Am I the only one who has mixed feelings about the upcoming Retromania game? The gameplay and graphics looks awesome but I have a feeling that the roster is gonna be underwhelming.
As for why Bill Murray inducted George The Animal Steele, the two had acted together in Tim Burton's biographical comedy Ed Wood the year before. They wound up becoming friends. Murray couldn't attend the ceremony in person because he was filming the comedy Larger Than Life, in which his character inherits an elephant from his dead father.
HOF was really different back in those days-they used to hire a really cheap venue, made no effort with the room they were in or production values & after the next year's event they didn't even bother doing it again for six or seven years.
darkashtar I like burton when he doesn’t remake something with Johnny depp and his wife. He’s one of the most creative directors and I liked Batman, beetlejuice and big fish movies
Fun Fact: In Shawn’s entrance, at the start of it, which is cut from the Network version, he went over to the throne and tried on the crown, revealing that it was too big on him. Thus, spoiling that he wasn’t going to win, Mabel was.
i was there and remember him doing that. i remember the crown sliding to the side of his head. but at 12 i was too young to make the connection that it was a sign he wasn't going to win
This PPV actually holds a special place in my heart. I was 10 and a huge WWF fan but my parents wouldn't spend money on a ppv. I saved up my allowance for months, had my dad drive me to the cable company to rent a cable box for 1 day, and bought this PPV. Everything in this show was perfect to me through my rose colored glasses.
You my kind Sir, and hearing Brian pronounce your name, has got me now wanting to become a Patreon Backer just to possibly hear my name announced one day!!
The paid promotion was very fun. Brian is underrated in his creativity and under appreciated with his effort, love all the reviews and lists, maybe consider posting the PPV reviews on to an audio platform, you discribe in enough detail that the video is optional
Just like Savage at 'Mania 4. Don't know which 4 were worse, the matches all really weren't that good IMO. Thumbs up for Savage tho, Savio's matches were ugh blahhhhhhh.
Shawn had just turned babyface. It would have been the wrong move to put him in the ring with the Undertaker in June of 1995. The idea after WM 11 was to gain sympathy for Shawn.....so once he returns from injury fans would full on cheer him and accept him as a true baby face. You would risk Shawn getting booed TOO EARLY into his baby face run (as fans are still getting used to cheering him). In 95, heel/babyface distinction was still relevant. Shawn's popularity was rising, so putting him in the ring with Undertaker (at that specific point in time) I believe would have caused half the crowd or maybe MORE (besides women) to boo Shawn just as he's starting to gain traction as a bonafide baby face.. Nobody was going to boo Undertaker. Smart move to keep those 2 apart at the time imo.
@@WCWThunderRosa Just my opinion, but Shawn/Undertaker 1st time 1on1 at Ground Zero 97 didn't have a special feel to it.........for me partly because of the small venue and the fact that I felt their first time ever meeting could have been done at one of the (BIG 4) events........King of the Ring at least.
What's telling for me through watching the New Gen reviews is that without Bret Hart, Shawn and Undertaker WWF would have been under by 1997. The amount of shows those guys carried was amazing.
You can argue that Mankind carried the company partially in 1997 too. Because there was really nobody that could be on Takers level in terms of psychological warfare. Plus Makind had really good matches in 1997. Would you agree? @Adam Novice
I hope it's good. It'd be nice to have an actual good wrestling game for the switch. Though the pc version is probably the way to go for uploading everyone's custom characters and music and trons. I was worried when he was describing the game it'd turn out to be a mobile game so it's a pleasant surprise that it's not
King Mabel was a disaster, I wish they would have had savio vs taker because Taker actually has a history of having really good matches with him, especially in the days when savio was basically his old TNT ninja gimmick but with a mask. After leaving WWF savio would go on to form IWA in his native Puerto Rico and discover talent like Judas Messiah aka Mil Muertes and other lesser known but still iconic to the island such has Shane the Glamour boy,Andy Anderson, Mikael Judas, he gave guys like Chet Jablonsky and Flash Flanagan a home and Yes! We were the first place Daniel Bryan went to when he got kicked out of the wwe for chocking a guy with his own tie.
