WTF Happened to Tim Burton?

Tim Burton is one of the greatest directors of our era. A former animator for Disney, his early shorts, Vincent and Frankenweenie, marked him as one of the most promising up-and-comers in the business. His first film, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, helped turn Paul Reubens’ Pee-Wee Herman into a household name. It would mark his first collaboration with composer Danny Elfman, who would remain one of his most frequent collaborators. His next film, Beetlejuice, was an even bigger hit, but when Burton was chosen to direct Batman and picked the star of Beetlejuice, Michael Keaton, to be his Caped Crusader, people were wary. However, the resulting film became one of the biggest hits of the eighties and changed the superhero film forever, with many still counting Keaton as the definitive Batman.
In the years that followed, Burton’s creativity was in full swing, with him delivering the classic Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns (which ranks as one of the most unusual blockbuster sequels ever), The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood, and so many more. In recent years, Burton has swung between big-budget movies, such as his Dumbo and Dark Shadows remakes, and more personal fare, such as Big Eyes. Most recently, he had one of the biggest hits of his career by directing episodes and producing Netflix’s Addams Family series, Wednesday, which has become one of Netflix’s most-watched shows ever. Yet, all is quiet on the feature film front from Burton, who’s gone on record criticizing Disney and the over-reliance on franchises. As we all eagerly await his next project, we take a look at Burton’s career in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, which is written (with Mathew Plale), edited, produced and narrated by Taylor James Johnson.

Within the Hollywood system this is almost 100% true. The main reason we see needless remakes, retreads and franchises galore is the studios finance "bankable" commodities. The cost in masking a movie is incredibly high so to get financing on an untried new idea is exceedingly difficult - even for name directors like Tim Burton. However, to say Artists don't make movies anymore is patently not true. True, they are few and far between but I you have to look outside of the Hollywood studio system. A24 has quietly for several years made unique, quirky and strange movies that have been some of my favorite in the last few years. The Green Knight and Saint Maud - to name just 2 from last year and both from A24 - are worth the time of anyone interested in true cinema

He’s been around for decades, and is still pumping out hits to newer generations. Wednesday anyone? Might not be to everyone’s taste but no one can deny it’s another hit, added to an already impressive list. And, he’s always done it his way and not compromised his vision. I saw "Edward Scissorhands" on opening night with my friend. We were regulars to the cinema back in the early 90s. High school. About once a week, we'd hit the theaters to see what was new. "Batman" was already a global sensation, and we both liked Tim Burton's previous works. Let's see what this "Scissorhands" thing is going to be all about! The marketing was brilliant, by the way. They didn't reveal HOW touching it would be. It just looked like it was going to be a quirky fish-out-of-water comedy with a sweet little heart of gold. My friend and I thought that it would be neat. We were not ready. The AUDIENCE wasn't ready. You see, normally when a movie finished, the audience would applaud and start leaving. This was before Marvel, so it was usually just me and my friend who were left by the time the closing credits were done. We'd sit there and chat about the movie until the curtain went back down and the house lights went back up. Anyway, you all saw the movie. You know how WONDERFUL it is. I don't know how many of you saw it back in 1990 when nothing like that had been seen before. But, no one in the audience was ready. I mean NO ONE. The closing credits started rolling, and everyone sat frozen. No buzzing of conversation. No shuffling of feet. Just Danny Elfman. The house lights went back on, and still, no one spoke. There was a thick awkward quiet that hung in the air. It took a moment for everyone to start wandering out in silence. My friend and I walked back to her car without saying a word. The snow was gently falling. When we got to the car, we both looked at each other, and realized that our eyes were over-spilling with tears. Immediately, we hugged, and I mean we held each other for a good 30 seconds. Just sobbing. BAWLING our eyes out! We broke our embrace when we realized that a lone man was looking at us as he was making his way across the parking lot. I was happy that my friend and I didn't explode away from each other to show this total stranger that we were just friends. We just kept an arm around each other, and gave him a friendly nod. Without stopping, he called out over to us, "Edward Scissorhands?" The two of us started laughing with new tears streaming down our faces. "Yup," we both managed to reply simultaneously. "Beautiful," was the man's reply. "Night," he said, and vanished off into the night. One of my all time favorite memories attached to one of my all time favorite movies!

Tim Burton created most of the set and character designs for Nightmare Before Christmas, along with developing the story. Henry Selick directed it because, since it was stop motion and would take a lot longer to complete, it started shooting while Burton was shooting and editing Batman Returns and still took another year to finish. But make no mistake, Burton was heavily involved.

It is very much Tim Burton's creation. It's not called Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas for nothing. Tim created and designed the characters, the plot, the book and closely produced the film for Disney's Touchstone Pictures, while he went though hell having to fulfill his directing commitment of Batman 2 [Batman Returns] for Warner Bros which they didn't even appreciate his Batman sequel and complained ["too dark for kids"] anyway.

Funny enough, he turned down the ‘90s script, thinking the story was too stupid, then was originally slated to direct a stop-motion adaptation before the project was dropped in favor of making the CG abomination we got in 2019. So, he’s been called to helm an Addams adaptation at least twice before working on Wednesday, just didn’t pan out until this one.

