RU-vid started by standing up to conventional media to free up creativity. And it won! Before it was all about freedom. Now because of money, it's bowing down to the very enemy it defeated. Instead of telling advertisers, "if you want to advertise on RU-vid, respect it's freedom platform." They turn their heads toward the creators and said "if you want to create then respect our advertisers." Instead of defending the creators, in the name of money, it defended it's advertisers. What a complete reversal. I guess eventually, money wins. Who will stand for freedom?
Easier said than done. I am moving over to Twitch but still exporting videos to RU-vid. I also added a Paypal link so people can still support small channels.
Let me start by saying FUCK RU-vid/GOOGLE...we knew when Google bought YT they would FUCK IT UP....kiss my ass on censorship....they could simply put a disclaimer or make it 18 and over video....random BULLSHIT NAZI STYLE CENSORSHIP is NOT OKAY...there is NOTHING TO FUCKING UNDERSTAND.
There is a new platform that pays you for the start of your views with $1.00 a subscriber. They are about to take out RU-vid and Facebook. I'll post a link on when the company drops so you can join this company who can pay you.
I just do videos about my kids and I playing claw machines in the arcade. I don't have anything other than super family friendly content yet video after video gets flagged. I don't have any issue with RU-vid policing their platform, I have a problem with the fact that they have an EVERYONE is GUILTY until proven innocent policy. I would like to see every channel with a million subs or more make their channels private for 48 hours in protest. I wonder if that would force change? Tiny RU-vidrs like myself have no voice and no hope as it stands right now.
+NolaDad08 You might find the word "claw" is a problem for the YT algorithm. I just had several cute harmless baby animal videos demonetised that had "claw" or "scratch" in the filename.
Shteven 1 we need a place where we have the freedom of speech advertisers or RU-vid or maybe both need to grow up let us say what we want freedom is fought for over seas so let us use it
I think that it's hard for them to tell us specifically what 'advertiser friendly' means because the algorithm has evolved by itself over the years and the people working at RU-vid are not fully aware themselves.
Thanks, for key insights, Casey! I just started making videos a week ago then got AdSense working and figured out how to monetize, so I'm trying to learn all I can and your thoughts are a blessing! I never knew how big the RU-vid universe really was, and all the opportunity that existed, but this De-monetization may have to play itself out, to see the real long term effects. I know for myself, I decided I was going to begin living in front of the camera for the pure joy of giving my LIFESTORY a platform to encourage others and inspire us all to live life to the fullest. I love the fact that my Life can be a Story that others around the world can be a part of...and I will continue to journey with this V-log life adventure, even if I have no monetary gains resulting...and from what I see in your lifestory from your videos, you love the Vlog life as well!
Hey, if you have just a moment I would appreciate if you could check out my channel. I just started making videos with my friend, tell me what you think :)
RU-vid should police the comments section more than worry about what creators say. I've never seen such vile language in my 32 years of life as I do in RU-vid comments.
It's not a monopoly, the problem is that not many platforms are able to acquire a audience. There are probably thousands of youtube like platforms, they just fail to draw a audience, whether its from web design or something else.
It's only a monopoly because of us. We'd all have to collectively leave and never come back in order for RU-vid to hurt. It's that simple. That have a monopoly for sure.
lol @ monopoly. you do realize youtube is operating at a LOSS right? Meaning the company is not profitable. That is the reason their is no other service like youtube, because it's a not a business that is profitable. What other service allows you to just sign up with an account, and start dumping thousands of gigabytes of content for free. On top of that, if people actually watch all of that content you are storing FOR FREE, they will pay YOU money. It boggles my mind how entitled people are these days.
minds.com has a nice look. As someone else -- and many others -- said, it's just an audience problem. If you're a small channel trying to grow, it really won't matter what platform you use, because you'll have to grow an audience anyways.
I just found your vlogs at 3am this morning. I'm like, wow, this guy does great editing!... lol. Didn't know you were a director. Great work man. I love the soundtracks. Good stuff.
This is so well written and delivered. I was mystified by RU-vid's apparent fickleness when it comes to accepting 'advertiser-friendly' content, but now more clearly understand RU-vid's as well as content-creator's perspectives... Hopefully RU-vid will get the msg that they're not the only game in town!
