WOW! Someone Painted this Old Dresser BABY BLUE, so I RESTORED it | Mid Century Modern Restoration

I Found this Strange Looking Dresser for $15 in the Thrift Store. Unfortunately this vintage gem had been painted a baby blue color in an effort to make it look more modern. I brought it home and did my best to remove the layers of paint, but unfortunately, there were many challenges along the way. After sanding this entire dresser, there was still alot of paint left in the fibers of the wood., so I was forced to choose a finish that would conceal as much of the paint as possible. This was not my favorite restoration for many reasons, but I am grateful for yet another opportunity to learn from every project that comes through my shop. Thank you for joining me on this journey. Barry

Hey, Barry. I'm with all the other folks who want to affirm that you are still helping, because you walk through the world with the heart of a servant. I just retired from almost four decades in healthcare, and one of the great blessings of watching and listening to you is that you chose to leave healthcare, which was a way to care for yourself. When we put ourselves at the top of the list of people we care for, our hearts become more available to us and everyone else, and that shines through in both large and small ways in all of our encounters and endeavors. Thank you, Barry.

I love how the piece turned out. And I really appreciate the WISDOM you shared at the end of the video. It reminded me of a retired Navy captain that I used to work with, who eventually became a school bus driver. Many would have said that he had taken a big step down. But his experience in the Navy and service to school kids could not have been more valuable.

Barry I love the way you “fix furniture” and don’t sell yourself short your staging is actually quite good. I am in complete agreement we are all here to help one another with whatever skills we possess and listening to you tell the story of a piece and how you will restore it to its former glory in your gentle voice is a kind of therapy in itself. Btw I really like the darker stain it gives it a deeper richer look. Thanks and God bless.

Barry, it's important to remember that you still help people, just in a different way now. Your videos are calming and relaxing and I often play them when working on my own projects, often I just listen to the calming tone of your videos. It helps me relax and I'm sure there's thousands more people who do exactly the same. The world needs people like you doing stuff like this to provide an oasis of calm in a hectic world. You made the right decision for you and that's what matters most. If people judge you based on what you do for a living rather than the content of your character, then they are shallow and missing out or great friendships.

First off, I want to say _Thank You_ for what you do, and for what you have done! You do much more than "just fix old furniture", especially with the pieces of which you know their history and who owned them. In many of your videos, you have allowed a legacy to continue, and that is priceless! That dresser might not have come out as light as you wanted, but I really like the stain you used on it. It has a glow that a lighter stain wouldn't be able to provide. Another phenomenal restoration!

You did a beautiful job it may not have turned out as you had envisioned but cut yourself some slack you did above and beyond with it and it really is lovely. Your staging is lovely and again cut yourself some slack 😊 As someone who has had very serious mental health issues in the past (it is under control for now but I know that can change at anytime and I keep working on it) I always appreciate people like yourself because without you I never would have made it. Being the parent of special needs children is hard mentally (and physically) and add on other conditions it can be tiring so thank you for your original work with people and your work now which is another form of therapy and mindfulness for people like me 😊

A great job once again. I seem to remember reading about Michaelangelo who loved sculpting more than painting. I think he likened his process to removing the excess stone which revealed the statue which was buried within. You don't fix old furniture; you restore the beauty which has been buried under coats of paint. Always enjoy watching your work. Take care. Donna

This dresser is beautiful. It may not be what you saw in your "mind's eye" but it IS beautiful nonetheless! Regarding what you said about serving one another. A lady that I used to work with in the healthcare field, said that regardless of what we do in life... we're "waiting" on someone or something. At that point my view on what it is that I do for a living really doesn't matter as long as it pays me enough to keep a roof over my head. Service is service... so try to do it with a smile in your heart because it will show on your face! 🤗🥰 PS: You earned my subscription about 90k subscribers ago! You're almost to 100k... This video is awesome. The research done to find the origin makes watching more interest. by the way I’m a 73 year old grandma. I grew up in Philadelphia PA. My older brother was furniture maker for big manufacturer. He would bring home furniture of all types. He made our Mom a drop leaf table made of mahogany. It was beautiful. I was 10 yrs old. We had table under my Moms death. I had to settle stuff left in the house. I gave the table to one of my other brothers. It travel from Philadelphia to california. He got rid of it a few years ago. My brothe that’s a maker is now 94 yrs old. You won’t believe this but he still works in furniture factory in Philadelphia. He puts together nuts and bolts packs and any other accessories needed. Sorry this is long I wanted you to know I love what you do. Great job on the dresser. I live California now talk to my brother every week

That dresser is beautiful and I love the color. I also worked in the medical field. Loved my job. Felt fulfilled. Then had a major illness that left me disabled. My husband and I went to a junk store one day and saw a dilapidated armoire. It was a mess. My husband said “I believe in you. You see beauty”. I worked and worked. Is it perfect? No. Neither am I. But that armoire has spent the last 19yrs in our bedroom and I love it. Now if I could just figure out how to fix a drawer on a dresser I messed up😂. The back came off and I glued it back on. Taped the edges and used a strap to hold it tight. Guess I tightened the strap too much bc the sides bowed a bit and the drawer won’t fit in now. Idk how to get the glue off.