Makes sense that Taker would have good matches with Savio, they were BSK together and Taker always went out of his way to pull out all the stops for his buddies, everyone from Rikishi to Kane and Yokozuna.
Was unfamiliar with Vega's work in Puerto Rico until I did a search and saw him wrestling against the infamous Mr. Pogo. Wild stuff, Puerto Rican wrestling is criminally overlooked.
Actually, the two Taker fans at ringside did play a part a little later in the whole build to the casket match with Kama at Summerslam. During a match, the guy laid a funeral wreath at ringside for Kama and Kama ripped it up. The dude went to pick up the pieces and Kama then went and beat the hell outta the dude while his lady watched in stunned horror. So in addition to getting what was left of the urn back from Kama, that attack added extra fuel to the fire for the Deadman
In a parallel universe this paperview is appreciated for pushing new stars like savio Vega, Mabel over more established superstars such as the undertaker, Yokozuna and Shawn michaels. In the other universes it's known as king of the ring 1995- the worst wwe paperview of all time!!
The fact that actual crickets are chirping outside my window, made their reaction to the beatboxer joke even better, lol. Love the channel, keep up the great reviews bud!
Actually, Bam Bam Bigelow was fired by Corporation on an episode of Raw after he lost a title match against Diesel. Corporation attacks Bam Bam, Diesel assists Bam Bam and here comes face turn.
Big Daddy V was almost a good gimmick, but he was so utterly horrendous and dangerous as a worker by that point that he was beyond salvageable as a talent.
In the early UFC, it was a tournament & guys legit fought either 3 or 4 times a night. & I myself watched Chris Jericho wrestle 3 matches in one night.
@@heisensaul5538 it was hilarious! Blurring out a logo! LMAO 😂 😂😂 😂😂 😂😂 😂😂 😂😂 😂 Don't let the logo been on the ass part of the crouch area... That sh_t would of had me laughing my ass off...
@Chris Terry Honestly, all of the PPV was a case of 'Good Workers, But Booked Horribly', not that people like Savio Vega were going to have 5 star matches, but people like him and Godfather/Kama were at least good in the ring.
@@thatguy3718 I was....thats why I defend the Attitude Era against younger geeks. "Meh, AE was overrated and it sucks" Kids, watch this video, THIS is what proceeded the AE.
@@KHayes666 Well, the AE is overrated and quite often sucked. And I lived (and sometimes suffered) through 1995 and 1996. Also, it is unfair to put up this event as if everything at that time was like this.
I feel bad for mable. He may have been wreckless but they gave him such an outdated gimmick how could anyone like that. That's not what a rapper looked like in 95 lol.
Mitch Colburn what a stupid fuckin thing to say! First.. referees ARE trained, how to take bumps and moves, especially at the wcw level! And even if they weren't...trained to do WHAT exactly?! Lay on the mat and wait for the move?! He wasn't taking a hurricarana! He was just supposed to lay there! Savage fucked it up! And even aknowleged it and apologized!
Bret. The Warrior has the character of a superhuman thing that takes a lot of punishment. Bret's a skilled grappler who knows what he is doing but is still joe smoo physically. he shouldn't be kicking out of getting dropped on his head three times by the King of the Piledriver.
Whenever I hear Owen Harts name i always think of what a great wrestler he was and the matches he would have put on if he hadn't suffered that terrible accident. RIP Owen
Damn Shawn, it's almost as bad as the dooblie-doo Jake the Snake did before his blindfold match. Though at least that ended up producing one of the funniest moments in any OSW videos
@@speedy932key4 well they both wore big black bags over their heads, and Jake put his hand underneath the bag to touch his face and it revealed the viewing slot in the bag because you could see his hand through it. It was like a black mesh, so without the reveal he did it just looked like the whole bag was solid cloth
Mostly as a counter point to 8:00 As a life long wrestling fan, I have to give credit to the kid-friendly characters of the early 90's. I was born in 1984 and my family watched a lot of wrestling. In the early 90's, I was a kid and my Dad gave me our old 13in tv to put in my room. I only had a few channels, because I had to get them through an antenna. One of the channels showed wrestling and I always seemed to catch the days when WWF was on. I saw Doink, and Duke the Dumpster, Adam Bomb, and Jeff Jarret. I loved the characters, their styles, the flashy way everything was presented. I also loved Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, Razor Roman, and Diesel. You had a great blend of cheesy characters and guys who could work their butts off. Long story short, I don't think the character side of the early 90's get enough credit, it was aimed at 9 year old children like me, (at the time) and made them life long wrestling fans. I got to age with wrestling, because if you remember, not long after this, the Attitude Era started right around the time a lot of our angsty teenage years did. Anyway, rant over. Hope you are well, and I feckin love the channel! Check out my hobby shop, I wont link it because I think me saying this is pandering enough.
