The Pattern 1907 bayonet consisted of a one-piece steel blade and tang, with a crossguard and pommel made from wrought iron or mild steel, and a wooden grip usually of walnut secured to the tang by two screws. The entire bayonet was 21 3⁄4 inches (550 mm) long and weighed 16 1⁄2 ounces (470 g), although the weight of production models varied from 16 to 18 ounces (450 to 510 g). Originally the bayonet featured a hooked lower quillion, intended to be used to trap and snap enemy bayonets when grappling, this was later deemed impractical and replaced with a simpler design from 1913, often unit armourers subsequently removed the hooked quillion when the bayonet went for repair, although there is no evidence that this was officially directed.
The Pattern 1907 bayonet's blade was 17 inches (430 mm) long, it had a shallow fuller that was machined into both sides of the blade to save weight and add strength, the fuller was 12 inches (300 mm) long that extended to within 3 inches (76 mm) of the tip.[2][3]
Original hooked quillion of the Pattern 1907 bayonet.
The Pattern 1907 bayonet was supplied with a simple leather scabbard flitted with a steel top-mount and chape, it was usually carried from the belt by a simple frog. The Pattern 1907 bayonet attached to the SMLE by a boss located below the barrel on the nose of the rifle and a mortise groove on the pommel of the bayonet.
The combined length of the SMLE and Pattern 1907 bayonet was 5 feet 2 inches

This guys such a hack! Dude spent an hour plus just to figure out how to get 2 screws out. I would've used an impact driver and an oxy/acetylene torch and been done in 2 minutes tops.

Take an hour to carefully remove a screw as to not take the smallest of wood out. Then drop it on the ground. How funny would that of been if the handle shattered. Hahahaha.

Pattern 1907 British infantry bayonets are traceable by their maker marks stamped on the blade. There are a number of sites that list the various marks. I own an Australian manufactured Wilkinson sword bayonet issued to the South African Police in mint condition with its scabbard.

sorry, but the hook on the quillion was NOT to catch enemy bayonets, It was used to stack rifles in a teepee shape when camped or stopped in a non combat area. every rifle i know of from that era has some attachment for doing that, Some were on the bayonet some next to the bayonet lug on the rifle.

Those fit a US Model 1917 caliber 30.06 perfectly. My thought is the best thing to do is for you to act like a military armorer and return it to combat ready service. Patina is a bunch of bs. You want it refinished. Patina is just a nice name for rust some bum selling guns for more than they were worth came up with.

Pattern 1907 bayonet does NOT fit the model 1917 rifle! Compare muzzle ring on both. Bayonet for m1917 rifle also has two grooves cut into the wood handle to avoid confusion!

Great Job Justin. I found one of those in an excavation along NMR Avenue (Natal Mounted Rifles' Monument) in Durban South Africa. The scales were gone, and I replaced them with Teak scales off a piece of railway sleeper. Really difficult NOT TO OVERDO IT when you're restoring these. I love your attention to detail and appreciation of the historic significance. Thank you and God Bless.

This isn’t a restoration. Cold bluing isn’t bluing; it’s a layer of copper, the smell of which never goes away. Early or pre-war 1907 blades were brightly polished. Late-war blades were sandblasted. Blades were not blued until much later. The manner in which this blade was sharpened also isn’t period-correct.

So not really a restoration, more like a conservation. Restoration would bring it back to what it looked like when it was new from the factory.

I have a question. I have a MA 1907 that was given to me by a family member. I understand it probably doesn’t have a lot of value to it. It’s actually in remarkably good condition and the blade itself is still shinny. It does however have some rust in the bluing and on the recoso. Is there a way I can just give it a good cleaning both it and the scabord? Would just plan old steel wool work with oil? Any help is greatly appreciated

The bayonet turned out good. Take a look at Mark Novak’s site, in particular on conservation of a weapon. His site is Anvil, episode 075, “1911 Conserve and Reassemble”. At one point he talks about a wire wheel, I’m sure he meant carding wheel, big difference. He has other videos where he explains the difference for those who do not know. That said he boils his individual pieces in water to convert the rust. He is a great teacher at conserving a piece vs a restoration. He is primarily a gunsmith, but his skills are 2nd to none all the way around. Good luck.

Hi! Just found one in the cellar of my mother's house. It is probably a later ww2 production blade since the hilt, handle and scabbard are painted silver and the blade is almost spotless! It does have lots of battle damage on the cutting edge, and the blade glints in the sun like it likely did about a hundred years ago! It is missing rivets to hold the handle together though any idea where I can get some? As an archeology student this is a dream come true and I can't wait to complete it and bring it on expeditions to cut through the jungle for science rather than war.

@curiousentertainment3008 3 года назад
This is NOT a sword it’s like calling an m113 a tank it’s not. You ruined and devalued it by sharpening it. Bayonets aren’t supposed to be sharpened at all if you do the blade will stick in the rib bone and not come out easy that’s why they didn’t sharpen them.
@tortron
@tortron 2 года назад
interesting, i guess that makes sense. I have a model 1907 cut down to 7" blade length, would make a good pig sticking knife, and i have never seen a blunt pig sticking knife, you want it razor sharp to cut the arteries and heart as quick as possible. You would typically go through the ribs with that

I’ve got a 1907 gewehr 98, the stock was sanded and the metal painted black, I saw it on the shelf at the gun store and had to have it because I have an original and wanted one to restore, took the painted one and pulled it apart and stripped the paint and polish and blued, put a removable drop plate and now I can hunt with it, sometimes it’s nice to have something someone else botched so you can restore it guilt free! I also have an original bayonet with my other Mauser

I have dad's 1907 in a leather sheath that he made himself, the sheath now falling to pieces, the scabbard I never saw. I let one of the nephews have at it before I looked into it's history and started to read all the forums to date it and what the marks all meant. Too late now to keep it in original condition. Live and learn... I've got another couple of his old knives that need some new sheaths too and a little love and attention to the handles and blades. One of these days I'll get to them. I liked what you did with this one and the reverence with which you handled it.
