John Carpenter’s The Thing didn’t go over well when it was released in 1982. Ignored by movie-goers, it was a box office failure. Reviled by critics, it even saw Carpenter labeled a pornographer of violence by some reviewers. It was such a disappointment for the studio they took another project away from Carpenter as punishment. But it gradually found its audience, building up a cult following. And soon, a legion of fans and critics alike began calling it one of the greatest horror movies ever made. It didn’t take long for THE THING to go from being known as reprehensible trash to being considered an all-time classic. There are horror movies (most are lame) and then there are sci-fi horror movies (like The Thing). When it comes to Sci-Fi horror, Alien is in a league of its own.

Amazing movies yes.....Still hold up....LMFAO NO.....They "hold up" generally to the people who constantly pretend that CG so awful..Practical effects can be just as if not more jarring as bad CG...Its not any different with practical when a person clearly turns into a mannequin or when a head clearly turns into a mold than when someone turns into CG. With CG is that you can spend unlimited time tweaking the visual, changing the visual as opposed to practical costing you days of shooting because you didn't get the scene or something when wrong and, now you have to have the entire scene reset including cleaning everything, redressing everything having to make sure the actor looks exactly as they did before the scene losing shooting time

They have fantastic well written stories, character acting and soundtracks/music scores. The Thing for example is a masterpiece in horror tension and atmosphere rarely seen in the horror movies of today :-)

@Luther Heggs CGI is overrated. Nothing compares to hand crafted practical effects, animatronics and meticulous stop motion animation all captured on film.

Sam I agree. To say this movie is 41 years old it still looks good and better than the CGI used in the prequel in 2011. Practical effects can look better than CGI in certain movies. In terminator dark fate the cars used in the chase sequences was more or less CGI and it might be quicker and easier for them shooting but a real vehicles like what they used in terminator 2 looks alot better.

Honestly a film that goes above and beyond to use authentic FX really draws me in. The Thing is insanely horrific and all around one of the peak titles for the horror genre. This, and The Return of the Living Dead are two of my top favorite titles.

When I went to see it, the movie theaters were 1/2 empty ! There was so many good movies that year, The Thing just got smothered. It was vile, like the Exorcist. It's shock value was too much for most people. I remember that clearly.

For the best horror movie ever, I struggle to separate the following four films from each other: The Thing, Alien, The Exorcist and Halloween. I watch all four on a regular basis and still can’t pick one as the best. For me, some distant runner-ups are The Shining, Lost Boys, The Haunting (b/w), The Descent, The Changeling, Resident Evil 1/2/3, Ginger Snaps, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Exorcist 3 (Legion), The Mist (with the most fucked up ending of any movie ever).

My great grandmother was alive when the book was written. She didn't read it until the 1940s. She watched the older movie, and eventually watched the 1982 version from Carpenter. She loved it and she always wanted to know why the movie got a lot hate when released. Must have been cool to be alive for the books writing to watch it assimilate into what it became.

I saw this in the summer of 82 somewhere in North Carolina, in an empty theatre having pushed passed the still massive que for ET. Anyway, the Thing blew my tiny teen mind… and it still does! What a brilliant movie. Great to see it getting the love it deserves :)

One of, if not my favorite films of all time. It's such a classic and everything about it is perfect. The prequel isnt bad but not the same beast as this film. The short story by Peter Watts called "the Things" is a great companion peice to this film. "It happens all the time, Childs. Thier falling out the sky like flies"

The prequel is just a beat by beat remake except the alien goes out of its way to expose itself constantly it’s completely unecesary and ranks with solo among half assed 40 years too late prequels.

Would love to see it with the original practical effects built for the film before the studio made them cover it all up with CGI and change the ending of the film.

I've heard a reboot is on the way that will be more along the lines of the original novel.

It was simply too much for most people. The same would be true today. This is a cult movie, not a spooky little mainstream flick like, say, “It.” Also (and this may or not be related), “E.T.” was released basically the same month, and the general public obviously preferred the cute, kid-friendly Spielberg alien over Carpenter’s Lovecraftian phantasmagoria

The first movie of its type with an all male ensemble and the the first Sci-Fi horror where it was not a man in a suit...even the great original Alien movie is a guy in a suit. Truly a masterpiece with mind bending special effects that stand up even today.