I agree. Beter cheesy characters than no characters or xerox copies of the same character over and over again (which resulted from the Attitude/nWo periods).
This was my first ppv I had ever watched live, the reason being because there was a big thunderstorm in Pueblo, Colorado on the day and somehow made the ppv viewable on the usually scrambled ppv channel. I watched it for free and still wanted my money back.
I loved when the macho Man , was like If you told me that yokozuna weighed a thousand pounds I'd be likely to believe you , it was so cheesy , I loved it
@@ComicSams48 they were both large superstars who were pushed to the top and were known for injuring people. Mabel had injured the undertaker and Kevin Nash, and Nia Jax injured Alexa bliss and Becky Lynch
@@bajor818 No, I am talking about their career as door openers, they didn't get invited back for KOTR 96. Thank god they didn't mess that one up. Imagine if it went "Austin 3:16 says I just tripped over one of them clumsy door opening sumbitches..."
The only thing is.. Nash did face Mable later that year and copped that giant sit, even after he told Mable not to. Just imagine the other guys saying "We told ya man.."
I had No Mercy UK on VHS as a kid. It might even have been the first PPV I ever saw. Will never forget it. I think I watched it a few years ago and in hindsight, Triple H vs. Taker vs. Steve Austin was not as good of a main event as it should have been, and the undercard was mostly terrible. But whatever, it had Kane and I thought Kane was the best. Also Shane McMahon, EUROPEAN CHAMPION.
Dude, I was 14 when this went on. Imagine this being the only thing to look forward to other than WCW Saturday night in 1995, while there's no internet and extremely limited wrestling media options. It was skin to playing Madden today, because its the only option. THANK GOD for Shawn vs Bret, and for the nWo...
1995 had it's moments but it was such a mess of bad decisions. Sure, it's easy to say that now, but this tournament was a great example of how shit it was.
Backlund was one of my favourite wrestlers from this time. When I was 10 or so, seeing him ragdoll other guys, no costume gimmick, just a madman. Staring at his shaking hands reveling in the aftermath always sent real chills through me. Look, I was 10, all I knew about wrestling was a plush Hogan doll that me and my brothers used to pound on all the time before turning on each other. I was into all the bottom of the barrel guys. Duke the Dumpster? yup. IRS? Loved to hate him. Atom(Adam?) Bomb? I thought he could beat Taker. Doink? Down with it. Crush, Tatanka, BamBam and Luna, loved all of it Lucky for me, and all of us, Attitude was just around the corner.....
Lmao I know this comment is a couple years old but I was literally the same age and loved the same aspects you did! I used to have a toy briefcase where I put tape on it and wrote "IRS" on it lol. We grew up in the best time IMO. Just a side note I loved the Backlund/Bret Hart rivalry back in the day.
Brian, there was one other guy who used the company's name on their attire. Koko B. Ware had the WWF initials on the back of his tights during WrestleMania IV.
My Boy Tío Savio Vega! Dude could always work a good match and Was very athletic for his frame , Very Humble man too :) Also Hugo Savinovich with Carlos Cabrera on spanish commentary Are always great
Dok Hendrix called a few episodes of Raw around this time too, he was possibly the second-worst regular commentator WWE ever had (the number one spot goes to Rob Bartlett).
I love that at this point they were so done with the Lex Express that he couldn’t even qualify for a quarterfinal match in this tournament. Holy shit what a burial from 1993 to 1995
Thanks for reviewing this Brian; I was there in the nose bleeds, as a young 11 year old fan. Even then, I knew the quality and overall PPV was bad, lol.
