Very nice. If I may ask, why didn't you opt to put the flange and bolts on the under/inside of the racks as to reduce the risk of damage to the couches?
@42Fab
@42Fab 4 года назад
If they went under they'd either have to stick out the front, risking snagging someone right at hip height or under and inside, meaning the joint would want to become a hinge. Having some above and below means you're having to bend a lot more steel in order to fail the joint, with no "lever" arm to make it easier.

I like and glad that you are open about your bids. I'm not in the fab business. So you don't have to worry about me competing. (I am near Hiram GA) but what this does is show OTHER Fabricators what they should be charging. When i was a contractor (engineering) I was underbidding real bad, I didn't know better. But after meeting and getting to know many other engineers, I started bidding very close to theirs. This keeps the market stable. I watch your videos because i like to make stuff, and frankly, I'm not very good. So I love learning from guys like you and getting ideas. So thanks and great job.

I'm not paranoid about fire but am all too aware that most fires are preventable. That being said I think I wouldn't keep the boxes under that table but that's what I do in my shop. If it works for you, no worries. I love the commenter's tears.
@42Fab
@42Fab 4 года назад
As this is the most sensible critique I'll reply. We use the underside of the table as a catchall trashcan because it alleviates the need to have a trash container taking up floor space, being in the way, etc. Any time we smell smoke all work stops until we find the source. That is most often either someone using a dull bit on wood, the oscillating tool (smokey little bitch), or someone having lit a cigarette (I do not have control over who smokes inside) with a match. We also take the obvious and important precautions like having fire extinguishers all over the place and operating in a building with well over $200k worth of sprinklers everywhere. People can have their worries, that's fine, but the constant whining of "OMG fire" is indicative not of concern but of the need for attention and the innate human attribute of a negative comment being more likely to illicit a response, triggering that attention seeking with a hit of dopamine. People make their own decisions, these are ours, they are uncontested by both our insurance provider and the fire marshal, both of which regularly inspect the building.

I’m surprised you don’t mark up materials. Do you charge the shop rate for picking up steel and drop off of the project?
@42Fab
@42Fab 4 года назад
We do charge drive time to delivery, our materials are delivered free, but we charge time if we have to go get them due to a customer rush. In short, I charge for my time, that's the thing I'm selling, everything else is at cost
@matthew35673m
@matthew35673m 4 года назад
Personally, I’d be putting a small markup for covering your time ordering, invoicing, book keeping, receiving stock, dealing with suppliers, etc. even if it’s only small. Standard markup I’ve come across though is around 1.6.

Wow I was way off. As long as you’re happy with the bid price that’s all that really matters. For something like this did you track the hours to see if your shop hours actual time matched up to your estimate hours? This was a bigger project and I would have expected 3 hours per table. Either way, thanks for the video.
@42Fab
@42Fab 4 года назад
We'll do a full bid breakdown on patreon, but yeah, we were right about where I expected to be. The install took a bit longer, but not bad. Real hours ran over a bit, but they were more Tommy welding for the sake of the practice than me welding at my normal speed and I had other things to work on so it didn't hurt us.

@@jonhy2x4 you do well in business when you understand the context of a job. Couch storage for a charity warehouse. The customer wants cheap and strong, which they got. Sure adding 10 minute per to get every BB wouldn't be a big deal, but that's 5 hours ($500) added to the job and makes no difference in the finished products use

I clearly disclose my sponsorships, as I did with this video. HTP provides me machines for use, review and presentation. I regularly also purchase goods and consumables from them as they make good stuff. I further earn a small commission when people purchase from them via my links. Over the years we're probably about even on what they've sent out vs what I've bought. They do not pay me for positive reviews and do not request to review my videos before publication. My sponsorship motto is "you can buy my time, but you cannot buy my voice" aka, I am happy to share a good product with my audience, but no one gets to tell me what to say about it.

We generally run .030 wire in the machines. As most of what we do is 16-10ga it's a good wire for being able to lay metal without burning through. I like to keep one machine with the 15' gun on it and that can have a hard time pushing .030, so we run .035 in it. I almost never have the need to venture into some of the more exotic wires and combos, as much as I LOVE getting to turn up into spray arc and lay into a weld.
