Oh no! You should definitely check out Static-X's older material they did with original band leader Wayne Static who unfortunately passed away in 2014. Basically the masked guy you mentioned is named Xer0 and is meant to be some kind of creepy robotic replacement of Wayne (but is actaully Edsel Dope of the band... Dope).

What was cool about that first wave of industrial was the use of the crude samplers 8 or twelve bits, and the use of power tools, like the drill in Thieves by Ministry. Also, don't think digital recording was as ubiquitous and as accessible on a computer as it is now. Seem to remember Scott (or Klayton as he is now known) using ADATs on those early Circle of Dust records and then transferring them to tape but saving the ADAT stuff for the live show And as far as DAWs were concerned Masaki Liu had a crude version of ProTools on and old Apple computer when we were working on the Jesus Freaks EP but it was closer to Audacity in that it was really only useful for editing the two track mixes.

Lets not forget the Atari falcon! 8 tracks! We had a Studer dyaxis and soundscape next to the tape machines, followed by an Otari RADAR, then Protools. I went feelance in 2000 and have been fully dig. eversince.

The availability of affordable drum machines and Tascams is more of what drove the 80s stuff. You could write & demo an album by yourself in an apartment vs trying to bribe some whore of a drummer before getting evicted. But if he's talking NIN and the 90s, it gets more and more accurate. I had the big goofy HR16, the SR16's predecessor. Easier to do industrial on that thing than not, lol. Gave it to a rivethead friend of mine.

I've got all Static-X's shit on my Ipod since the early 00's... They are so crunchingly heavy it's unreal, but with a dance/industrial element. Their samples are hilarious. If you listen with earphones a lot of their electronic stuff shines through. They recorded all their stuff with drum machines, and then added guitar in after. The drummer is just playing along to the electronic beat.

The original lead singer, Wayne Static, passed in 2014. Currently it's Xer0 (Edsel Dope of the band Dope) handling lead vocals. He uses the mask/persona onstage to separate himself as Edsel while playing with Static X. Initially they weren't revealing who Xer0 was, but enough people figured it out based on the vocals that he came forward.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head when you mentioned that the song has a dance club quality to it. When developing the sound for Static-X, Wayne and the band would sample disco tracks and warp the hell out of them to use as samples. That led to the term "Evil Disco" that's been used within the fanbase ever since.

Static-X rocks! And after the death of the lead singer several years ago, I feel that the new Lead Guitar/Vocalist (Edsel Dope) only comes on stage, and appears as Xero to pay respect to Wayne. Him stepping into those shoes without blurring one of the most influential members of the band started. He never appears as himself. I respect that. I recently did a meet and greet with the Band, and Edsel didn't even come out. Just the original members. These guys still put on one hell of a good show. And Edsel Rocks for doing what he does WITH them. It's a good union.

This song was yeah dance like a weird techno bit. I am amazed Edsel plays Dope THEN Static X full sets. I love many of their songs, not all of em, never really love bands myself except the aquabats cause for some reason that band resonated with me and helped me stop thinking self harm thoughts, which is why I stopped listening to Static X, Lillies and remains who dropped a new vid recently , and NIN, bad choice when in a sad mood for me.

You do not get a fair picture of Static-X by listening to this 2024 release. The original singer (Wayne Static) died 10 years ago. Their earlier stuff is way closer to the bands you mentioned. The masked robothead persona thingie they have now is Edsel Dope from the band Dope. Known to most people mainly from the song ”Die MF die” from 2001. It’s pretty good, and I love the spirit of it all but it’s really not representative of Static-X as an industrial metal band. This is something new.

Saw Static-X last night. (2/16/24) Was actually a great show. Majority of the set was off first 2 albums. Was lucky enough to see them back in the day with Wayne, but "Xero" did an honorable job filling his shoes. They had more theatrics than I was expecting, but it fit into the "Evil Disco" vibe. Was a great show to get out some pent up aggression and just have a good time for the night.

Static X has always been one of my absolute favorite bands. They came in with this crazy energy from WDT, and just rocked it across the board. The lead singer passed a few years back and was replaced recently-ish by another ridiculously talented lead who instead of wearing the ego, chose to pay homage with the mask. They have a wildly colorful story, and made a huge impact in the lives of millions during their hay day. When I discovered that the new singer was doing what he was doing, heard the direction they were going, and all that.. I was absolutely stoked. Will always love these guys.b

Dope and Static X did their first tours for their debut albums supporting Fear Factory. The bands became close friends on that tour. When Wayne Static died rather than let Static X simply fizzle out Edsel Dope took over vocals but didn’t want to simply step into Wayne’s spot. So they hide Edsel in a robot mask that looks like terminator Wayne. That is why Dope and Static X always tour together. It is respect for Wayne that Edsel performs in the mask. RIP Wayne I listened to so much Static X back in the day... Although the band sounds good and the singer nails it it's not the same without Wayne They got the tag "Evil Disco Music" when they came out lol ✌️🤘🧐

I just watched Wayne saying that he named it Evil Disco because he didn't know what genre it came under.

No this isn’t really static x man. Just watch them live during 1999 or 2000. Even after that, their sophomore album machine was (some say just as) good aswell. But yeah, not a very good introduction here mate. This is like someone being introduced to Iron Maiden through sinjitsu or whatever that last album was called.

Yeah, unfortunately they not very good lol. Maybe if they'd had time to really mesh, since they obviously had talent... But I don't think Billy and Wayne could've kept it together. Both of them wanted their own musical legacy too much to share.

I come here not for the appraisal of this raucous tribe, although I enjoy your critiques so much, Justin! The little fluffy creature hanging to your left (viewers right) should rightly be called ‘Bonnie’ after the magnificent former AC/DC frontman. Bon Scott, who gave AC/DC the sound they still have now: iconic, masters of their genre. Love love love ❤️ I did consider ‘Wanker’ from ‘One Way Ticket…or ‘Knockers’ from same aforementioned album. These seemed not to give this creature the tangible and ever-present nature it will surely have going forward. Love the channel, the honesty and the point of differences (plural) from the usual RU-vid dross.

Static X was staple when I was growing up, I listened toa lot of industrial metal bands. Their early stuff doesn't really have edm but does have dance and industrial elements. Was a bit of a shock when the og vocalist died. The bassist actually played with Ministry for a while.

Astounding is all I can say. Little different from the rest. Push it is my favourite so far. Black flag, Rollins band and Napalm Death have to be others to have on vinyl

As others have said, you should really give their old material a listen - it's very different, and their original frontman Wayne, who passed away, is just so awesome.

Always surprises me when musicians don't recognise other bands/musicians that are relatively renowned, especially when their respective social circles on tour aren't as far removed compared to those from vastly different genres. Static-X and The Darkness were always very prominently featured on Kerrang TV, too.
