In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question on where these fine folks went, how they got there and where you can find 'em now.
This time out we take a look at the career of the legendary Sean Connery!

Yeah I always thought that showed an amazing lack of imagination on his part. I mean I can understand not being into The Lord Of The Rings...but not understanding it!? All he had to do to play Gandalf was what he had been doing for most of the 80s and 90s...its a father figure role...its Ramirez in Highlander, William of Baskerville, Indy's Dad, Malone in The Untouchables, Ramius in The Hunt For Red October. Ok perhaps he was sick of these kinds of roles...that's fair enough! Too bad...his loss since Ian McKellan was amazing.

He then regretted that decision when it became the phenomenon that it did, so when "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" came along he took it, even though he still didn't get it, because he didn't want to miss another "MATRIX". Unfortunately LEAGUE turned out being utter garbage and a bomb, and I think Sir Sean just got frustrated at that point and gave up.

@ Ah, okay. Waves from S. Gyle! Matthew's Chinese was a lifesaver during lockdown when all the mainstream supermarkets were running out a couple of months back. :) I walk along the canal a lot. Neil Connery still lives in Edinburgh. He goes to some of the pubs in Corstorphine - or did when they were open. I don't remember much of the old Fountainbridge TBH, because I moved here in the nineties. I think McEwans was still going. I think he'd barely recognise it with all the overpriced flats.

@ It was better early on I suppose. A mate of mine needed to get a big load of shopping in just before lockdown and the main supermarkets (like Tesco Corstorphine) were getting empty shelves. I got a tip off the Chinese places were well stocked. There is some weird & exotic stuff in there, right enough, but I got flour, and some veg etc out of it. When Tesco/Sainsbury's/Scotmid were out of pasta I just bought tonnes of their noodles. The big supermarkets are back but I don't rec Tesco Cors. just now. Was in a couple of days ago and some guy was wandering around coughing. I'm told the Asda at Chesser got pretty bad at a couple of points but I've not been in there for a year! But at least I never ran out of bog roll. 😄

Watching it now after the passing of Connery. The chilling feeling when you say 'you can't go on doing things until you die' and then showing a clip of SNL spoofing Alex Trebec who passed away a few days ago. Wow, that's some prescience. Great video!

He got old, scripts started to confuse him and he was no longer going to be offered romantic leading roles, because you know, old He rejected the role of Morpheous because the concept of the matrix made no sense too him, he said once a long time ago in a hollywood far far away, he retired because he wasn't going to be the romantic lead in movies any more. What is tragic.. he made some damn fine movies in the 90s and the league of extraordinary gentlemen ended up being his last movie which was complete and total trash. Finding forrester was one of his last movies and that too me is a far better movie for him to go out on. It is unfortunate.

As iconic as he is/was I think he would have been horrible for both Morpheus and Gandalf. Those roles needed actors who could disappear into the character, not overshadow them with their star power. Though, seeing Sean Connery doing King Fu or fighting the Balrog would have been pretty kewl =)
