Dan, That piece was lovely in the end. (And at various times during the journey too.). What does "hybrid" mean in the context of a piece like this? I think I've gleaned that it means not purely orchestral, but 'hybreeding' with what, electronic music?

Beautiful work as always Dan! What is the basic spec of your computer? I use a 10-core iMac Pro (32GB RAM, SSD Hard Drives for FS Libraries), but it always stops quite often when I use multiple FS Kontakt samples like your project. (Buffer size set to 1024) When I look at your workflow, even using this many Kontakt libraries, your cpu guage doesn't seem to overload. Any special tips for that?

I’m still on the intel Mac mini. I know quite a few people who have the M1 machines, but all of them also have intel. If you only have one computer, I’d say keep to Intel until companies have caught up with the architecture. It’s just not stable enough yet, and I can’t risk losing pro projects

Hi Dan. Very interesting to see how you work and thanks. In terms of "mixing as you go" do you gain stage - or is that not necessary with plug ins?
@DanKeenMusic
@DanKeenMusic 3 года назад
Thanks! Yes I do gain stage. Particularly with analog emulation plugins, be careful not to send too hot a signal otherwise you may create unwanted distortion / other artefacts. The same can be said for busses. As a general rule, I record into each track at about -18dB and each bus at about -12dB. I calibrate each plugin so that it doesn't become louder by enabling the plugin (unless that's what you're going for). This helps to critique your mixes more accurately and assess if the plugins are acting on the sounds properly, rather than sounding better just because they're louder. Hope that helps!

hey, I'm working with some ambient pads from piano book for an electronic track but they take too long to build and decay to fit into the rhythm of the track, they start falling behind because it takes a little while for the next chord to start even though the midi is programmed in the right place. I tried adjusting the sample start time and this didn't help. Any tips on keeping it locked in with my beat?
@DanKeenMusic
@DanKeenMusic 3 года назад
The sample start times are unlikely to help here unless the samples also have a slow-ramping volume. The thing to adjust is Attack and Release, how quickly the notes fade in and out
@septemberwalk
@septemberwalk 3 года назад
@@DanKeenMusic thanks, even with the attack and release the fastest they can be this particular sound still seems to be falling behind, maybe its already baked into the samples and they're just too ambient to quickly switch on beat like a more dry synth would

02:00 The missing aspect of this writing is what the Emotion you are striving to evoke in your score AND what you're doing in a premeditated way to achieve that Emotion AND whether the end result is close to the desired Affect. 'Writing with purpose' is different than 'Writing at random' . "I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet" is not a higher-order thought process. You reveal the answer at 34:30, "I can't really choose how to write a piece" . What?! A composer's job is to write to/for a specific Emotion and Evoke that Emotion in the listener.
@DanKeenMusic
@DanKeenMusic 3 года назад
For videos like these, writing with little to no premeditation is favoured as it shows an unplanned spontaneity, something that is valued on this platform because it’s authentic. Of course, if I had a brief in mind, I could be more specific about my choices, but the function of this exercise was more to compose freely, and go with my inspirations. That would be a nice direction for future videos, though