Hi Barry, Great job on the dresser! By coincidence, I just began the restoration of an 8- drawer Cherokee Manufacturing Company mid-century dresser this morning that a friend gave me. Fortunately, the quite battered finish on it is shellac, so stripper, scrubbing with alcohol and light sanding is doing the job. I'm leaving the 60 years of life-inflicted dings and bumps to display its history, which pretty much match my own 82 years of bumps through life. As with all of my restorations, this one will be donated to a nonprofit for them to sell. Like you, I spent much of my life finding ways to give service, though rarely through an avocation that I enjoy as much as this one. Keep up the good work and the thoughtful dialog.

This piece came out so beautifully! I like the slightly darker stain, and those drawer pulls and the legs definitely have the futuristic look of many MCM pieces. The paint seemed to be pretty well done, but you resurrected this piece. I love your videos, and your narration helps me to understand the steps you take as you process the pieces that you restore. You’re still helping people by taking us out of our world and ushering us into yours. I’m always excited to hear that something was made in Pennsylvania! I’ve lived my entire life within three counties in central Pennsylvania, and I love to see something that started out in my state restored or refurbished to extend its useful life. OK, here’s my guess about the history of this piece. A young family bought it, used, for their son’s nursery. They couldn’t afford pieces that already matched, so they bought paint and painted it all the same shade of baby blue. Some might call it tacky, but I think it’s an attempt to make the best of what they could afford.

I used to do alot of furniture restoration. People just love to paint old furniture. The worst one for me was a Serpentine Hat Box Tall Chest. It was painted a royal-ish blue. Now that was easy to come off as it had been painted ON the varnish. It was the white paint that was painted on the inside that drove me nuts. It took quite a while for me to get happy with it as I am a perfectionist. That might have been the last painted piece I did. It was a real "booger" but it sits in our bedroom with my matching dresser that I had to take apart and re-glue. I finished them with a hand rubbed Tung oil finish. ✌🏻♥️

Another stunning restoration Barry, you never disappoint. Your closing statement was so moving, I'm compelled to remark. We are, as human beings, and by design from our creator wired to be compassionate and to serve others...to a point. Sounds like you more than served your time in the "trenches" giving back to others. (Anyone who's worked in Healthcare knows.) Please know that although your place of employment may have changed, (not nearly as sterile 😅), you're most definitely still in service to others. I've lost track of the number of times you've put a smile on my face, or touched my heart and soul with both your talent for furniture restoration and more importantly your gift for touching one heart with your story telling ability. As mother, and furniture restorer I am compelled to encourage you to keep doing what you obviously love and are so very good at. You give me hope in the future in more ways than you could imagine. I love your messages with each video. This dresser is beautiful and doesn’t need fancy staging to see that and the care you put into it. I’m a RN of 20 years. I started my furniture journey 6 months ago and find both rewarding. One no more so than the other. Thank you for putting your heart and soul in your work. Whatever it may be 😊

the amazon store link is very helpful! in the future, i might try working on old furniture here and there. the process is so calming and fascinating to watch :) it’s also great hearing whatever philosophical life things you wanna talk about during your videos! i like them and it feels like sitting down with someone on a porch and enjoying the breeze while they talk about their experiences. and i loved the jetsons photos lol. it really does fit in quite well XD

Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is your future, Today is your life, LIVE IT!!! I don't restore people furniture but I do dollhouse furniture on a much smaller scale. So every little thing I can learn is a great thing. Have a great day

Barry; you’re one of the good guys. Your work is so professionally done and your thinking is so right on. One of the reasons we are all here is to help people in any way we can. It doesn’t matter whether it’s small or big. The joy of helping someone is a gift for yourself and the recipient. A win, win. Carol from California

Gosh, people say stupid things. As you know, most people who make mean, thoughtless, and belittling comments are only trying to make themselves feel better. My admiration for furniture refinishers like you is more aimed towards your patience, determination, and passion for your craft. Anyone can learn the necessary skills, but without the abovementioned qualities, the final results will always look half-hearted. Those qualities also translate to everyday life, and I constantly struggle with them, or I should say, a lack of them. People like you are role models for me, so keep doing what you're doing.

Absolutely beautiful Barry. A labor of love is required for renovating something old instead of always buying new. Passing these pieces of furniture to family and friends leave a mark on society that is positive and leaves our own blueprint of caring.

I think the dresser turned out great! I found your channel for the furniture refinishing, but I stayed because, at heart, you're a storyteller. I appreciate both aspects of your videos. Don't listen to the hateful comments, whether they're from the internet or inside your own head. You do beautiful work.

It looks great. I am a fellow healthcare worker and also spend my free time restoring old furniture. I haven't done it long, maybe a year, but it is my place to reflect and try to calm myself. Everyone needs an outlet and bringing beautiful pieces back to life makes my heart feel better. ❤
