@Allen Daniel I’m a Mets fan, and will always appreciate this play as the moment the Mets got the momentum of the series back for good, but I will always feel sorry for Bill Buckner. I can’t imagine what it feels like

I'm a long time Mets fan, and I've always felt that Buckner wasn't the goat of the game. The real monkey wrench for the Bosox was Bob Stanley who's wild pitch set up the play. Frankly, even if Buckner fields the ball, I don't think it would've ended the inning. Mookie had good speed and I think he would've made it to first. I doubt Knight would score. But it would have Knight at third with HoJo coming to bat. And Stanley still on the mound.

@@55metsfan That wasn't on Stanley, though. It was Gedman the catcher who missed the pitch. Look at where it came in at 7:05, just inside the umpire's right knee. It missed the zone, but it wasn't wild.

I was there that night, too. Your perception of how tickets were distributed is flawed. The gentleman who was there as a kid with his father is telling the truth. What he omitted, and may not have known, is that his father, as a season ticket, or package plan holder, had the option to buy post season tickets before the remainder were released to the public. Full season ticket holders could buy tickets for all the home games, a maximum of 7, which, in this case, all got played. Package plan holders, like me, could buy half the games. In my case, I got game 4 of the NLCS, and games 2 and 6 of the World Series. What you didn't get was the seats you had in the regular season. My regular season seats had been in the Mezzanine, between home and first. My post season seats were in the Upper Deck out in Right Field, just on the foul side of the foul pole. I got a good close look at the skydiver as he made his approach to landing. So, the point of the story is that the gentleman is telling the truth on how his father got him into game 6.

I never knew that this wasn't the decisive game in the series, I had always thought this was game 7 based on how people talk about it. It's ridiculous that Buckner's blunder is treated this way when it was far from the only one.

You're exactly right, there was no way Billy Buck could've beaten Wilson to the bag! Buckner did not cost Boston this game or the series. There was plenty of blame to go around! Unfortunately, Mr. Buckner passed away this morning. I'm so very sad, for he was my all time favorite player. Thanks for the memories, Mr. Buckner!

Ortmeyer41 the real key point was the game was already tied by then. The real goat, honestly, is Schiraldi, though some could argue that a closer shouldn't be asked to pitch three innings in the first place. Incidentally, Clemens and McNamara tell opposite stories, Clemens claiming he was pulled against his wishes in the 8th, while McNamara said his pitcher told him he was finished, as he had thrown over 140 pitches.

Buckner was the one on the Dodgers in the 1974 WS against the Athletics who, when down three games to one, said only two players on Oakland could even make the Dodgers team. Oakland won the next day. Haven't been a Buckner fan since.

howie9751 he may not have been wrong though. That '74 A's team had the worst regular season record of any World Series winner to date (a record later taken off their hands by the '87 Twins and then the '06 Cardinals.). 4 of the 5 games in that series ended with 3-2 final scores, so games like that can be fluky.

I think the '88 Series was the last one that Scully did for NBC, being that ABC and NBC rotated coverage every other year. Then CBS took over the coverage in '90 with Jack Buck and later Sean McDonough.

@Rich Affinito 2004 and that was more or less and outlier however, plus the Red Sox bull pen in 1986 had tons of problems outside of Schiraldi before he starts choking in Game 6 and later 7.

It's amazing how long their fanbase have had to stretch out these title memories for now. Of course, I'm a Knicks fan. All their championship videos are old and grainy. This incident actually got some laws changed in Florida. This accident happened at dark. The pier/dock had no lights, and was a good distance out on the water. While there was no question Crews was drunk, if the dock had lights, this may never have happened! Now all docks that are a certain length out on the water have to have lights!

Id love to see a rewinder on the 1980s US-USSR hockey game, but I dont think that game was symbolized by a single moment in the game, but rather by Al Michaels' legendary "Do you believe in Miracles?! YES!!!" call (which holy smokes I cant believe he's still broadcasting, what a legend). I feel the 72 Summit goal by Paul Henderson was more of a fantastic sports moment in terms of actual hockey goals.
