Award-winning author Min Jin Lee brings a fresh perspective to an ancient image of a boy pulling a thorn from his foot-Spinario-rendered exquisitely by the artist Antico (also known as Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi). Lee’s reflections on the daily struggle of being an artist is honest and moving, and invites a close look at and careful consideration of the Spinario itself.

The Spotlight series features new perspectives on a single work from The Met collection each month. Familiar and celebrated works serve as the focal point for dialogue-posing questions, building understanding, and conveying how the presence of the work in the Museum has altered, limited, or enhanced the work’s interpretation. The series explores different ways of knowing, and relates to themes beyond art and museums through the expertise and personal experience of invited guests.

Oh my soul. How wonderful was this message. Thank you for being insightful enough at the Met to give this remarkably humble women a few minutes to share her reason for doing and just being. We all struggle so with our thorn but it is the thing the drives everyone if we are truly honest with ourselves. The gap between…It’s both the problem and the solution if we can just persevere. So in awe of this little video and it’s message!

I started watching this and I was sceptical… I thought this is going to be another overblown description of art where the historian sees more meaning than actually exists or was originally intended by the artist. It wasn’t that at all. She’d carefully, quietly and humbly observed in the most beautiful way. The metaphorical meaning of the statue was articulated so perfectly, it really hit home. It does describe what if feels like to be human… I’m not sure if she tapped into the artists psyche because like she said in the beginning, “these are impossible questions”… but if I were them, and I could hear her words, I would be deeply touched by her interpretation. ✨
