It's probably the idea from his lyrics previously that it's all a chore and unfair and perhaps hopeless. My view only, not his. Maybe he reached the hope a bit.
these alt-right shitheads kill me. if they wanna listen to shit that aligns with their idiotic views then maybe they should stick to ted nugent and meatloaf.
Yes, he doesn't say change the government, reform the government, vote in different government, support positive changes in the government.. he says BRING DOWN THE GOVERNMENT. Though he takes some leftist stances in his speech, this lyric is pure anarchism. Anarchy - no rulers.
One of the best interviews I've heard of Mr Thom Yorke, introduced me to new bands that have changed my perspective on music and really got into the nitty gritty of what goes into making creative music today and this was from 2017 so I'm already a year behind, anyway thanks to all for this, it's spurred me on in my own career in this crazy business.
Could you type what he said? I'm pretty bad at english, which I've been studying for 6months but still. Btw, I wanna hear why you think that's the important part and what he said. thanks good day!
+MINSEONG KOH 'If you're writing something and you mean it, you can't repeat yourself... And you can't... I just... _I couldn't_ - You know? To me, it's just one of those... I go through my life, umm, come what may, doing stuff because I can't _not_ - you know? It's like: well, this is my instinct, is to go here and that's it. I can't do anything about it, that's just how it is, you know. Umm, I'm very lucky to hear that... That... That people stay with it. But it wasn't like... I can't... I couldn't have done it another way, and also that thing like I think... Y'know, umm... You can't, like, you can't [?] you can't write stuff to please people, you have to write it because it's what you got, that's it, you know - you sit down and give someone a painting or whatever, like, this is what I got. That's it. You know, I couldn't have gone any other way, this is me...
Thank you so much. But sadly I steal don't know what he means haha...so he means, the way he sees it, people stay in the past and think over and over again? or he's saying about the way to make something creative? what was the question? I want to say thank you again. I wish I was good at english. I have a feeling, I have many chances less to hear and see many things out of english. just english. btw, as a huge fan of him, I want to get inspired by what thom got inspired before THANK YOU!
No problem! I was happy to help. Basically he's explaining why Radiohead change their sound every album instead of just making music that sounds the same as earlier music that they already made. That's why Kid A and OK Computer are so different from each other. It's understandable that you still don't know what it means because he says 'umm' and 'you know' a lot, and since he's making up these sentences as he's talking they're not very coherent and they don't flow very well. Essentially he's saying that if you write music and you're trying to make it authentic and you are passionate about it (if you 'mean it'), you shouldn't make music that you think other people will like, and you shouldn't repeat yourself just to be safe and make sure people buy the music, you should take risks and try new things. Essentially the point is not to make artistic compromises, and to have faith in your new ideas. He also says that he does this because he 'can't not', which is his way of saying it's in his nature to take risks and he couldn't possibly make artistic compromises in order to make money or stay popular, because that's not the person he is. His personality is so against making musical compromises that it's like he couldn't possibly do it even if he tried. If there's anything you didn't understand in this comment, or in the original comment please say and I'd be happy to help you even more.
Well, I can tell you what it means to me. When I was a young artist, I released a record that was basically me trying to be something I wasn't. My bandmates were really into certain bits of rock from the late 60s and early 70s. They'd play me records all day long, and some of them I did like, but most I disliked. I knew it wasn't the kind of music or mood I was currently in in my life. But, to try to make them happy, and also to make myself seem smarter and potentially sell records, I went along with it and pretended to understand the emotion and soul behind that sort of music. It was an abysmal failure. It took me 15 years, but later I realized what a fucking waste of time that was, and that I should have just done exactly what I wanted to do. Now, I could have been very unlucky, and what naturally came out of my body may have been really repulsive or really uninteresting to most people, but there is no other way to make music. Would you rather be a fraud and a success or an honest artist and a failure? I'd rather be the latter. But the catch is that if you're truly honest, and just put it out there- yourself, naked, vulnerable and true, most of the time, you'll touch someone who feels the exact same way. And that single moment makes it all worthwhile.
When I was 4 (in 74) i wandered away from our house. I naturally went downhill. I remember playing on the stone staircase/arch that led to the abandoned Houdini mansion. When I was a teen it was a notorious drug addict house where junkies shot up. Crazy to hear that rick Rubin owns it now and people like thom from Radiohead get interviewed there.
This was they best Thom Yorke interview ive heard, you can make people feel ok.........im a solo musician.but stupid with the tech. Could i mail you my music...i could even do any music u need for free..you are an inspiration for a 41 yr .old like me,......
"Wow, I can't believe Thom despises conservatism!" Lemme tell you a little secret... did you know about a little, kinda obscure album called Hail to the Thief?