No matter what it's suck for youtube starters. RU-vid should think a way to filter the videos people posted, not just put them in different baskets by looking at their subscribers.
their careers sure, but their lives? anyway, this is just youtube gaining control over who ever they want to marginalize. Many news shows talking against the establishment is getting hit very hard.
absolutely serious. he said it before that he wears that famous shades so he's able to look at the screen of his camera without us noticing it. this time he only intends to talk and not bother to look around behind him through that camera screen.
Im starting to love it the same man. Ads pulled out recently, but I cant see youtube going anywhere... its the #2 search engine and people love it for boredom, knowledge, etc. Keep creating my friend.
Prior to Google it made $0. Eventually it had to change. Either it was going to change itself, or whoever bought it was going to change it. And frankly, in spite of a few big things over 10 years, I still think RU-vid is pretty great.
as a software architect/engineer, i gave a talk in italy not long ago where i covered how youtube's algorithms are massively disrespectful of human creators. a google engineer was present and the consensus was agreement with me. i have since studied google more deeply and learned that since the beginning they had little interest in money or in humans - they primarily sought to create a giant AI system. basically, google exploits and just puts up the facade of being of service. truth is paramount.
Vaysm primarily the need is to increase self awareness, balance and health. end addictions, including to technology, money and external approval. self acceptance is key. in this way liberation can be more easily manifested by all. if you are asking which services to use online, there are alternatives to the large corporate behemoths. i run a social network that facilitates healing, balancing and evolving at ureka.org. there are others, minds.com is taking off.
If that's the case though, there will be enough people who would support a new free video sharing website. Another one would pop up that would be uncensored
A 2 min trailer impacting everyone & must see by all: www.abillionlives.com OR #abillionlives Talk about censorship, overreach, just.. wrong! When people should be thankful, appreciative.. even if just for the cleaner (NON deadly) air their families are no longer being forced exposure to?! Nope.. Of course govt, media, FDA, etc.. ALL losing a f***ton of money in cig sales because of... have been putting out garbage claims/scare-tactics; hoping people have no common sense & will believe their BS. That they can even do this is.. phew.. be afraid be VERY afraid! I am! =/ Not sure what happened to right/wrong, truth, fact/science/proof, freedom of speech, etc.. ALL out the window. Even worse imho= 2 days after North American premier of that movie was shown in Milw, WI.. coincidentally, FDA deeming regs went into effect: 8/8/2016= classifying any/everything related to vaping/e-cigs/liquids.. as a "tobacco product" (even tho... NO tobacco?!? Even stuff nicotine-FREE) Even if studies PROVE it's at least 95% better & healthier than smoking (which should be obvious, but still) & has killed, well.. NO one. Not 1, zip, zilch, nada. Not last yr, year before OR 10 prior to... while cigs/smoking takes the life of over half a million every year in US. Plus, even tho they've done nothing to get rid of what they already know to be killing SO many... poss even you, spouse, KIDS (>165,000 children die every yr in US.. just from 2nd hand 'cig' smoke! =o craaazy right!) Yet now, people are forbidden from saying any of that, if you're at all "in the business". Can't say safer, healthier, better than.. talk about study. Nope, banned, taxed, nothing new can be introduced to market as of 8/8 & unless/until fda approves via lengthy & $$$ process (like >$1mil per item) People need to know about this insane ruling & regs somehow passed!! ALL to keep big tobacco, big pharma.. chemo clinics.... drug makers & addictive tobacco cigarettes... on the marke & profitable! Creating revenue & grabbing $$$ from wherever they CAN!!! Just because... wow... mind.. blowing! That the almighty dollar is being so blatantly & in our faces put ahead of SO many human lives time & time again..... frankly, idk how the hell any of 'em sleep at night anymore!!! Sickening to say the least!!! =/ LIVE LONG(er).... VAPE ON! (I.... CAN & will say it.. saved my life after 25+ yrs of smoking!) #TRUTH #VapingSAVESlives #Abillionlivesfilm #notblowingsmoke #august8thorg #FDAsucks #vapingisNOTtobcaaoORsmoking
I love Casey and his channel but he is not one to listen to on this issue. He can't be objective. RU-vid has their favorites and Casey is one of them. He is more like a RU-vid employee at this point than a contractor like other creators.