I first watched The Thing in 1988. I was in eighth grade at the time, and my best friend was over with me for the screening. When the head spouted legs and crawled away, my friend shouted, "You got to be kidding me?!?" Seconds later, one of the characters made the same remark, and we both collapsed with laughter. Definitely one of my favourite films of all time.

The commentary is absolutely amazing! There’s no long pauses, there are a lot of fun stories about production, behind the scenes stories, there’s genuine interest from both Carpenter and Russell, it makes the movie better

When I saw the 2011 prequel I was one of only about eight people in the theater, but when ended and Ennio Morricone's haunting them started all of us gathered in front of the screen and had an impromptu discussion. It was friendly, fun, and there was a lot of laughter. That wouldn't have been possible without the 1982 original classic.

Hard to believe it's been 40 years since the first time I saw this movie and was completely blown away by it. I was 12 years old and had never even heard of The Thing. We were at a family gathering at my uncle's house. Myself, my brother and sister (they were 14 & 15). Mom, Dad, cousins, aunt and uncle. Without a single hint or warning what we were getting into my uncle pulled out a videotape and said "Let's watch a movie", and the rest is history. What a ride.

Been a movie fan for a long time. This has been one of my absolute favorites for years. A testament to the times when a studio should just give the director / producer the money and let the artist make the movie.. That’s where the studios go wrong. You can’t rely on test audiences to gauge long term success. You have to tell a great story first. The ending is masterful. This is great storytelling.

The Thing is my favorite horror movie of all time. I saw it as a kid in the mid 80s when it came to VHS and terrified me like nothing else had. Poltergeist was also really scary to me as a kid, and Alien as well. But this movie made me feel like my skin was crawling for days.

"The Thing" is the reason why I am interested in seeing the other Kurt Russel and John Carpenter movies. Thankfully, many of his movies were remastered around 2017. I'm planning on getting them. Also, the special edition blu ray. I truly found the creatures terrifying and disturbing the first time I saw it. That was in 2019 or something, so it shows how well the practical effects held up. Personally, I struggle to rank movies or games, but this movie is definitely one of my favourites. I can't imagine how people would have reacted in 1982. Story that follows after 7:25 You can't be serious? Imagine that.

the game was awful......Im sorry that some people like it and think of it as a sequel but its awful in almost every way....Its interesting ideas sort of hindered by god awful gameplay, enemies, bosses, etc, its not a good game and its not just because of the "time it came out".....Its 4hrs of switch flipping each time gaining more and more switches that need to be flipped.

I saw it opening day when I was 13. My friends and I were the only ones in the theater. Our day may shed some light as to why it flopped. We spent the whole day watching movies. The first film we saw was Blade Runner (which opened the same day and was packed) then we jumped screens to watch Star Trek II for my third time (it had come out a few weeks earlier and was gaining steam as weeks went by) then we went to another theater and bought a ticket for Megaforce during that film we started to sneak into the theater one at a time. We were worried an usher might come and throw us out as we were the only ones in there. The problem with The Thing was the marketing wasn’t great and there was a lot of competition beside the films I mention there was also Conan The Barbarian, Poltergeist, E.T., Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid (kind of forgotten today but Steve Martin was still huge at the time). Critics didn’t kill it there was just lots of competition and as much as I love the film it’s not really summer fare. I feel it would’ve fared better had it gotten a fall release especially since there was a panic in the media because of poisoning of Tylenol and Halloween was basically cancelled the year. That being said it’s now stood the test of time.

@@MikeD974 now with Blade Runner people were upset in the theater. When it was over people just quietly left. There was a lot of publicity for it and I think with Harrison Ford people were expecting something more action oriented. Raiders was still playing in some theaters. After the first 10 minutes all the oooh’s and aaah’s stopped people were like “is something going to happen.” It didn’t resonate with me until it came out on VHS the following year.

A lot of people struggle to say what there number one definitive favourite movie is and I would happily put this as my number one. Because it’s effects are timeless, the acting is portrayed realistically, the music builds tension and dread. The cinematography is beautifully done, the tension is palpitating and the premise is unique. That’s why I can put it as my number one because it has so many pros and no cons making it a masterpiece.

