Back in 2011, a disgruntled CM Punk announced to the WWE Universe that on July 11, his contract with the company was coming to an end. A short time later, Punk conducted the infamous "Pipebomb" promo on RAW, a promo where he mentioned his love for Paul Heyman, his views on The Rock & John Cena, and he even had some rather unkind things to say about his boss Vince McMahon, his daughter Stephanie McMahon & Son-in--law; Triple H.
While the Pipebomb did little to help Punk's tensions with the company, as a television product, it was one of the most talked about wrestling-related moments in years. The promo instantly made Punk a megastar in the eyes of fans, and he would use that popularity to his advantage heading into Money in the Bank 2011.
On the night that his contract was set to expire, Punk found himself in a WWE Championship match with John Cena. If John Cena won, Punk left the company empty-handed. If John Cena lost, he would suffer the ultimate consequence; he would be fired per a stipulation made by Mr. McMahon.