He is right though, you're not entitled to money simply because you make videos, and youtube do have the right to take away your monetisation if they see fit. So there is objectively nothing wrong with having rules, the problems is like he said a) the rules are vague, and b) they are enforced by an algorithm. If you harass people, and constantly express hateful ideas, it is within a company's right to not want to be associated with that brand.
But RU-vid is a community and like everyone in the community he has the right to speak his mind and concerns. Makes more sense too since he's a favorite, which gives the community an opportunity for RU-vid to hear their concerns
Great video about a confusing issue. We are new content creators and were totally lost with this issue. Thanks for clarifying it in a manner we can understand!
RU-vid has grown alot without these rules. I don't see why they want to tighten things up even more. if advertisers want to pay youtube to display ads on videos then they're going to do that regardless. The VIEWERS that bring everybody money don't even care about being "advertiser friendly" they watch the videos with the ads anyway.
Advertisers don't generally want to be involved in controversy so it makes sense they are trying to put ads only on videos that aren't as controversial. They just need a better way of implementing it.
My reaction to the new monitasion rules, at first I was frustrated but after giving it more thought for a few days and watching other creators thoughts and learning the specifics, I see it from a different perspective now. Now I am more motivated after learning about the reasons behind their change. So now I have been thinking more about doing whatever I need to do to build my channel. I haven't put up very many videos and I'll be first to admit that I haven't put forward a lot of effort as far as creativity. I have 4 channels altogether. 1 is for the jewelry we make ( I will build on that one too.) 1 has my pet pythons, ( I have the most number of videos there.), The other is horseback riding in the desert , I think I did a good job with the last 2 but I've pretty much abandoned them. Haven't added anything to them in years. So I am thinking of closing those down and one by one uploading the old videos on North to Hope. Do a "Throwback Thursday" or something. I also have old video clips buried in my PC I could edit and upload. I also plan to make better thumb nails for the few videos I do have and maybe even re edit some of them. I am home full time now so I have time to make it a part time job. I don't expect to make enough to pay the bills but hope to build it enough to make enough to feed our animals and maybe get a better camera and wireless mic. I would love a wireless mic someday!. WHatever happens I enjoy making videos and having them to pass down for my great grandchildren.
Of course youtube can do that...it's called a business model. How else can they pay the bills? It's their house - and now you take off your shoes to come in ...or...don't....and don't diss the factory workers..they build the shit you & I consume.
Casey REALLY knows his shit. I don't think he'll have to worry too much about this new monetization update though. His content is too prime (and clean).
It's more frustrating for us non favored RU-vidr's Casey. As a small channel in a small niche, RU-vid offers me no help at all in any way. I had a competitor advertising on my videos in such ways that I had to basically block all ads related to my subject matter. Now I earn nothing. When I asked RU-vid for help in blocking just ONE same industry advertiser from my channel who competes with me they offered no help at all forcing me to pretty much close down most ads related to my video subject matter. My channel simply is not big enough for them to give me any attention. So what happens? We both lose. They lose great advertising options and I lose all my revenue. That does not seem in the best interest of the RU-vid community at all. RU-vid is dead for the most of us as far as earning money. Today you need subject matter that is popular to the masses and not just to a small group of people. So now I use my videos to sell product and make my money that way. Can't earn anything from all the views I get from RU-vid directly, that's for sure. I have to sell actual product using the videos as traffic drivers only. Come get some Catspit~!
Oh man! I subbed from your channel around 2011. Now, I do screen printing as a business. It saddens me that you don't earn from YT. I mean, I have no interest in growing a channel to earn but to think that you're posting tons of screen printing tips and tutorials for free, you deserve to get paid.
