And do not forget those 3 consecutive base hits by Carter, Mitchell and Knight which set the table for that inning. 86 mets never gave up !! They glided through the regular season with 108 wins. However they met a great challenge by the Astros. They came from behind in game 6 of the NLCS to beat the Astros knowing that if they didnt they would be confronted by Mike Scott the next day. Boston was tough but the Mets had the psychological edge over them. 86 Mets...A GREAT TEAM !!!!!

I remember watching this game, not caring as I never did if the Dodgers werent in there. Didn’t know that Boston had not won since 1918, and when I was watching, I was happy to have tuned in to see a historic moment, Boston winning in over 70 years. I recall thinking the game was surely over and in fact I recall Scully announcing the end of game credits as they all do when the games going to end soon and in fact I recall they showed a message in the jumbo-trim thanking the Mets fans for their support that year. I was watching and thinking holy crap, this kind of collapse doesn’t happen…ever! When the ball passed Mookies legs and the tie run scored, I was enthralled. How could this be happening. THEN the incredible ball going in between Buckners legs! Holy! That was incredible. I was shocked and thrilled at the same time and I loved it all! It was up to that moment in my life the most exciting game I’d seen in baseball! Great call Scully!

This never gets old - love it! I just met Mookie Wilson at the Syracuse Mets opening day game yesterday. I'm an Army public affairs officer and our color guard represented the Army's 10th Mountain Division during the national anthem. It was awesome to see him, shake his hand, talk to him, and of course get a photo of the two of us together. He was really nice, and poised. He threw the ceremonial opening day pitch.

I'm 56 years old and this is the greatest sports moment of my life. I'll never forget I was watching the game with 10 other people. Me & one other Mets fan, 9 Red Sox fans. And oh were they ever giving us crap. Knight was down to 2 strikes. Mookie was down to 2 strikes. And then suddenly...METS WIN! Absolutely amazin'!!

I was 9 years old living in the suburbs of Houston in 86 and the Astros were my life. I was addicted to baseball cards, playing baseball and watching my beloved Astros, that season was super special to me. The Mets, Astros NLCS was one the best series ever and game 6 is still my favorite baseball game of all time. So when the Mets beat my Astros it broke my heart.

But recently I have been watching the old 86 World Series and NLCS games and the Mets have been growing on me. I have been reading books about them too. If my Astros were going to lose I am glad it was to the Mets cause they were some BAD ASS mother Fckers.

@@c.a.g.3130 Nah, Buckner even though he's a *POS* would have beat Pearl Jam to first base. Besides, even if POS didn't make that play it would have kept Knight from scoring from second

@@c.a.g.3130 Stanley at that point was out of the play. Mookie probably still makes it to first base even if Buckner makes the play. It would have been close though.

Yeah, but the run wouldn’t have scored. Knight was at second so there’s no way he would’ve come all the way around the score…at minimum the Red Sox could’ve gotten the next hitter out and survived into the 11th.

I believe I read once (I was living in Boston in the fall of '86) that Mrs. Stanley and Mrs. Gedman had a rather animated disagreement as to whether it was a wild pitch or passed ball. In any case, you are right. There was ZERO chance the Red Sox would come back after the Mets tied the game just as there was ZERO chance they would win the next game.

Buckner’s error was not what finished the Sox. The wild pitch tied the game, without it, Ray Knight would have not scored on the error. And they still lost the next game as well.

I timed by stop watch (multi runs) Mookies run to first. it was 3.8 seconds. From the position of Buckner: Buckner probably did not have enough time to get to first for the out as he had (1) bad and (2) slow legs as well as some of his momentum (3) was not forward. However I must note that the 3.8 second count for Mookie is misleading since Mookie slows a bit ( to make a turn to second ) before coming to bag as he sees Buckner missing the ground ball. In other words if Buckner makes the play then Mookie would have been ( via a linear / straight run) at first base probably around the 3.4 to 3.6 second mark instead of the 3.8 sec. mark. . Buckner would be out of the play by then. Some experts say Mookie had a 90 % chance in beating out the play. This is a conservative estimate. In any event the game would still be tied with Knight ( the potential winning run ) at 3rd base and H. johnson coming to bat. All in all a very great at Bat by Mookie who fouled off 6 pitches and hung in there for a game tying wild pitch giving him a chance to hit that game winning ground ball.!!

What's funny about this is when there were 2 out and no on, they started doing the wrap-up thank you scripts for those who participated in the broadcast of the World Series like it was over and the last batter was only a formality.

And he didn't throw game tying wild pitch. Buck was amazing an amazing player and an even better Ambassador of the game. He never deserved any of the BS he got after this series. This loss was on MacNamara and the moves he made to help Boston lose.

Knight was the hero, but why on Earth did he slow down between second and third and look back as Mookie’s ball skipped towards | Buckner, as if it was a pop-up and he wasn’t sure whether to go? There were two outs, it was on the ground. I never saw that before, never saw that angle.

*WOW* All these years and I never saw that angle! Even if it was a pop up, THERE WERE TWO OUTS ALREADY!!! It didn't matter whether it was a pop-up or grounder at that point. Why didn't he just run full steam towards third base once Mookie's bat made contact with the ball? At that point it would have been the third base coach's job to send Knight home or not. If not, then Knight would just stop at third. If so, he would continue at full speed towards home plate. Definitely a brain fart on Knight's part. BUT, of course, it didn't matter, as the Mets won anyway. But, if Knight had been caught because of his looking, then the media and baseball analysts would no doubt have made a very big deal of it for decades to come, especially if the Mets would have lost that game and the series as a result.

I'm pretty sure he slowed cause he was checking to see if Buckner had the ball...cause even if Buckner gets the ball and doesn't get mookie at first he could still the throw out knight at home plate. That is my theory.