Quick translation of what the French announce team was saying in that clip : Ray Rougeau: *something something* bring Euro Disney to the United States ! Jean Brassard: It's an excellent idea ! Ray Rougeau: It's completely crazy. Jean Brassard: No, not at all ! Vince McMahon: HAHAHAHA !!
If Gable wins, it could help give him the push he needs. But if Baron wins. He'll prob just be like any other heel winner lately. Just end up going no where then the gimmick is dropped.
"Combined Bobby Heenan and Drive Time Radio" perfect description. WWF decided to switch Dok to a good guy interviewer. He was starting to go down Rob Bartlett Boulevard but they saved him. He ended up working out.
In the subject of WM21, in hindsight, the most important aspect of the PPV was the crowning of Cena and Batista. At the time, though, what really mattered at least to me was Angle vs. HBK, one of the all-time great WM matches. And it also had the first MITB ladder match, and the start of a really good feud between Randy Orton and The Undertaker.
I am pretty sure that Vega going 4 matches in one night was intended as a "fuck you" to Randy Savage as they were openly promoting it as a record, despite Wrestlemania 4 existing
*Ahem* Crown Jewel 2018 was the worst PPV in WWE history when it comes to Brock Lesnar's undeserving Universal Title victory, the WWE World Cup & old-timers wrestle their asses off until they fucked everything up. Hoping that the sequel won't go from bad to worse.
Vega over Yokozuna should have carried more gravitas than it did. Within kayfabe, he beat a former (2-time) WWF Champion. Though this show ingrains Vega's theme in to the memory.
The reason why Bob Holly has the WWF logo on his trunks is because he's a NASCAR driver. I bet WWF was one of his main sponsors at the time, so he'd put the WWF logo front and center on his race car, his racing suit, and his wrestling trunks. If Dale Earnhardt Jr was a wrestler he'd have had Budweiser, AMP energy drink, National Guard, or whatever his sponsor was at the time on his wrestling trunks just like Bob Spark Plug Holly.
In retrospect, they should have switched Savio and Shawn Micheals in the tournament. They could have had Razor and Shawn have a segment together, which would have helped add even more build to their Summerslam match.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the cut-from-the-Network classic moment of Shawn Michaels's hubris: He was ticked that he wasn't going all the way so he tried on the crown to demonstrate it couldn't possibly fit him
The 1994 Raw game for Super Nintendo would be a cool reissue and revamp. Add tag teams Smoking Gunns, Men On A Mission, and mid card guys Adam Bomb, Kwang, Marty Jannetty, Jim The Anvil, British Bulldog, Bob Backlund and Tatanka. Good game when I was 11, the roster for those games just wasn't able to showcase many particular feuds or PPV shows. Maybe even get the Quebecers, the Steiners, Money Incorporated, Headshrinkers and Heavenly Bodies as unlockable teams in some kind of gauntlet match challenge to unlock characters. 1994 King of the Ring tournament unlocks Owen, Anvil and Bulldog ? All kinds of ideas based around the 94 and 95 King of the Ring tournaments. Would be a fun retro game.
I never watched this PPV but back in 1995 Cable PPV was analog so I would listen to the audio. And I was glad I did not pay for it. I was listing to is wile I played with my LJN wwf Action figures
Which is worse: remembering something because it was so terrible, or forgetting something because it was so meaningless? I think a lot of people in wrestling would agree with you and say the latter is worse, but I'm more inclined to go the other way and say Mabel was the worst KOTR.
Good review BZ, however, as an actual friend of Nelson and Bobby ( Mabel and Mo), you and the rest of the world didn't know the REAL reason that Mabel won the King of the Ring tournament!!!! Vince LOVED Nelson and as a side note, I was sitting next to him when Vinny Mac told him (on speaker phone) that we would make him a millionaire.......if he would stop smoking marijuana, as he was hitting a joint. They were going to put the WWF title on him, but he couldn't and wouldn't stop smoking. Once AGAIN......Vince LOVED Nelson.