@UCgik2izJx7IWurZD7iYC3xw If you think everybody who dissents against right-wing corporatist bullcrap is a “Hollywood lib sheep” I highly advise you to go outside for a change, or alternative, read a book
Yea once I was playing around on the guitar in my living room after school and I acidentally wrote the first few bars of electioneering by Radiohead. At the time I had only heard the song a few times on the radio or at the mall, never intentionally listened to it anyway. So when I hit the first few notes of the song, which are just standard g minor penatonic scale, i just kept going thinking that the melody was coming from my head. So I kept playing till I ended up finishing the song and after a while I ended up recording it. I put it out on RU-vid and decided to name the song ‘Somewhere over the rainbow 2’. The video got over 30 views on the internet and so Walt Disney signed me a record deal with them. I played ‘somewhere over the rainbow 2’ at a my first concert in Down Under Australia. Among all the head-banging kangaroos I see Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead guitarist, who by the way is even sexier in person. He looked angry. At this point in time I realised that the song hadn’t come from my head and I had actually ripped of Radiohead. So at the sight of Jonny boy i darted for the exit. But just as I got there he cornered and BOOM he cracked me over the head and I was out like a light. I woke up tied to a chair, disorientated, in what looked like a massive where house. In the corner I see Jonny sharpening what looked a large collection of weapons. After a while of thick silence he slowly walked towards me with dagger the size of his of a guitar. He said only to words, ‘My song’ He started to press the dagger into my cheek, drawing drops of blood. I screamed hard into my sodden gag. Screamed harder and harder hoping someone would receive my cry of hope. But I had little hope, at least until I heard a cry. The high pitched girly voice of Thom Yorke. My prayers had been answered. He ran forward, covered my ears, and let out an almighty wail. Johnny was brought to his knees. Thom Yorke had saved. He said that I was 2.40x better than Jonny anyway so now I play as Radiohead’s guitarist but in disguise as Jonny greenwood. True story. I know no one will believe me because it’s a very crazy story but it is true. Kangaroos do exist.
For real, you're right, at least he cares enough to engage with political issues and speak his opinions . . what did ppl want?? What, oh, he's supposed to just sit there and expound endlessly on inspirations for songs? Glamorize through the recording process as if it's some magical journey, and then wax nostalgia while Marc summarizes his career? And sit around and laugh and tell charming and silly club stories? How many times can an artist do that interview?? God, ppl always reduce artists to the product of their art, as if that's the entire core of their being. If he wants to talk about society, let him.
This was the main question I had which is not mentioned anywhere here for some reason so I Googled it and it appears to be from 2013. Still no clue why the hell anyone would upload an old interview and not say when it's from.
Did... did our interviewer just ask Tom York if he was nervous about keeping up with Flea onstage? I hope he was talking purely about guitar technicals on that because otherwise.. ROFLMFAO Perhaps this is more of a musicians point of view than a general population one, but flea will never ever come anywhere near reaching the genius and or virtuoso level of Tom or Colin or Radiohead as a whole. Just lol.
Thom ,...you mean to say ,..you "Fired People"...like Trump?...OMG...Why?? 41:29 to 41:47 "Just get the fuck out for awhile, while we figure this out" -Thom York Sincerely, Peace & Love.... aka "Travel Ban" aka "Drain The Swamp"
Oh..??...Thanks for your concern "blablabla",.. so tell us,... Im sure everyone here would like to know why you think that I don't seem "OK"...Computer, lol....but be careful, because you might just find out that, it's you, that is infact the one that is not "OK".
@@notveryniceatallwell I live in Michigan I've been to Nashville on vacation...so no real call for denial. Jack White, peter frampton and taylor swift live there just for starters
thom's politics are simultaneously confused and simple. i love his music but he seemed to motivated more by ideology/feelings rather reality. doesn't offer up a better alternative and how it would work in practice
@ Darren Nash Listen to this "choir boy" @ 41:18 to 41:47 Then understand that if a "politician" in essence does the same thing,..for example, like ordering a "Travel Ban" for 6 months because nut jobs from certain areas of the world are coming to the US with the soul intent to in fact blow themselves up in the name of "Allah". Well then Tom Yorke knee jerkingly gets up in arms like a little neurotic twit talking shit about any strategic steps put in place in the name of national security to "curb" an on slaught of possible "terrorist" attacks. Kind Regards, All Of Uzbekistan (Is allowed to visit DisneyLand)...(But due to the passing rainstorm the "Matterhorn" shall not be in service at this time,... Mickey Mouse and I are very sorry if this has in fact caused any inconvenience for you and your family while here exploring the Magical Kingdom.)