He’s had an amazing career, he’s made so many amazing original films that are now considered cult classics! Not many can say that in Hollywood. Not one major holiday goes by without at least a couple of his movies still playing on repeat on tv. Halloween, xmas… So many directors now are just one and done! He’s been around for decades, and is still pumping out hits to newer generations. Wednesday anyone? Might not be to everyone’s taste but no one can deny it’s another hit, added to an already impressive list. And, he’s always done it his way and not compromised his vision. All of that is really impressive in this day and age! He has been surprisingly and impressively consistent in my opinion.

Edward Scissorhands was one of the few movies that moved me to tears. How we got from this to Miss Peregrine (which completely butchered the source material) and Dumbo (which just butchered, like, everything) is still beyond me but I'm grateful for Tim Burton's general impact on the pop culture. The man has been the champion for weirdness for decades and that counts for something. Also, Wednesday is actually quite enjoyable and visually very pleasing. P.S. I also liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when I was a kid but I don't claim to have a very distinguished taste so

I think Burton's "Charlie" is much better than the original movie. But what do I know? I was a kid when "Willy Wonka" came out and I thought it was weird. To this day, I feel like Gene Wilder's character was an @ss. But Johnny Depp's Wonka was relatable and was a true protagonist with a character arch that I at least can relate to. Besides, I'm a sucker for movie quotes and in our family we found several that we still toss at each other. "Do these (fill in the blank with some less than desirable action) happen often?" "Increasingly" "Calm down Mike... er Mom. "Mr Wonka knows what he's doing."

The problem about the current Hollywood is that far too many movies are adaptions from already established franchises and have to tie in with prequels and sequels, which severely limits how far a director can move away from the source material. The Marvel movies are a good example for this. There are basically no mid-budget stand-alone movies any more, which is a format that gives directors much more creative freedom.

I actually enjoyed Dumbo… it was that rare remake that decided to do something different with the story instead of just regurgitating the same exact story beats of the original (like all all the other Disney live-action remakes). I appreciated it for that alone. But yes, Burton’s career for me pinnacled with the 1999’s wonderful Sleepy Hollow, so pre-Sleepy Hollow is nothing but classics (except Mars Attacks), and post-Sleep Hollow is… very uneven and doesn’t feel like Burton half the time.

I say that 1971 captures the spirit of the book better while 2005 follows the story of the book better. However, Wonka’s backstory was not needed and likely would not have pleased Dahl to include in there, since he thought the ‘71 version was even focused too much on Wonka (which is ironic, since he doesn’t even show up for the first 2/3rds of the movie).

Burton definitely has an imagination and an unique one at that. Throughout his earlier career his films were the ones that I'd look forward to the most. Where did it go wrong?. Planet Of The Apes was the beginning of the end. Then redeemed by Big Fish. Sadly remaking Wonka and moving back to Disney has hindered his talents. Perhaps you could argue as well that after Batman Returns was a wrong move on the Warner's end by not letting him continue the franchise. I seriously think he wanted to continue Batman and he put a lot of thought into what he wanted to do with it. After '92 you get these films (Some of them good); that just fill like filling in the gaps. His producing only credit films tend to be good. 9 being the one that I favour most. I honestly believe Hollywood doesn't know what to do with Tim Burton. It's as if they say. Make this for us Tim, just don't be extreme about it. They've sucked the life out of a true artist by not letting him do his own projects. Moving to Netflix could be a good move if negotiations are done right. Do Wednesday and if it succeeds. Ed wood and mars attacks were lovely but box office duds. Between 1999 and now Its been hit or miss but still he puts his own very weird yet cheerful sensibilities into his work and has had some really good films. Ed Wood was a prestige movie. I always felt Burton used Nightmare Before Christmas to get it made. Nightmare was a hit for Disney, so Disney agreed to write a check for Ed Wood. And even though it lost money in theaters, it did turn a profit on home video.

*Tim Burton is GREAT, let there be no doubt or room for doubt about that. HOWEVER, he may be a victim of his own success. We (our generation, immature adults that we are), saw his works through the appropriate lens. His projects were pitted against the NORMS of a society that was cookie cutter and paint by numbers. BUT, since we loved it, and brought it to prominence, the KIDS of these new generations were brought up in a Tim Burton FRIENDLY culture. For THAT generation, (which so many pre-millenials have a hard time relating to). Tim Burton wasn't an "outlier", he WAS THE NORM. So now he's stuck not just competing with his past self and that work, he's having to make an IMPACT which competes with his PAST IMPACT, in a world where the rules have changed. If he can crack that nut, and solve that riddle, he'll floor us with a new project. If not, then, that's fine too, after all, art is subjective, and we have no right to dictate to the artist.(even if it means the art will fail.).*

his style is not original, his art is heavily inspired from German expressionism art in filmmaking in the 1920s, a good example from this period is "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (1920), mixed with culture setting and references of mid-to-late 20th century America. he was the boomer that made millennials and later generations into goths.