Hey there my friend! Thanks for subscribing to my channel and watching my videos. I appreciate your support. Yeah, these days the only way I make money is to sell screen printing equipment and supplies. The Golden Age of RU-vid is long gone thanks to Google. Good to hear my videos helped get you started! Thanks for the awesome sentiments :)
LOL..... if you knew anything about how to get attention on RU-vid you would know this thread is already working. I'll give you a free tip..... be a part of the RU-vid community by commenting on videos and participating in conversations and your channel will get traffic naturally. You're only helping this thread do the job by responding to it ;)
Yea buddy! I completely agree with you! All of my videos are about fishing, and my travels as a musician. No profanity, sexual content, hate speech, political issues, and every single video I post is getting nailed. Now eventually after manual review they deem it okay, but as soon as it gets uploaded, it gets slammed.. It's very frustrating..
It wasn't that amazing. I copied and pasted the transcript to a readability test online and according to the algorithm: Casey's speech was at a 7th/8th grade reading level on the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level.
+Micaela Abreu GURL who gives a fuckkkk my friend speaks Hibernian English which is like an Irish dialect of English with Irish stuff added which is great Speak how you want To who you want
Possibly the best response I've seen to this issue. Being someone who works in advertising, I've seen this happen with so many publishers/media owners. When advertisers pack a tanty, they nuke their offering because an initial blanket ban that pisses off creators/users is cheaper than losing money from advertising in the long run. It's sad, but until people are willing to pay for online services, advertisers will always have the final say.
+Yvonne Golden the ADVERTISER won't be aware what platforms their advertisements will be shown on. They most likely go through an agency, who then uses google, or the advertisers will go to google direct.
They do leave it to the advertisers. It's the advertisers who demand such restrictions not just on RU-vid but also things like banner ads on websites. When a company is buying ads using the 'ad network' model they don't really know where their ads will end up as they are targeting users rather than sites or channels and as such they want highly restrictive guidelines on what content is allowed to deploy ads from the ad networks as they don't want there brand to be damaged through association when they had no direct control on where their ad would be shown. As this model is designed to be low cost for the advertisers, easy entry for the content creators and low margins for ad network there just isn't really the money in it especially when so many channels use it to do a more hands on job of targeting ads to videos that are relevant to the video and which the advertiser is happy with being associated with.
Oliver Kavanagh i know that.... But im saying why cant the advertiser decide EXACTLY which videos to put their ads on? This whole automated system is what is screwing over creators.
One of my videos got stripped of monetization, I reported the mistake and they made it monetizable again in a couple of days. But it doesn't matter cuz no one watches my videos. LOL
actually even if they make videos back to monetizable in a couple of days, most people watch the videos before that and the youtubers loose a lot of money
Casey, incredible wisdom, you are at the pinnacle of your game, "the real deal" and your delivery should be taught at a collegiate level. I know you've heard this before, you ought to be the next "Mayor" of New York Bruh!! No joke!!
Do you realize the content creator doesn't get paid for views of people with an adblocker... so if you watch your favorite youtuber with an adblocker on, you are screwing them over. And no, youtubers are not the most overpaid people on earth. Casey brings some of the most entertaining content on this website and you get to view it for free every single day. He deserves every penny he makes. Get the stick out of your butt and show some support :)
Yes some people skip, some don't and we get paid for "watched" videos not videos a family member clicks on all day long to get "views" so a video can have 1m views but Google can tell you which are real views
RU-vidrs deserve their pennies if they have that mass of audience, they put in efforts and creativity, they make good videos like shows we watch on TV but often without a crew, & I appreciate creators like Casey who create original contents. He shoots and edits the videos all by himself everyday, he is responsible for viewers around the world, & I gain joy & knowledge from him. That, I can respect that.
i agree, he turns on a camera and records his day.... how the fuck is that hard, he gets payed to live, but the people who risk their lives fighting for his country get payed nothing... it is a joke
This is why i like the idea of getting a sponsor from an actual company and just mentioning them in your videos instead of putting adds in your videos.
+HEATWAVS maybe him because he makes good content, talking about the people who make shitty vidios and claim it as "alot of work" or "hard". in reality most youtubers take 1 hour to make a video that makes them hundreds. to me that aint fair.
