My wife is from Bamberg. And my mother-in-law had actually grown up on the 2nd floor of the house to the right of the corner house (Siechenstr. 72a). My mother-in-law was 13 at the end of the war. My wife later grew up on the 3rd floor after her mother was married in 1953 and her parents moved to the 3rd floor of that building. Fascinating to see that old footage.

I've been to Bamberg in the early Seventies, while stationed in Nurnberg. Bambergers like to say that their city, like Rome, is built on seven hills. It's a very Catholic town, too, abounding in old churches and monasteries. They also brew a unique brand of smoked beer. If I ever get back there, I intend to stock up! By the looks of this film, the city wasn't hurt too badly by the war. Certainly, it wasn't like Nurnberg was.

greetings from bamberg, indeed the city was fortunately saved from destruction, and is now a Tourist attraction, including for many retired Americans formerly stationed in the Warner barracs... ;-)

It's been a while since you posted and you may have discovered this on your own by now but I'll proffer the info just in case. Check around. You may be able to get Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier somewhere nearby. I was stationed in Bamberg by the US Army in the early '80s and had to do without the heavenly brew for nearly twenty years once I left. A friend mail-ordered a bottle for me in 2002 (19 years sice my last one) and since that time I've found a couple of places within driving distance (I mean across town, not a day trip) where I can get it. It ain't cheap - 5 to 7 dollars a bottle - but it's damned well worth it now and again.

I've had the privilege of visiting and staying in this beautiful old city a couple of times - glad the US Army captured it quickly, sparing it from the sort of devastation Nuremberg was to suffer just a few days later.

Gotta say the Americans and Bambergers have always been unique in relationships. From inspiring John Augustus Roebling the architect of the Brooklyn Bridge who first saw a suspension bridge in Bamberg in his youth in Bamberg The first US military governor of Bamberg Nathan Preston, is buried in the Lange Strasse cemetery. He became a native Bamberger and ran a toy store [Preston's toy store] in the US residential section up until his death in the mid-1980s.He was a key figure in the rapid rebuilding of lower Franconia and assisted my German grandfather in establishing one of the biggest sawmills in Franconia post-war. His grave has the following epithet under the crossed American and German flags. Nathan Preston Ein Freund der Bamberger.Long may that USBamberg friendship last.

What kind of tanks are shown here. Their turret design, gun mantlet and the wide tracks look so unfamiliar for a Sherman tank...
@rogerkeeling9869

I'm not an authority so could be wrong, but based on the date and the profile of the tank I'd guess they are Pershings. I'm open to correction if someone knows better.

Those are racks into which to pile sandbags, without the sandbags.

lots of broken track shoes on those Shermans?
@TheAngryYank
@TheAngryYank 7 лет назад
If you're referring to video at around 4:25, they did something to the tracks for snow, ice and soupy mud. I don't know if they had a kit to add to the tracks or they somehow reversed one track shoe (usually ever other five or so to maintain traction). Now, the US uses rubber track pads.

LillianMargaret B A, who said I was american, B how do you know I didn't have relatives how were part of the bombing operations, specifically areas like Dresden, Hamburg and the Ruhr, furthermore how do you know I didn't have holocaust survivors to tell me the tale of German atrocities first hand, and finally how do you know me or my direct family weren't German citizens who were victims of such air raids? you know nothing about me, and there's two ways for humans to handle tragic/traumatic events, you can cry like a little bitch, or you can laugh about it, also known as dark humor, I chose the latter of the two, enjoy "not laughing" at life.

The funny part of the systematic murder of Germany is that it was conducted by Germans. More Germans died in the German run concentration camps than were killed by the allies in WWII.
