Writing On The Wall is a documentary by Handcraft Creative.
Winnipeg has one of the largest and most well preserved collections of hand-painted signs in North America.
Our downtown core is covered with advertisements and store signs from years gone by that were painstakingly hand painted by highly skilled artists. While ads, store signs, and billboards certainly have changed since the turn of the century, the artform is still kept alive by a few individuals and its history is captured on the sides of buildings and signs we pass each day, often without noticing.
Craig Winslow brings his Light Capsules projection project to Winnipeg’s Exchange District. Matt Cohen documents the design history of these signs. Rick Wagner recounts changes in the industry, and The Travelling Sign Painters find a new path for their designs.

I started signwriting in 1976. "Oh,that's a dying trade" people said. I'm 63 now,still painting,they're still saying it! People love seeing it done though.

I did a bit of signwriting during my 17 years as a coal man, mostly lettering the lorries and the odd shop front, but I made things hard, basically having to draw the lettering with a Chinagraph pencil, and doing basic fonts, but I was never happy with my work, because I knew I lacked the BIG, thing that makes the difference of being a good signwriter and what I was capable of and that is an artistic eye, because of the lettering and advertising done by signwriters are works of art, especially some of glass etching and gold leaf work, real works of art, also I'm scared of heights haha, keep up the good work guys.

I have been teaching myself aspects of the sign industry, lots of mistakes along the way but no old masters around any more to mentor me, but I love it being able to create.

It's a tough art and the masters (like Rick) are pretty humble. We got lucky to catch him and have him in the doc.

Being a long time Walldog, I had not seen this effect being used before. This struck me so hard that I had to call my wife in to replay it for her! I Love the way the animated bottle fills, and the rotation of the can of ham. So very clever!!

Amazing! That's what we love about it too! It's a way to honour the past without impacting it. There are currently 2 permanent installations in Winnipeg that Craig and Matt have installed in the last year! More to come!

"It Should Happen to You" is a 1954 American romantic comedy film starring Judy Holliday, Peter Lawford and Jack Lemmon; About a woman who rents a Billboard to write her name and becomes a household name! Very funny classic

So well done! Kudos to the production team and the talented artists who participated in this fascinating project! Used to work frequently in the exchange district and would not only admire the architecture but the ghost signs in abundance. All you had to do was take a moment to look up and recognize the skill and history of these advertisements. Thanks so much for posting!

I always loved the advertising in the exchange. The film industry would benefit from some of these signs being restored and the retro look would enhance the downtown experience. Very cool to see projections, but would love to see that taken a step further.
@handcraftcreative1
@handcraftcreative1 3 года назад
It's a tough go for sure. Ghost signs inherently require the aging process and that's how you get the interesting layers of peeling. So many of them are painted one over another so picking the right ones to restore would be challenging. It would be awesome if more signs were painted on blank walls in the traditional form to allow them to become their own 'ghost signs'! Wouldn't that be something! Or require new businesses to have painted signs (or create an incentive for them to do so). One can dream!

I just found your video. As a former (and homesick) Winnipeger, I really enjoyed seeing what the you did with the Exchange and regret that I missed it. Is there any plan do to something similar in the future (post-COVID of course)? If so, please advertise it way in advance so that I can time one of my trips home to see it. Well done and well done on keeping the sign making tradition alive!
