A great man. Becoming President would have ruined his passion and idealism. I love his quote about how we should treat people in the shadows of life.

He damn near went all the way. But Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon were politically higher up than him.

Yeah unfortunately, one had more money, the other was more greedy and the last one was much more of a bull-shitter...

@@irocitZ The assassinations of both Kennedys enabled Humphrey's entry on to both the 64 and 68 tickets. What Johnson might have done is stand down in November, 1967 on the calculation that he was over it with Vietnam and the rioting, he cannot get the consensus, hi has completed not one official Term, but the equivalent in time of one Term, and have his man Humphrey go into the 68 election in a position of incumbency to circumvent a foreseeable Kennedy tilt. But it is indeterminate as to whether those who voted for Wallace in 1968 would otherwise have voted for Humphrey.

@@jonglewongle3438 what's impressive about Humphrey is he almost won in 68 even though he could not openly come out against the war therefore going against Johnson, about one month or so before election day Humphrey could finally speak out against Vietnam. It definitely got him more votes, too little too late. Humphrey should have won in 68, something happened with Nixon as well that hurt Humphreys chances but I can't recall right now.
