It's a damn shame when a Sheriff goes woke. Here in Illinois we have 90 counties out of 102 where the Sheriffs are refusing to enforce the unconstitutional gun law that was just signed by our Governor. I salute each and every one of them as they are doing their duty to uphold the constitution.

Anyone in Law Enforcement knows most Chief's and Sheriff's never did a days' worth of police work in their life, were great at playing the politics though. Least that was my experience.

Very convenient, along with Illinois' new gun control package being made a mockery of by their courts and sheriffs. I'm not one for conspiracies but a lot of these mass murders happen at convenient times with convenient suspects using convenient weapons. It's not like the government doesn't have a history of false flags and putting unstable people up to do these things.

Agree it's one thing for reporters or non-2A people to not understand firearms or have never dealt with firearms, training, etc.? Yet for a longtime Sheriff's and Law Enforcement whose had 25-30 years of experience with firearms, you can't be a cop without a gun in America nowadays, so obviously the Sheriff knows that and he also carries himself an "assault pistol" since he too has an extended magazine in his duty pistol/weapon. Pretty much only law enforcement can legally carry 90% of the firearms are illegal or "off-roster" and we have so many crazy laws in California. I am a photojournalist/news media photographer in California and I am a big 2A supporter. It sucks living here in California, it is hell in paradise. I live like 5 minutes on my bike to the beach, 2 miles from the ocean in Orange County and yet I hate my life and everything about California, except for it's beauty. Most people are complete selfish and conceded, they all have millions of dollars and it's ridiculous how bad it is. Every other or 1/3 car's in OC, are $100k+ Tesla or Mercedes, etc., etc.! We only get excited to see cars around here if it's Bugatti or Enzo, or other Super-car/Hyper-cars. We see everything here, yet most people work 3 part time jobs just to barely get by. You need to make yourself or combined income of at the very least $5,000+ a month to live here. Rent is $2200-$100,000's for an apartment per month, studios go for $1800-$2800 depending on location and other factors. Houses are $700,000-$200,000 except the medium is about $800k in OC, California. So we have an extreme income inequality issue not just in America but especially in places like New York City, San Fran or SoCal/Los Angeles area! You see all that wealth and all that poverty all at once. For every Mercedes or Ferrari we see here, you see about 2-3x as many tents or homeless and drug addicts, even normal people who are just working poor, we have no more spots available in almost the entire state now for RV/Van Life living. It's illegal to sleep in your vehicle at night here, lol and it's illegal to be homeless, to go to the bathroom, and since Covid bathrooms can be a luxury, and if you're a homeless person and it's obvious, they are going to make you buy something and or leave. So it is sad, I feel so horrible for those poor people and I've been there myself, although admittedly I've only spent a few nights outside or homeless, but that was out of choice, I wanted to be alone or disappear at the time, but I eventually came back and raised my now 12 year old, because she was born around the time I was briefly homeless, yet I had family and still do, so they help me out as far as a place to stay or live and I try to help them anyway I can, but it's been rough. I have PTSD and CTE, which is extremely rare and unfortunately not yet curable or really treatable, although I do hope to soon see a Dr., whose won the Noble Prize, and he supposedly has a drug or it's like a 4-drug cocktail approved by the FDA for immediate patient non-blind study or rather drug-trials...so I have some glimmer of hope. Colion, thank you (again) for being the lone voice of reason when it comes to the subject of gun violence. As someone who works and lives here in Kommifornia and in said county where it happened, the knee jerk, hand wringing, all-to-predictable narratives are starting to arise. Even before the most basic of facts came out, local politicians were decrying the usual: "racism and hate" motive, then it turns out the shooter was also of the same race and was a former dance instructor at the location. When this first started to come out in the news, especially with the generic description of: "suspect is a male in his 30s to 50s" those with objective minds balanced the known facts and the murders appeared to be of a personal nature as opposed to hate filled homicide. The suspect was known almost immediately, yet it took 5 hours to put his picture out (no name released) the detectives working the case where looking for him and ultimately with a lack of progress they had to put something out, but the media and politicians were already espousing their own slanted narratives in the meantime. The investigators still have not publicly named the make and model of the firearm used (not fitting the narrative) those who watched the unarmed employee wrestle the weapon away from the suspect easily identified it as the Mac 10. This weapon is not on the "permitted firearms" roster in this state (which also will hopefully to be found illegal eventually), local news media actually had a "2nd amendment scholar" on the radio falsely claiming: "While this gun is illegal in this state, anyone can go to Arizona or Nevada and purchase one and bring it back". What!?!?! Seriously? This from a "scholar"? (Over the counter firearm interstate sales to non residents was banned back in the 60s.) Sadly, there has been no mention and there will be no mention of the phone number to the Sheriff's department of the CCW permitting office for those who wish to protect themselves against violent crime in the future. There have been no calls to take the lessons learned by the US Postal Service who did take steps to prevent workplace violence after a series of shootings (when was the last time you heard someone "going postal"?). USPS took steps to harden their work locations - secure access, weapon screenings, dedicated and trained ARMED uniformed personnel (Postal Police) at facilities, zero tolerance on threats and anyone with anger management issues. None of these common sense steps have been put forth yet, instead it is training on: Run, Hide and as last resort Fight - don't get me wrong, all beneficial to someone bent on committing violence, but how about also CCW training and permitting people to defend themselves? (Maybe add at the end, of Run, Hide, Fight - Draw, Present and Fire). Already, the calls for "something to be done" at the federal level, which as you have pointed out is complete banning and ultimately confiscation. Do not look for anyone in politics here to advocate for CCW license, firearms training, "common sense" measures such as hardening locations (something as simple as locked door with controlled access), referral and identification of those with anger management or anti social personality traits (both the shooters at the dance hall and the farms in Half Moon bay were both known for their very explosive tempers, threats to others and even police contacts - yet they were allowed to remain at each place until they finally boiled over - and everyone is supposed to be shocked?). Even the Sheriff stated: "Something has to be done until the next one", Yes, quite correct. How about letting the public defend themselves with our dedicated rights available since 1791?
I largely agree with most of your post. And as one who now resides in Canada I ALSO agree with the Canadian approach on firearms, because we CAN: we don't have millions of handguns and automatics of any kind out there to begin with. Don't get me wrong: my four American grandparents homesteaded in Canada, and you hunted for your family, as you sold your livestock for cash to fund the farm needs. I had two kids with their dad recently take the CORE course (predecessor to getting your PAL firearms license) and one kid scored the only 100% on "proving it safe" the steps to ensure a firearm is not loaded. Why know and train? Because you might find one on the road, in a closet, even an abandoned building. Safety First. I can't IMAGINE my wife beating alcoholic nut case entitled pos neighbour thinking he had some kind of "Right" to own a firearm along with unlimited ammo, now on sale at WalMart. No thanks. But in the USA the millions of firearms are out of the bag, so good luck on solving THAT issue.

I agree with this sheriff, the state of CA should ban all the weapons used to assault individuals such as: swords, fists, bats, machetes, hammers, knives just to mention a few. Post a 4 ft x 4 ft "No Guns Allowed" sign to inform the criminals that no resistance will be encounted on all public places. The signs will make the population "feel" safe.

This is the first place I have heard anyone actually say what firearm was used. Every time that I heard "assault pistol" or "high capacity magazine" I have wondered exactly what was used.
