Wrestlemania night 2 was the first time my girlfriend has ever watched wrestling. She loved the show. She really loved Bayley vs Iyo and was so invested in Cody vs Roman. She didn't know any of these people before that night. She popped when Cody won and teared up. To me that makes it the match of the year and show of the year.
I can only imagine how you felt witnessing all that unfold, the person you consider the one enjoying and engaging in something you feel so passionately about must have felt pretty good
@@darbytheturtle it was pretty awesome. I loved seeing her reaction and enjoying something I have loved since I was a kid. She said she wants us to go see Mania live in Vegas. Because she knows I love Vegas and wrestling. Needless to say she is pretty great.
I don’t think you could name a better retirement match than Sting’s. Just can’t imagine the feels of coming out with your sons decked out in your previous styles throughout the decades.
@@TheMadmage It was...until he soured it. Then it was Shawn's...until he soured it. Trips hopefully will not make the same mistake, as it could be very scary for him given his reasons for retiring.
I was at Revolution watching it live. And once sting’s son came out, he everyone was on their feet and we didn’t sit down until we got in our cars to leave. It was wild. A perfect send off a legend, no. A perfect send off for an Icon. Doing what sting does. Yeah the Darby spot was a bit much, but it also meant Sting got to go out on his own and on top. As he should.
I'm happy that Dijak vs Briggs vs Femi was mentioned, it's one of my favorites this year and I would've loved to have seen it at 10 but hey the fact it was mentioned is good enough
Tempest nailed it. AEW put together Oscar award winners, and WWE make Marvel movies. Your personal taste will dictate which you like more and it is very possible to enjoy both. But not everything is for everyone
As far as matches in and of themselves. For builds/feuds/stories the opposite could be argued. That’s what is great about AEW being on the scene. The fans have a choice. Personally, I find WWE storytelling to be a lot of wheel spinning. Like, yes, the rivalry lasted 3 months but it could have been 1 and nothing would have been lost. Drew and Punk have been feuding the whole year but only 4 or 5 things have actually happened. Bad example, Punk is hurt but still.
I disagree because for that comparison to apply was to say WWE was just the spectacle and that's it.The reality is that Roman vs Cody had way more storytelling than Osprey vs Danielson no matter how much they tried to sell it as great story. They told a great story in the ring in terms of moves but that is it.Roman vs Cody was months and years of story telling coming to an end in an epic match.
@@michaelrivera8360 I think that's AEW flaw to an extent. They don't tell stories as good as wwe can. Like, Cody v Bloodline for the build up to wrestlemania may have been the greatest build to any match
If wrestling is storytelling through fake fighting all centered on how that makes fans feel, Roman vs Cody 2 is in conversation for greatest match of all time not just this year.
1. Will Ospreay vs Bryan Danielson AEW Dynasty 2. Cody Rhodes vs Roman Reigns Wrestlemania 40 3. Swerve Strickland vs Will Ospreay AEW Forbidden Door 4. Will Ospreay vs Konosuke Takeshita AEW Revolution 5. Swerve Strickland vs Hangman Page AEW Dynamite 2/7 6. Ilja Dragonov vs Trick Williams NXT Vengeance Day 7. Hook vs Samoa Joe AEW Dynamite 1/17
Osprey vs Danielson was so good that 5 weeks later Luke thought "you know what would be a great match for All In? Ospreay vs Danielson first time ever."
@@Alucard-A-La-Carte Average "just enjoy wrestling" fan when someone else enjoys wrestling with good stories. "Just watch bangers with zero build, motivation, or payoff and be satisfied! If I like it everyone must be content!"
I agree really realistically Roman vs Cody and Ospreay and Danielson should have tied because both where match of the year for 2 different reasons lol@@Alucard-A-La-Carte
2024 for wrestling has been some of if not the best wrestling I think we’ve seen in a very long time however there has been plenty of tragic events too however to keep it positive . I keep thinking back like man this year has been so fast but then I think about all the wrestling matches that have happened so far that have been five star six star Classics. Truly blessed to be living right now. Future generations will be looking back at this man. They’re so lucky. The quality
@@100carlosfermin it is when you realise I just meant that one was the big blowout with all the bells and whistles and such. And the other a smaller, heartfelt thing that's just purely the thing.
@@thomassinclair6828yeah but Roman vs Cody had storytelling I don't get how the guys fail to realize actually Osprey vs Danielson is actually Godzilla x Kong because it was just a great wrrstling match but had no real story. The told a story in the ring.Cody vs Roman had the storytelling but with the big Marvel production. They are acting as Cody vs Roman was just this thrown together mess when it was not it was feud with story.
@michaelrivera8360 again... you miss the point. It's a smaller story vs a larger one. One has all the bells and whistles, the other smaller and more contained. Why is this hard for you?
love these vids guys, appreciatethe effort that goes into them. :). a vid like this going through th MOTYs reminds me how much i love Pro wreslting and is a fun all round chat
The difference between Ospreay vs. Danielson & Cody vs. Roman is simply the difference between Godzilla x Kong & Godzilla Minus One. Both good to great in their own right & up to your preferences. What a beautiful time in wrestling where we can have matches like these that are great for their own reasons.
