WT - Beginner's Guide Part 3 - Attacking Energy Maneuvers

The previous video introduced energy fighting, and in this one I take it further showing you the most efficient way to climb, then some basic energy maneuvers, and finally a range of energy-based tactics to use in attacking enemy planes including Boom and Zoom, Rope a Dope and a few others of my own devising.
In retrospect I should have spent more time discussing high & low yoyos, plus the benefits of avoiding head-ons especially when you have an altitude advantage.
If you'd like to support me in my creative endeavors, you can do so at / long5hot

1. You're very professional in your videos. 2. You give very clear descriptions and provide good examples. 3. Now that I've watched all of these videos, I don't have any more excuses. Thanks. lol

I am seeing improvement, but I still haven't watched all the videos. I enjoy Lon5hot's videos for the same reasons you listed above. No silliness or vulgarity, just good professional presentation. (I am not a prude, vulgarity doesn't bother me, but I will often watch on breaks at work, and the vulgarity is a no-no at work)

Very good video, pulling off a Rope a Drop and getting a kill is very satisfying. I went from 3 - 4 kills a match and losing all my planes, to 6 sometimes 10 and not even losing one plane.

Also 9:07 and generally the section on BnZ (ok, I haven't watched past 9:07 yet) - in AB the pure BnZ attack can be very dangerous, especially if you are attacking someone in a swarm, because your target (if they survive) or his friends can pull their nose up sharply and start firing at you while you are still in range. More effective is the 'boom and extend' attack, where you dive, fire, and fly away with minimal turning and with all that speed from your dive in level flight or a shallow dive - only when you are far enough away do you start to slow down and climb again. It takes longer to repeat than pure BnZ since your climbs are made with less starting speed, etc., but its also safer.
@long5hot
@long5hot 10 лет назад
Yes I often boom and extend in AB as well. Getting fast separation from enemies is more important than getting height quickly, unless you're trolling for Rope a Dope opportunities - I should have pointed that out.

These look very effective and I like knowing how/why they work. One of the best videos I've seen on tactics. The main question I still have after watching that would limit my ability to use these effectively is how do you know when to break and begin your attack? What do you look for to know that they are stalling or over-committed?
@long5hot
@long5hot 9 лет назад
Joseph Strouth A large part of it is practice & experience, and its hard to substitute for that as it will give you a feel for when a plane is likely to be stalling/struggling based on their behaviour in the air & how long and hard they've been climbing. I do zoom in to look for condensation trails off the wingtips, also to see if the lead indicator dips indicating the nose has dropped which may be due to stall. I strongly recommend practicing these tactics with the mission editor available in test flight mode. You can choose the AI plane type & number of enemies to face, knowing that they'll target you in preference, and set up stall-trap attacks again & again. It'll also help you get familiar with the capabilities of the plane you're flying, and how to aim with it as well.
@JosephStrouth

I am practicing the climbing spiral, but I'm not there yet. You are talking a lot about the "rudder" key, but what key is that? I have now the "roll", "pitch" and "yaw" axis bind to QWEAS and D. But none of these keys make my plane turn left or right. Also, can you post step by step which keys to use to perform a good climbing spiral? I understand the idea, just not how to do it.
@long5hot
@long5hot 9 лет назад
Walter Jans Rudder is yaw, elevators are pitch, ailerons are roll. Climbing spiral is up pitch, a rudder key (I usually spiral left for some reason) and tapping the opposite roll key as needed to stop the plane tipping over in the turn. For me, that's S for up elevator, Q for left rudder, D for right aileron. So S & Q held, D tapped as needed. Hope that helps :)

Video is great but I am having a Controls issue when I try the hammerhead while looking backwards (holding C down). As soon as I let go of the rudder key, the auto pilot undoes my hammer head. I don't see that happening in the video. I have see this Controls thing before. It seems that using the elevator keys in look-around mode will shut off the autopilot but you have to use the elevator keys "enough" and it is not clear how much is a enough. Is there a way to stop autopilot from undoing "rudder only" maneuvers?

Using these attacks in tier 4 russians seems to work very well for survivability in arcade, but so far I haven't been able to out-score my traditional dogfighting tactics.
@long5hot
@long5hot 9 лет назад
Survivability is indeed what its all about. You may not get kills as quickly as you can with a more direct "dogfighting" approach, as energy fighting takes more time to position your plane & setup each kill. With practice though you can get a ton of kills ... and regularly survive without losing a plane.

Great video guides. I'm really trying to fly like this but when I look around with the mouse, whilst pressing a key command, my plane just follows the mouse, which seems to overrule my commands, I'm using mouse aim and am quite new to the game. Am I using the wrong mode or something?? I'm all over the place lol.

