Although The Undertaker managed to defeat Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 24, the rivalry between these two superstars was far from over. Following a successful title defense against Edge at WWE Backlash 2008, The Undertaker was stripped of the title by acting SmackDown GM (and Edge's fiancee) Vickie Guerrero. A rematch for the vacant belt occurred at the Judgement Day pay-per-view, a contest that The Undertaker won via count-out. However, a title cannot change hands with such a decision, leading to yet another title match
Choosing a match where Edge would have a clear advantage over the Deadman, Vickie Guerrero revealed that the World Heavyweight Championship would be decided in a TLC Match. As an added stipulation, if The Undertaker failed to win the match, he would be banished from the WWE. At WWE One Night Stand 2008, Edge and The Deadman met inside the squared circle, putting their blood and souls on the line to leave as champion. Thanks to interference from Chavo Guerrero, Curt Hawkins, and Zach Ryder, Edge regained the World Heavyweight Championship, sending The Undertaker away from WWE in the process.
During a brief feud with Triple H over the WWE Championship, Edge earned Vickie Guerrero's wrath when she discovered that Edge had cheated on her with newcomer Alicia Fox. Angered and hurt by his actions, Vickie sought revenge, and so she decided to reinstate The Undertaker. To make matters worse for Edge, he would face The Undertaker at WWE SummerSlam 2008 inside of the vicious Hell in a Cell.