That is not a correct statement Godzilla X Kong had just spectacle and no story telling.Roman vs Cody had story telling with spectacle. When you look at it Danielson vs Osprey would be Godzilla X Kong because it was just great action but no real feud beyond"who is the best wrestler"
Danielson vs Saber at WK is my favorite match this year. Last year's WrestleDream was my favorite the year before. I think Danielson vs Ospreay is the better match due to clash of style. But, Saber and Dragon os my favorite flavor of wrestling.
@@screwdarulez1000100% It’s not even about when they recorded. They have to get all the sheets back and tally them. June 30th is the cut off for matches That’s why it’s a half a year list. Forbidden door will be eligible at the end of the year list.
I loved Bayley vs Iyo so much. It makes me mad that I finally got my Bayley face turn and it feels like they've done very little with her current run until that Piper match at Clash.
Cody v Roman II was amazing in its overbooked spectacle. Ospreay v Danielson was amazing in its underbooked work rate. Neither was really better than the other. They were both perfection.
So I been watching Sting since early 90's to see him retain in his last match n how crazy the match was my one of favorite this year. The Darby spot was CRAZY but I seen Mick get blown up set on fire n thrown 20 feet twice. So it didn't bother me. I just wanted him to land on them .
Rhodes Vs Reigns is my number 1. The happiest of endings to a long term story. WWE listening to and rewarding fans. Kayfabe explanations for Undertaker's involvement: his history with Reigns, plus as the noted head of Wrestlers Court, he's enforcing justice.
Tempest when Women's MITB 2023 happened: This was dangerous and when that happens that's when I don't like wrestling Also Tempest: Darby Allin going through the glass was a great spot
This list and particularly number 1 and 2 is exactly why WWE and AEW are vital in the landscape. I have fallen off of AEW weekly because the tv storytelling just isnt it and i hate the constant vs. WWE energy they give off but i would never deny the match quality And well Cody vs Roman speaks for itself. Great list lads and Wrestletalkers! Great list indeed.
I think my top three would be: 1.) Mayu Iwatani vs Saree: Stardom Grand Queendom 2024 One of my only three 7* matches and all three are Joshi matches. 2.) Cody vs Roman/ Mayu Iwatani vs Syuri (both 6* to me) 3.) Swerve vs Osprey/ Copeland vs Malakai Black/ Iyo vs Bayley (all on the same level to pick just one there.)
I can't complain about No. 2 and No. 1 and Tempest hit the nail on the head about it.. If you like a big event with all the drama and is a total box office banger, then No. 2 is for you. If you more into actual wrestling where the story begins with the ringing bell and the story wins the price for best movie, then No. 1 is for you.. Ospreay vs Danielson for me was just incredible and I'm damn sure, by the end of this year, we will see this match, with Rhodes vs Reigns, in the Top 5..
For me, my MOTY… so far is Young Bucks/Sting and Darby; just loads of silly fun with a death match tone to it. Not even a long time Sting fan, but that was the perfect send off for him. That glass bump by Darby is still ingrained into my mind. Other favourites include: Ospreay/Takeshita, Roman/Cody 2, Swerve/Ospreay, Dijak/Oba/Briggs (Big meaty men slapping meat), Ospreay/Danielson (not as high for me as the other Ospreay matches, my hot take), Gunther/Sami, FTR/BCC (Revolution), Rhodes/Styles (Backlash), and Slater/Speedball (North Wrestling- it’s on RU-vid, go watch it. Underrated) Honourable mentions: Perez/Grace, Anarchy in the Arena, ZSJ/Cassidy and Wolf Dogs/Axiom and Frazier (both NXT Stand and Deliver and NXT)
Storytelling in wrestleing is a real important part of it, however I like it to be done in the ring, if cinema wrestleing is your thing and you want years of drama 15 min entrances and sports entertainment thats cool. But i do think its easier to watch a great in ring match.especially if youre re watching for a list
Thank you. Everyone thinking a 20 minute banger CAN'T POSSIBLY have story is just silly. The story is told physically through the wrestling. Some people just don't get it unless the wrestlers literally stop mid match to shout the story at eachother.