Will these tactics work in RB? Won't diving at high speeds tear the wings off? Secondly, wouldn't climbing like that after a high speed dive exert a lot of G forces, causing a blackout?
@long5hot
@long5hot 8 лет назад
On many planes it would tear the wings off, there's a few that'd survive it though - bear in mind that this video was made for Arcade not RB. Also its not the climb that'd cause a blackout, its the tightness of the turn out of the dive & into the climb. If that's gradual enough, there'd be no blackout.
@Aaam1rK
@Aaam1rK 8 лет назад
Right, thanks. I tried out some of the maneuvers in arcade to good effect. Was a whole different story in RB though. :D Boom & zoom from up high causes the plane to pick up so much speed that the control surfaces become sluggish and I almost always hit the ground. :P
@halafradrimx
@halafradrimx 9 лет назад
Question : the japanese planes, up to tier 3, had dogfighting in it, the A6M series. But once you hit tier 4, you have those new planes, which are very alike the FW 190 series of energy fighting. So, are they energy fighters or dogfighters? I can't really tell.
@long5hot
@long5hot 9 лет назад
Well, every plane can use energy fighting techniques, even biplanes. Not all are interceptors though - planes intended for high speed passes with no dogfighting whatsoever, which is what the FW190s are. The Ki-84s can be used that way, though in my vid on the Ki-84 ko I used some lower speed energy fighting that could be described as "dogfighting" though I guess it depends what your definition of that is. The J2M3 is definitely an interceptor.
@halafradrimx
@halafradrimx 9 лет назад
novocas7rian Thanks! But what about the N1K2 series? These are real oddballs, it's like they can't do nothing well at some area.
@long5hot
@long5hot 9 лет назад
halafradrimx Bear in mind that I've hardly flown them at all so I'm not really qualified to comment, but they strike me as being bigger fatter Zeroes. As I said though, I'll need to fly them a lot more in order to know how best to use them.
@halafradrimx
@halafradrimx 9 лет назад
novocas7rian Well, they definitely can't dogfight, so they are nothing like the zeroes. It really reminds me of the Ki-61 series. Planes underperforming in both speed and turning.
@yongli8276
@yongli8276 7 лет назад
Does these tactic work in realistic? And also If a fighter with greater climb rate will it still catch you in arcade but lesser energy?
@long5hot
@long5hot 7 лет назад
For your first question, most of them will work however in realistic you have to be very careful about pulling hard maneuvers, as they bleed a lot more speed than in Arcade plus they can create g-forces capable of ripping the wings off your plane. Also in RB you can't use flaps at high speed as you can in Arcade. Your 2nd question - if you extend away from such an opponent rather than trying to out-climb them, they shouldn't be able to catch you. Eventually given enough time they might be able to climb above you and gain an energy advantage, but only if you let them. The key is keeping your speed high.

Then I use mediaencoder (free) to convert the rendered video to a format youtube likes & will blur as little as possible. A bit complex, but it gets the job done :)

I don't know if you still read comments but I hope you do. I've started playing WT around 2016 then stopped for a long time because I was focusing on school. Skip forward to 2021 and everyone's in quarantine so I decided to see if I still got it. Much to my dismay, it seems that I was playing like a noob just starting to play the game and I have no idea what I'm doing and I keep losing every game in arcade. That all stopped when I stumbled upon your video series and especially the aiming guide and this one. I can't remember if I've actually got 1st place during my earlier days but I definitely got that few hours ago and I was starstruck. I couldn't believe what was happening. Throughout that game I was constantly in the heat of battle diving and pulling up after every kill and assist and there I was in the sky asserting my dominance upon everybody including my team ;P I also had an epic moment reaching the end of the battle where I was being chased by an enemy fighter who was constantly on my six even after dodging every bit of lead he was sending to my plane. He chased me to the point that he lost his energy right beside me literally 5metres away from my cockpit and I clinched victory as I unleashed my power while uttering "pffft.... amateurs". Truth be said that was one of my biggest moments in my gaming career and for that I thank you a lot. I don't know how to pay my gratitude to you but I hope this might make a smile on your face. Just as a observation, I fly RL planes, the hammerhead maneuver was/is still used today, previous it was called a box canyon turn. Often executed with VFR pilots travelling back country in the mountains.

Simply the best content to date of War Thunder... given that the video is already a few years old... but it is still by far the best to learn how to play this great game. It is very pleasant to assist thanks to the clarity, tranquility and seriousness that denotes excellence and quality of your videos. Thank you very much for your work, it is a shame to see that you haven't do more recently, because surely we would be many who would enjoy them, thank you again and greetings!!

Thank you for the great tutorial video for new players such as myself. Now I just need to learn how to stabilize my plane well aiming with a joystick 🕹 but practice should help with that.

