Even on tarmac stages real WRC cars behave like bucking broncos,; jumping, bouncing and sliding down the road... when we play rally games/simulators we want to experience this behaviour.. In this video we look at the behaviour of real WRC cars on tarmac stages and compare them to three games: the original DiRT Rally, WRC Generations and the new EA Sports WRC (2023).
For longer videos of real WRC cars see these two great compilations, used in this video:-

The handbrake is probably most annoying on wrc, even on hairpins, it either does nothing or insta-180s, its unusable, u can use a handbrake on tarmac in real life, its called drifting even..

I agree. Also, the behavior when going out of hairpins in a Rally1 car feels like the power is only going to the front wheels (or the vast majority of power is going there). It's really annoying because in WRC9 and WRC10 you never had this problem.

The cars in EA Sports WRC have very little suspension movement; they look like magic carpets; they barely roll or pitch or bounce like the real cars do... and since computer games/simulators rely 100% on visuals to convey speed and car behaviour, it means the cars in EA Sports WRC feel very boring to drive... whereas the cars in the Original DiRT Rally (and WRC Generations) felt very exciting to drive because they replicated the roll, pitching and bouncing behaviour of the real cars very well.

Why you don't added DR 2.0 to comparison? It better or worst than other games in that behaviour?

Hmm, on one hand the tarmac physics are the best Codies ever put in their rally game. I wouldn't want to go back to DR or DR 2.0. On the other hand I agree that the cars are not dynamic enough. The weight transfer is conveyed in the physics, but not in visuals. I can see the amazing game WRC could be in a year or so of additional development.
@potatogirlcultist19
@potatogirlcultist19 8 месяцев назад
RBR (NGP7) has the best tarmac physics by far. Yeah the cars are a little hard to correct when sliding but the suspensions, the tyre grip, the drivetrain behavior all feel pretty similar to what you see on TV.

From what I can tell with playing EA WRC is that suspension just doesn't exist. Its more of a "this can break" mechanic rather than something that actually matters while driving. Hell I've broken my suspension entirely during stages and the car drives exactly the same. Weight transfer is not existent in EA WRC as well, but it gives you the illusion of weight transfer because the rear of the cars tend to break so easily with the tiniest movement. Overall, not too impressed by EA WRC. Very dull game. But hey, we got changeable seasons right?! XD
@richmachin6741

I'm 100% with you: the dynamic response (rolling, pitching, etc) should be progressive; it should happen from the moment you start to input steering/throttle/brakes, not like a switch. This lack of progressive dynamic response makes the cars feel dull to drive, which they really shouldn't.

@@richmachin6741Unfortunately you did an objective analysis. suspensions should be an integral part of a car and not a switch that activates or deactivates them. Note how the car is stopped, when starting, when you turn the steering wheel it shows no sign of moving at all, when instead it should have a very small shaking due precisely to the wheels moving. You can try it in any simulator or in reality. from here it is already clear that the suspensions, setup, are of no use in this game, they are optional and do not affect the performance of the race in the slightest. unwatchable replays, especially on asphalt (on dirt being softer you can see something moving)... unfortunately it looks like a board. Weight is another problem in EAwrc in my opinion, as in dirt 2.0. They are a bit light giving you absolute control of the vehicle even at high speeds. Instead it has an importance, especially in a change of direction. I'm sorry, all this disappoints me... it has great potential... wonderful, immersive audio, with attention to detail, which I have never heard in any simulator until now. even at low revs, the sound is a melody, when you know that in any game, even the most famous, you can always hear that initial "pitch" at low revs. It pisses me off at Codemasters because the rest leaves a lot to be desired, graphics included. I can understand the "everyone has to like it" or I'm under EA policy, but launching it as a real simulator and leaving some help for newbies would have been more interesting. And honestly in 2023 playing with Rbr again to prove what a real rally is is a little tiring

Is this consistent across all tarmac stages? It looks like this one (which I assume is Japan) is a lot smoother than what I've seen. Also, could the racing line affect the bounciness? I feel like you were a bit conservative with your driving in EA WRC. In the IRL video shown we can see the drivers cut even the smallest corners which makes their cars bounce because of the unevenness. I do get your point however, the cars look a lot stiffer than they should've been, as if they were competing in something like NASCAR.
@richmachin6741

No this is Croatia! It should be a rough road.. but it is super smooth.... That is part of the problem... but even on a smooth road the cars should exhibit a dynamic response to driver inputs; I made another video comparing the car dynamic behaviour on Assetto Corsa: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uryfUh0IgMM.html By comparison the cars in AC are very exhilerating to drive...