I was with an early video retail/rental company during the time of The Thing's release, and we had an okay rental number on the movie. When it was released to theaters in the Summer of 82, they had a scary midnight premiere in Houston. We all watched the movie and watched it a million times on video, obviously loving it. We knew then what a great movie The Thing was. The rest of the world needed thirty years to catch up. This prompted 2011's prequel, which is more CGI than practical effects and the viewing public was very vocal about this. But in truth, it is not a bad movie. They added some Americans including a female protagonist (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and the story is pretty good, ending with the beginning of the helicopter-dog chase that begins Carpenter's classic The Thing.

I was too young to watch this movie in theaters so I waited for it to be on cable. Finally shows on HBO and I’m sitting in a dark living room with my sister. I was so scared that my teeth were chattering and she says to me “what is wrong with you, it’s just a movie” and then I was able to calm down. Favorite movie ever!

One of the better remakes, one of the best later Carpenter movies,...(Starman is great to. Watch that with your girl and if neither one of you are in tears at the "Deer on the hood scene" your not human, your a pod person..lol)...anyway the unique thing about this movie is the jaw dropping acting of that husky. You believe that this animal is truly just a shell with something malevolent inside. The desperation and fright in its eyes when in fear of first being shot. That intense concerned stare at the returning helicopter, and that careful slow descent as it lays down in the dog pen. I have never seen any other film animal perform like it was intelligently aware of what the filmmakers needed for him to emote....It makes me believe that he was at the table for first script reading LOL..Cause it sure seems like it in its performance.

Yeah, Starman is a wonderful romantic sci-fi classic with an incredible music score I always recommend to people :-)

I was 4 when my Mom brought me with her, to watch the Thing. As I cowered by the folding chair, I peeked through my fingers, and watched. I couldn't help it. I was frightened yet mesmerized. Although I didn't want to eat spaghetti for weeks, I saw my 1st horror movie and loved it.

What happened to this film and John Carpenter when it was initially released was just criminal; even if the gore and oppressive atmosphere was too much for some people, you still have to respect the effort, talent and technical mastery on display

I love watching these videos not only for the content in them but also for the ways some words get pronounced. I never know what word it'll be but there is usually 1 or 2 that get pronounced strangely 😂 First time I've ever heard someone pronounce MacReady as "MacReddy."

One of my all time favourites. I was 10 when this came out and I have vague memories of first watching it late at night on UK television and it's one of those films that I buy on every new format when I can. I was fortunate enough to get to see it on the big screen for the first time back in October for its 40th anniversary.

The Thing is one of the few films made the right way by the right people at the right time and cannot be replicated BECAUSE of advancement of technology culture and social issues. The Thing, Jaws and Piranha are three of those horror movies for me. They can have sequels and prequels and spinoffs, but I can't see them being remade.

One of my favourite films of all time! The SFX still holds up after 40 years (Dog-thing still terrifies me!) and the paranoia is excellent. This should be considered mandatory viewing for anybody interested in the sci fi & horror genres!

I absolutely love this movie from day 1, in 1982 I was 8 and couldn't believe what I was watching and I loved every minute of it!!! I love JC's music scores and the overall music of the movie, it's all just perfect, Rob Bottin blew it out of the park with those practical effects like it was nobodies business. To me JC The Thing is one of thee best si-fi horror movies of all time!!! The Things sound effects are so chilling and was perfect. What I really wanted to know was, how was Blair gonna fly the space ship he built under the shack in the tunnels out of there and was it bc he was part of "the thing" is how he knew how to make a flying saucer? Bc he was infected, so when? As he was building the ship or before he started, did he start it bc he got infected and was now an alien life form and knows how to build space ships?? Or was he building it then got infected?🤷‍♂️ Mac did call him a smart SOB and said he Blair wants to get out of there but I think it was bc he got "thinged" and the "thing" wants to fly back home is what I'm thinking, but the dialog kinda contradicts that theory. 🤔

The ending was perfect and begged for a sequel. The prequel they shot in 2011 was not as bad as some believe. This movie allowed the female lead to escape so she could easily be adapted to the story starting with the rescue team reaching the base.

Remember watching this the first time and absolutely blew my mind. The whole film is perfect, excellent set-up with very clever thinking around the alien. And the effects were stunning.