Nope, big nope, just finished getting destroyed by other players...I’m not sure practice will help my aim 😖

Yep with joystick, especially in arcade but in RB as well, you are playing at a massive disadvantage. Unfortunately that's just how the game is :\

Really good videos on how to energy fight, but I still have some questions related to the "climbing pursuit" strategy. I got a little bit confused about "start to turn very very slowly as I climb and gradually increase the speed of my turn"?Does that mean i need to turn slowly when the distance between me and my opponent is not far enough. And also why my opponent will drain their energy faster If they pursue me since it is not a sharp maneuver to point their guns at me? Eager for your response.
@long5hot
@long5hot 4 года назад
The idea of the climbing pursuit is to lure the opponent into thinking they're catching up with you and have a shot at getting guns on you right until the last minute when they're suddenly stalled and you're swooping for the kill. Hence the gradual turn at first - it makes the distance slowly narrow (which the opponent sees) while keeping your speed high (which he doesn't see) and avoiding any tricky maneuvering which might spook him. He might even think you don't see him. He will lose speed because he's climbing the whole time in order to get to you, whereas you're working on maintaining your speed - the turn in order to slowly let him close is a ruse on your part. Then when he's climbing hard, approaching guns range, you use your superior speed to sharpen your climbing turn. He's worked so hard to get in range and he won't give up now, so he burns his last speed as he tries to follow in a steep turning climb, stalls, and you have him. This is just an example of recognising the greed in an opponent and using it against them. If they're sensible & experienced, they won't fall for it & will keep their speed high, maybe trying to attack through low yoyos or perhaps just giving up and diving away. So many Arcade (and RB) players are greedy though. It's also an example of managing your speed versus judging what your opponent's is, and forcing them to perform maneuvers that they don't have the energy for. That kind of judgement only comes with experience and practice.

Btw while I called it a climbing pursuit, I think the correct term is "chandelle".

Mate you are awesome ! I was looking for videos to show my buddy basics for the game and i learned so much : ) it's insane how i own ppl without knowing those maneuvers , preaps cause of my sick aim but when i got to high tire planes i got a bit in a stragle maybe next time i will be more effective cause of you : ) : )

okay so if a BF-109 is best played as a boom and zoom plane, and a spitfire mk 16 is a similar plane but better turn radius, does that mean that a mk 16 is better because it can do the same thing but probably better??? pls

1:19 - wait, WEP in RB will damage engine??? Never saw this happen before. Of course WEP will raise engine temperature and that can indirectly lead to an overheat if you stay at WEP and 100% on some planes, but direct damage from using WEP?
@HUGGIESroxFace
@HUGGIESroxFace 10 лет назад
That's what he's talking about. Using WEP for too long in RB will overheat your engines.
@long5hot

Derek Hughes Yes exactly. You can spam it as much as you like in AB, but use it like that in RB and you'll pay the price.
@Gaalua
@Gaalua 10 лет назад
novocas7rian Actually, on average, you spam way more WEP in RB than in Arcade, especially on cold maps. All it takes is a bit more temperature management.

These suggestions are VERY insightful and helpful, and the Starsky-&-Hutch theme music playing in the background MAKES it. Subscribed. One question though: what type of mouse, trackball, or settings do you use to maintain such perfect situational awareness? Whenever I fumble with my mouse to keep an eye on the other guy, my plane ends up stalling or lawn-darting into a mountain.

Why does the screen get a vignette when you climb? Does the G Force overload do something to your plane?

How do I determine what is a competitive altitude? Normally I fly the XP-50 to hunt bombers for instance, so I know that I must climb _at least_ 5000m, but for fighters, how does one determine that?

Can't thank you enough for this series, Longshot - by far the clearest, most informative, most Practical ones I've seen. Question - I see you (and lots of other WT video-ers) doing maneuvers with an opposing plane behind them but keeping the view on the target. Are you using target view while controlling the plane exclusively with keyboard? Do you mostly use keyboard to control the plane and only mouse for aiming, or? I am thinking I've gotten lazy and use mouse 90% of the time,except for rolling, rudder turn for hammerhead, etc... thanks!
@long5hot
@long5hot 9 лет назад
Yep, mostly using the keyboard to control the plane which leaves the mouse free to look around.
@remenents100
@remenents100 9 лет назад
novocas7rian Are keyboard controls more powerful than mouse? Meaning, if you use keyboard strictly and try to turn in the reverse direction with mouse, which is more "powerful"? I ask because if I am flying with keyboard and looking with mouse and mistakenly let go of the camera button, will my plane suddenly move in a direction I wasnt expecting or will the keyboard hold me where I was?
@long5hot
@long5hot 9 лет назад
Neogenex Firstly, the keyboard will constantly apply the control surface to its maximum extent for as long as you hold it. With the mouse you need to be constantly moving it in order to sustain that level of turn, plus a mouse is incapable of some of the maneuvers a keyboard can do, such as snap rolls and climbing spirals. Secondly, if you're using the keyboard to control the elevators or rudder, you don't need to use the free-look camera key in order to look around with the mouse. When rudder or elevator keys are pressed, mouse-aim is deactivated and you can look around where-ever you want, and will only reactivate when you release the elevator/rudder key. If at this point you've looked around using the C key, the plane will just fly on whatever heading it was when you released the keyboard, and if you release C it will snap back to some other direction which is almost certainly not what you want. If however you've looked around without using the C key, while turning with rudder/elevator, when you release the keyboard and mouse aim reactivates it will make the plane fly towards where-ever your mouse is on the screen. Hence while turning with the keys you can move the mouse to whatever heading you want the plane to fly when it exits the maneuver, and it'll smoothly transition to this new heading when the keyboard's released. If that doesn't make sense, its hard to explain this stuff in words, I demonstrate it in the second half of the first video in this series.
