STORYLINE:
A French military band played "God Save the Queen," and British and French flags flew along Paris'' Champs-Elysees on Monday as Queen Elizabeth II started a state visit marking a century of cooperation between the two nations.
The monarch''s three-day trip coincides with the centennial of the "Entente Cordiale", a colonial-era agreement that ended centuries of warring and hostility between France and Britain and paved the way for cooperation during two World Wars.
The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, arrived in France via the Eurotunnel, a link under the English Channel and a strong symbol of French-British cooperation.
The queen inspected troops with President Jacques Chirac and his wife, Bernadette.
The royal couple also attended a ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe to pay their respects to the war dead at the site of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Later the royal couple were officially received by the Chiracs at the presidential Elysee Palace, and delighted waiting fans by going for a walkabout.
The day''s final stop was an evening banquet at the Elysee Palace, where the Queen made a speech in French honouring the friendship and long history between the two countries.
Queen Elizabeth has made three other state visits to France and many other private or official trips here.
The visit comes as France and Britain are repairing ties strained over the Iraq war.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair was U.S. President George W. Bush''s strongest backer for war plans, while Chirac was among Bush''s most outspoken critics.

So much or Britain's history and culture is tied to France. I'm not sure that it's the other way around, although some French people may sort of enjoy experiencing their own lost royalty through that of another (and close) country.

J’assume c’est une norme dans la famille de royale. Ils doivent apprendre plusieurs langues possibles depuis jeune âge. En cas de la Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth The Second, les langues comme La Français, L’Allemande, L’espagnol et L’Italien sont obligatoires.

@@gordonsmith8899 Charles X was forced to abdicate after the Second French Revolution but he is not the last French monarch .... with the second revolution in 1830 it's Louis-Phillipe (more liberal monarch than Charles X) who take control of France but in 1848 there is another French revolution follow by the proclamation of the Second French Republic but the president elected is Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, the nephew of Napoleon 1 and in 1852 Louis-Napoleon end the Republic and founded the Second Empire and became Napoleon 3 ...
