This time we venture to Wrest Park which can be found in Silsoe, Bedfordshire, on the History Roadshow. The manor of Wrest Park was first recorded in the reign of Edward the Confessor, it was however the de Grey family that made Wrest Park House what it is today. The family settled here in the 13th century and remained for a further 600 years.
This house is the creation of one man, Thomas Earl de Grey. When his aunt died and left him Wrest park, rather than try and improve the original medieval house , he demolished it and in 1830 began work on the family home we see today.
Once through the central doors you enter the stunning staircase hall, originally used to hold receptions, it climbs to the top of the building being capped by a glazed oblong roof which allowed light to flood in . The staircase handrail is of an unknown wood of south america, it was given to Thomas when he was first lord of the admiralty.
Twin staircases guide the eyes up to the portraits which surround the hall showing royalty and family members. The frames of the portraits were also designed to compliment the whole area. Each pattern of these being taken from de Greys books of french architecture.
Since 1947 many of the gardens buildings and ornaments have been preserved by the ministry of works, recently English Heritage secured a million pound lottery investment to develop the park for visitors.
Today maybe you can seek the inspiring design ideas that once Thomas Earl de Grey dreamed of when building his family home, at Wrest Park.