Very inatriguing top 10. Here was mine so far this year: 10. Samoa Joe vs Hook AEW Championship Dynamite 9.Sting & Darby Allin vs The Young Bucks AEW Tag Titles AEW Revolution 8.Iyo Sky vs Bayley WWE Women’s Championship Wrestlemania XL Night 2 7. Gunther vs Sami Zayn IC Title Wrestlemania XL Night 1 6. Bryan Danielson vs Kazuchika Okada NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18 5. Cody Rhodes vs AJ Styles WWE Championship Backlash France 4. Ilja Dragunov vs Ricochet KOTR R1 WWE Raw 3. 2024 Women’s Royal Rumble Royal Rumble 2. Bryan Danielson vs Will Ospreay AEW Dynasty 1 Roman Reigns vs Cody Rhodes WWE Championship Wrestlemania XL Night 2
That top 2 is the greatest top 2 ever. Wrestling is a variety show, and those two matches are the prime example (throw in Sting’s retirement match too)
Good idea to do a halfway list, as G1 and 5 Star GP season is now coming and they'll add a few matches. Although, i'm disappointed that there aren't more womens matches here, especially when Sareee and Mayu Iwatani are doing the best work right now. Hell i'd have them be 1 and 2 in the top 10 this year.
Sami beating Gunther is a such a wet fart on an ending for his reign. Just some rando came outta nowhere and beats him for no reason. I love Sami but it should have been Chad Gable.
I think a great wrestling match is a combination of great in ring work but also character development and emotional investment. Also star power and how a crowd is worked. Without these things its just men jumping around and groping each other. Look at the punk v mjf fued or omega v hangman fueds a few years ago in aew. For me these have matches that reach much higher highs than the ospreay v brian match because of all the work and context leading up the a big pay off. Its about caring about the characters not the moves.
Despite thinking the build could've been better because the rock was taking up too much tv time for weeks & I think they were some attempts to try to sabotage it so people wouldn't want it to main event night one. I think Bayley vs iyo was a really good match. But if you think bayley vs iyo sky was a match of the year so far you should probably check out sareee vs maiyu iwatani for the iwgp women's champion, mayu iwatani vs syuri for the iwgp women's champion & sareee & bozilla vs giulia & utami because I thought these women's matches are just as go as bayley vs iyo sky if not better. I also expect giulia vs sareee, utami hayashishita vs iyo sky & maybe Roxanne perez vs giulia to be in the match of the year category when they happen this year.
I'm sorry but I'm not understanding why they keep saying "It made no sense for the Undertaker to be in the Cody match" because it absolutely did! First of all, Roman was Undertaker's last "official" Wrestlemania opponent and its where he left all his gear in the ring, signifying he was done. THEN the following night Roman had the arrogance to go "This is MY yard now" during the promo that perfectly showed he was best as a heel. Undertaker was linked to Roman, especially at Wrestlemania and understandably had some revenge that was worth getting
I prefer the analogy of aew being like a 10 minute guitar solo and wwe is a great pop song. While I admire the skill of 10 minute guitar solo, it's more like a technical demonstration that leaves me cold and I'm not coming back for more. A band working together to create a great song and all the elements are cooking, That's great wrestling
Well said the guy in the Mask aew has all the MVP of wrestlers Will ,Kenny ,Bryan,Okada what a line up aew is the New York Yankees of 1998 or ? Other years wwe may get the numbers what not but aew is where the best players are 🎉🎉❤this is ain’t no wcw related or repeat again sorry Eric B. Tk aew are here to stay
31:10 Honestly that’s probably a great way to put it by Tempest. Reigns-Cody is like Oppenheimer where it’s just the perfect kind of “theater experience” movie. Ospreay-Danielson is Godzilla Minus One where everyone comes out after seeing it going “this is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen”.
Sammi zayne vs Gunther is on this list I'm sorry I have to disagree on that and would rather have Gunther vs Jey Uso on WWE raw because u get Gunther chopping down his opponent which is what was missing from his WM match against SZ if Gunther would have beaten SZ then yes put it on the list but since he didn't take him seriously take it off the list like Simon Miller I give that choice a down 👎
Personally I think Gunther vs. Sami is the most overrated match of the year. The story going into it was that Chad Gable needed to teach Sami strategy, since Gunther never gives his opponent the opportunities that Sami always capitalizes on to win. But then Sami won because Gunther stopped trying to win, and gave Sami the exact opportunity that we were told Gunther never gives his opponents.
I love nxt would have like to see more love there and Kyle fletcher and takashta needed more love but nah I liked it but I don’t think will Danielson was that great because will id just better start up but that take love the videos
@@superlegoman2003 what? He won royal rumble twice, main evented biggest WrestleMania, ended the longest reigning champion in modern history, won one of the biggest matches of the decade, had great championship matches and the face of the biggest wrestling company on the planet
According to tempest's mindset, any match no matter the pre existing story can be better than just 2 really awesome wrestlers trying to see who is better. I wish i could think that simply but i need all the drama and soap opera wrestling is to make everything 10x better.
My point was more so that myself and I would assume the vast majority of fans want a good match and a great story combined right. Not a nothing story and a great match. NOT SAYING TEMPEST IS WRONG TO THINK THAT. I know plenty of people who 1st thing after the match wanna know star ratings when I think wrestling should be how you felt after the match finished, not thinking about the work rate.
Wont list both halves of the bloodline mania matches for the same reason you don't put all the lord of the rings movies in your top 10... But doesn't question listing all of the star wars franchise aka Ospreay matches.