Stiffening the suspension should REDUCE the body roll; the point demonstrated in these videos is that the cars in EA Sports WRC don't roll already, and neither do they hop and skip over the surface (which is what they would do if they have over stiff suspension); instead they look (and feel) like they have magic self-leveling suspension 🤣

Wrc has much more powerful weight transfer compared to DR or DR2, these two games are notorious for their horrible tarmac physics, Wrc has infiniely better tarmac physics. Even gravity (jumps) is so much better in WRC. Have you ever played assetto corsa? Assetto is known for propably best tarmac physics of all games. Have you driven a real car? I doesnt feel like DR at all.
@richmachin6741
@richmachin6741 8 месяцев назад
In this video I am talking about the car behaviour in terms of it’s mass-elastic modelling, or put simply; the way the various parts of the car model responds to driver inputs, meaning how it rolls, pitches, yaws and bounces as you accelerate, brake and steer. This is distinct from the car “handling” which I gather is what you mean when you say “Physics”. It’s the response of the mass-elastic model which makes the cars feel “alive” when you drive them (the roll, pitch, yaw and “bounce” are experienced even in the cockpit view) and therefore why the cars in EA Sports WRC feel dull to drive. Like everyone else; I was really looking forward to EA Sports WRC, but it has really turned out to be disappointing. What I see is a lot of people defending the game, when they really shouldn’t because it’s a step backwards in so many areas… maybe they defend it because we’ve all got so bored with the stages in DR2.0 that ANY new game is a welcome change… (By the way; I have my MSA motorsport licence and have driven every major UK circuit and Hillclimb venue, plus Spa and Nordshleife Nurburgring in cars ranging from Caterham 7 to Radical SR3; I can tell you right now that real cars do not behave like they do in EA Sports WRC, but you can see that in the video 😊). Hopefully EA /Codemasters can address this in a future version.
@RG-ql3fd
@RG-ql3fd 8 месяцев назад
@@richmachin6741 well, I do not think that for example pitch is represented in cockpit view in DR as much, compared to WRC where if you brake it looks like you gonna headbang your steering wheel. Well if you driven all these circuits, You should see the handling on tarmac is more like assetto corsa, which in my opinion is best tarmac simulator, the grip on tarmac in DR is nonsense, You are just in permanent slide, that is not realistic at all, WRC is big upgrade in this area.

Neither DR2 or EA WRC has gotten tarmac physics right. They're opposite ends of the spectrum, Tarmac in DR felt like gravel, tarmac in EA WRC is like a light switch. You either are glued to the road or you're understeering off the mountain, no inbetween. Whereas it should be varying levels of grip based on suspension load, aerodynamics, tire wear and compound. Its not an on or off thing and thats what EA WRC makes it feel like.

@@RG-ql3fd Just for you I made a second video showing the car behaviour in Assetto Corsa vs EA Sports WRC: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uryfUh0IgMM.html you can see that the cars in AC are much more 'dynamic' than in EA Sports WRC. For me driving in AC (and the other games in this video) is a lot more exhilarating than EA Sports WRC, which feels dull by comparison, because of this dynamic response.

The only conclusions I see from this video is that: 1) The WRC1 cars in EA Sports WRC have more downforce than the earlier generation cars in DIRT Rally 1, and that 2) WRC Generations is horribly lacking in grip and the cars swerve all over the place. Mind you, I also liked the tarmac driving in DIRT Rally 1 and wouldn't mind if it was replicated in WRC.

@azarisLP 8 месяцев назад
@@richmachin6741 Body roll/pitch is not the same as weight transfer. Weight transfer is invisible, it always happens regardless of how stiff the suspension is. The suspension is working in EA WRC, there's just less roll/pitch because the cars aren't setup to be slop fests by default. Try increasing the ride height and you will see the cars become sloppy and start to roll and pitch a lot more.
@richmachin6741
@richmachin6741 8 месяцев назад
@@azarisLP I know that... that's why I call it a weight transfer "effect"... because the EFFECT of weight transfer is that it causes the suspension to compress and extend, hence the chassis rolls and pitches... the example I have given in the video (e.g at 1:19) shows that modern Rally cars in Tarmac spec do not have super rigid suspension... and if they did they would hop and skip more over bumps.. the cars in EA Sports WRC neither roll and pitch, nor hop and skip they just glide over surfaces... honestly just try something like Assetto Corsa and you'll see that the car dynamics in EA Sports WRC are really very bad, and nothing like reality. But look, if you enjoy the game, that's great, for me, as someone who holds an MSA licence and has driven cars on track from Caterham 7 to Radicals SR3, plus 2WD and 4WD rally cars, it's disappointing how unrealistic it feels. I had high hopes for the WRC licence when I heard it was going to Codemasters... 😞
