Converting the step pulley drive system on my rong fu RF-30 mill to something a little better. I did this primarily to gain extra height over the table but it also improves the drive system by increasing torque to the spindle because there is more belt to pulley contact with the bigger part.

Holy crap mate, your mill has awesome features. I’d like to see that lift mechanism and see a bit more of this pulley mod to understand how it works

I worked in the Coal Mining industry many many years ago (49 yrs ago just worked that out and it makes me feel even older, lol), and as an Engineer Apprentice I was always taught that a Sheave was used for guiding Steel Ropes and Pulleys were the domain of Belts. this was in the UK, so I don't know if the Pond between us makes a difference or not ..... Great project btw.

Cool project, I own a jet 16 inch vertical mill, every time I want to change speeds have to get a ladder and full around with the belts and pulleys. I am familiar with the viable frequency speed control, and the three phase motor. I love your modification so much I think I'm going to order all the necessary parts to convert my mill. Some of the mods I really did like attaching the rack gear to the post. Had to make my own locking bolts for the head, only because the ones that came with the mill were really bad design. Thanks again for the video.

Good job going with a inch pound torque wrench. A bigger one isn't very accurate real close to the bottom of it's scale. I got one when I had a whole mess of 1/4"-20 bolts I had to torque evenly on my bead lock wheels. Your video popped up in my feed, now I have to go watch more of your conversion videos.

Interesting project - you sure gained some useful height. VFD rocks! :) Wish I had that option.

Real nice work. A remote switch for the z height drill would be the cats bark.

If you're using a corded drill, lock the trigger in and use a momentary foot switch from Harbor Freight. I have an old Craftsman 1/2", single speed, reversible that would work for that.

Good work, how do you change speeds ? Is there a variable speed drive for the motor ?Is there a vid for that ? Also how do you rate the vertical control bar, was it worth the effort ? Lots of questions I know. Its because I have the same mill and am thinking of doing some of the things you have. PS Have you seen Stefan Gotteswinter s power feed ? Nice

How do you adjust belt tension now the idler pulley has been removed? Enjoying all your videos. I have the smaller RF25, but the mods can be adapted. I use a laser pointer to maintain position which works ok so still debating about the column clamps, but I do have a 2.5 inch stainless bar which I am itching to use! Thanks Mitch

The new pulley is attached to the motor so there isn't any change from the stock tensioner.

Are you going to have enough torque to run face mills? Unless you have installed a larger motor or run only small cutters I think you are going to want more torque.

+MrJohnnaz 2HP on a mill that size is plenty, I don't typically run a face mill but it has plenty of torque down low from the torque boost.

i have this machine, i hate it (the bigger of the two actually). Wish I had a small knee mill instead so i don't use the Z position.

They have small knee mills like 600lbs, the RF45 is like 400

@@ReignOterror the best way that I found to keep the quill on center is to use a hard stop, similar to what people use for repetitive work in the vice. If I need to raise the head I raise the quill then butt it against my stop. Next I raise the head as needed then lower the quill and snug it. Then pull it to the stop and tighten the head. To lower the head just do the opposite. It seems to do better if you have trammed your head in by shiming under the column bolts if needed but some mill drills are cast in one peace.
