various aspects of music. Sorry, but Amber is the heart and soul of this channel.
@@topoisomerace - The problem isn't that he doesn't like certain songs. The problem is that he's clueless about music and is uncomfortable with anything even slightly out of his comfort zone. I'm sure he's a nice guy but appears lacking in empathy or musical understanding, can't seem to connect to anything much that he's not familiar with and takes every meaning literally. Having said all that, I don't think the channel would be the same without him. He provides an obvious contrast with Amber's enthusiasm, musical understanding and empathy. Without him, the channel wouldn't be as notable. :)
@@drwalker6517 Agreed! Sick of seeing 'wholesome' bandied about for everything from cute memes to someone holding a door open for someone to buying flowers for their other half. Stupid misuse of a word.
Clearly it isn't always about the singing, although that part is covered quite well here. The music, composition and instrumentation are the point of a song like this. It's beautiful.
Please do again with the original video. It brings the magic of the song. You can still understand the lyrics. Definitely a Classic MTV video from my old days LOL. Thank You Both for such an awesome RU-vid Channel!!
You have to watch the video, it's so great. It's sort of hilarious that you guys decided to do a lyric video for a song with such an iconic and brilliant video.
Madness truly are an English iconic band. Performing this song in particular for the queen on the roof of Buckingham palace says how much the country adore them
Madness are an English band. Those are London accents you can hear. Some of their other hits include 'One step beyond', 'Baggy trousers', 'Night boat to Cairo, 'It must be love', 'House of fun', and 'My girl'.
Madness played this song live at Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee with the backdrop of Buckingham Palace - really cool graphics were projected on the Palace behind the band. They ended the song with a bit of improvisation "One's house in the middle of the street" - "One's" is a reference to the Queen, whose house they were playing in front of.
You really should have reacted to the official video (With Lyrics)… Their music is great but most of their Madness and fun loving stuff comes from watching them perform and play together, I would always go with the official video’s if you react to more Madness, you can always catch up with the lyrics later….xxx Now watch the video and have yourselves some fun, even if it’s not recorded for youtube….xxx
This is another band you have to see in action live. Early performances, the whole band and crowd are dancing from start to finish, it's unreal! Suggs had the moves!
I'm with Amber I have always enjoyed this song - I was a kid when it came out. Madness are British - You two are delightfully bad at identifying British accents - that's very American and adorable of you both.... They are English - North London I believe. House of Fun (similar vibe) or It Must Be Love would be the next songs to check out. PS - Amber is looking outrageously cute today.
I can usually narrow an accent down to the country of origin, although I do believe I could identify a Liverpool accent over a few others....maybe....LOL. I grew up on a Navy base and was exposed to accents from all over the world at a very early age. Got a special place in my heart for the UK though, having a LOT of English and Irish blood in my family tree (also seems to be an American trait, tracing families... although I'll gladly admit to being wrong on that point)
I've been waiting for you to do this one. This is such a fun song, and so very much the 80's. Misadvised The video for this was a must see. Jordan if you saw the video you would enjoy it much more.
Another Madness song to react to is 'One Step Beyond'. It really is performance art so you need to see them perform it and not just a lyric video. You are in for a treat!! It could be a fun one to watch with your kids too!
This song has such a warm, nostalgic place in my heart. I had just graduated high school the year before and life seemed boundless. The music is great as well as the sentiment.
Agreed. Shamefully, I've not listened to it for years then something reminded me of it the other day and it's been on repeat in the car for the last two days😊
I know lyric videos are sometimes needed for certain songs…but this is a song that the official video NEEDS to be seen. It is classic & hilarious. Seriously, once you see the video, you it will be in your head each & every time you hear this song👍🏼😎
For Female Friday: Ronnie Spector - ‘Be My Baby’ Bette Midler - ‘From a Distance’ Toni Braxton - ‘Un-Break My Heart’ Roberta Flack - ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ Other notables: Christopher Cross - ‘Sailing,’ Kayne Brown - ‘Worship You,’ Kool and The Gang - ‘Celebration,’ Dan Fogelberg - ‘Same Old Lang Syne’ Luther Vandross - ‘Dance With My Father’
I can't believe you have not done any reaction to Adam Ant... Another great 80s English alternative synth pop band. "Desperate but not Serious," "Strip," "Stand and Deliver," "Goody Two Shoes," etc.
I was 13 when this song came out, and as the youngest of 7 kids, this song definitely spoke to me! When my kids watch the cartoon The Loud House, they always think "this is how Mom grew up," and totally a Madness feel! 😁 I'm with everyone who says One. Step. BEYOOOOONNND!!
That’s the style of Madness. Think you’ll find Suggs, the lead singer, has the same approach to most their songs. I understand why lyrics would be helpful but you really need to see the official videos Madness did to accompany their songs.
This song fit perfectly within the context of the early 80s. The song was incredibly popular and was an MTV and radio favorite. They were British, in the middle of the 2nd British invasion, so that made it quirkily cool. There is something about the song that just touched everyone's button. It's a song about a house and the family in it. In a way, parts of that song could be about any of our homes. I think it is a song about a home that we can't go back to once we're grown. That's what I think touches everyone's button.
Loved Madness as a kid something just grabbed me with baggy trousers love everything about them, musicians are fab too the sounds are well played and produced 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Our House is one of the most popular songs in the UK. Another super popular UK song you really need to listen to is 'Dirty Old Town' by 'The Pogues'. Absolutely awesome song!
Madness is a great band! Late '70s, '80s. They were a new wave, ska/reggae-punk (yall hear the horns and musical tone), post-punk from the UK (very English accent). Should've seen the video! They are funny, next videos to watch, "One Step Beyond" , "House of Fun", "It Must be Love", "Baggy Trousers", etc. Also, with this kind of genre, don't expect opera music like vocals ! lol. It could be worse (mumble rap).
This came out when I was a teen and we were the house in the middle of the street, where we all hung out. I love this song and band. Ska is so awesome.
Love madness, my very young youth...love baggy trousers. The singer talks that's his style. Always remember our house as a summer song with family when I was young, brilliant British band
Graham "Suggs" McPherson has a great voice, it is more highlighted in other songs, perhaps. Madness were great musical sociologists, they were really impactful in sharing a view of English society that others didn't and that would maybe be different to other's social experience. They are also a visual band, and while I get that seeing the lyrics helps, their videos are part of the total experience, too. I hope you grasp their value in future songs of theirs that you review.
The song has more depth than the first listen. Just one line in the background changes the feel of the song - "Something tells you that you've got to move away from it." Even though it describes the idyllic suburban life, there's still the anxiety and the yearning to move away.
Give "It Must Be Love" by these a try. I think J will like that better. Ohhhhh. I almost forgot! Here's another one. It's a "banger". "One Step Beyond" ❤🎼