+Lars Hoecker first let me say i agree with your original comment as some people make money off low quality videos. the ones who really make money spend like an hour or two editing a video and do it like every other day. so yeah casey fits the description haha
No, we do care about school shootings. You think we are like, "Oh another shooting, they didn't matter" This isn't just the US, it's the whole world. We have crazy people who do the craziest things. People make fun of it because they have nothing else to do, plus they are kids and don't care.
Man Casey (even though you might never read this) I am so glad I found your channel. I experienced this with two of my videos and trust me... there is "nothing" controversial in my videos. Yet all I had to do was open a ticket with RU-vid support wait about 24 hours and let them do what they needed to do. Once done. Hey I was back on track. Thank you for your thoughts and keep making these awesome videos man.
We're all with casey. We're a science channel constantly caught in the crossfire. We mention nothing political, nothing debatable, dangerous, controversial, or offensive. But our last three videos have been demonetized. Literally horse Sh**. Motivation is at all time low. Not our fault - we're following rules, and being penalized for it. The algorithm is bull.
Thanks for that Casey. 600 of my videos were just demonized today but the moment I disputed it and a person saw it... they switched everything back on. Tough situation for everybody.
Casey i agree with you on why RU-vid had a new policy. But for inspiring creators like myself, i just managed to earn my first $150 just a month ago in December 2017. Now i had been taken off from monetizing my channel which is such a BIG BIG discouragement to my many years of work, especually over the last 2 years which I had put in much more effort. I hope RU-vid sees the plight of budding cŕeators like myself and many others and make a good change for 2018 very soon. I love your honest review Casey.
I have never associated an advertiser with the content of the video, maybe I just don't care... But unfortunately a lot of people care too much about such pointless associations.
RU-vid is not doing the unmonetization its advertizers they do not want there ads on shit with rape, suicide, etc in the title they have been doing this for a long time
Now. Put a time line/history of youtube together . How did it start and how was the service paid for, who paid for all the equipment that run and stored files? when was it bought out?
Amazon has the same issues with vendor loyalty and algorithm policing. The problem is that some crap is allowed through and to soar to the top of the charts while other, more legit work gets punished. There are always ways to manipulate algorithms and the policing isn't uniform. To top it off, they also don't communicate very well and make serious pay changes without warning. A lot of people have started looking elsewhere and hoping for more competition against Amazon because they're loyalty has already been lost. I hope these big companies can start listening to the people who create the content that they make money from and take our concerns seriously.
It's funny how most youtubers say they don't make videos for money an that they do it for fun and the people, but now all of them are going crazy because videos are getting demonterised. I am not saying Casey does this but other youtubers do
Not "all of them" are "going crazy", as you put it. However, even if you make videos as a hobby suddenly losing the money from it can have a real and distinct negative impact. Equipment isn't free. Better computers to make better content isn't free. Time isn't free... or worthless. If you spent hours a day making videos for the world to enjoy, you don't think you should get something back? You're time isn't worth anything? That is like saying you would not be upset if you job cut your hours and pay... just a little. Even a little would upset you. Most RU-vidrs do make videos for fun. That doesn't mean that they should not be compensated for it. Imagine that. Being paid for something you love doing...
I love watching all the comments here, especially the trolling comments from people who have created nothing in life. Casey is not just a genius film maker, the man is a true testament to personal, positive and creative genius. His character and positivity are nothing short of remarkable and he is a true worldclass leader in the vlog space. Casey you are pure inspiration man.
Creative Destruction. It's what makes Capitalism work so well. Like many before it, You Tube is the victim of the arrogance of its managers, who have started to believe that its success is the result of their guidance when nothing could be further from the truth.
I tried to start monetization of my channel. After applying adsense messaged Unsupported Language. But Bengali and English is support adsense. How to sovle this problem? Any suggestion please.
Well said man. Protecting the RU-vid name is highly important. I'm one to say that I love RU-vid for all its done for me, but man is it getting harder and harder to get good views. My channel gets a fair amount of views, but I have a second channel that just cannot seem to see the day of light. One day a friend of mine tried searching my channel and they were like "I can't find it, what was the name again?" Seriously, make it harder and harder for me as if there is almost a personal vendetta. Anyway, enjoyed the video. Peace.
