Homeless during his teenage years in Canada, Roddy Piper found a lifeline in pro wrestling with help from a bagpipes gimmick. After honing his heel role in Los Angeles, "Rowdy" Roddy emerged as one of WWE's most notorious villains in the 1980s, his boisterous attitude fueling a series of feuds and his long-running role as host of Piper's Pit. His contributions recognized with induction into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005, Piper remained a central figure in pro wrestling until his death in July 2015.
Lured to World Wrestling Entertainment (then known as the World Wrestling Federation) in 1984, Piper fueled the sport's transformation from a niche curiosity into a mainstream attraction. With his gift for gab - and collection of ideas and catchphrases gathered on legal notepads - he became the host of Piper's Pit, a talk show featuring interviews that frequently turned contentious; one ended when Piper smashed a coconut on the noggin of Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, while another went south when Andre the Giant hoisted his host in the air and flung him.
Piper reached new heights with his villainy at an event in late 1984, when he smashed a gold record over the head of Captain Lou Albano and subsequently "kicked" Albano friend and pop star Cyndi Lauper. This led to Piper's January 1985 "The War to Settle the Score" match with Hulk Hogan on MTV, which brought even more attention to pro wrestling with the introduction of famed tough guy actor Mr. T to the proceedings.
Building on the narrative of the Piper-Hogan/Mr. T feud, WWE launched WrestleMania, the first of what became an annual flagship event, to PPV audiences in spring 1985. Piper and Mr. T were again among the main attractions of the following year's WrestleMania 2, their boxing match ending in Piper's disqualification for body-slamming his opponent.
Intent on always delivering a show, Piper saw to the shearing of Adrian Adonis' locks after his win at Wrestlemania III and famously hosed down talk show host Morton Downey Jr. at Wrestlemania V. He also knew how to use his talents to help his co-stars, helping to set up Bret Hart's comeback win for the Intercontinental title at Wrestlemania VIII.
Following a sabbatical, Piper returned to WWE in 1996 as interim president and again figured into a central storyline, culminating with his "Backyard Brawl" beating and disrobing of Goldust at WrestleMania XXII. But the fissures with the organization were beginning to show, along with the toll taken from years of physical punishment in the ring.
Piper remained a central figure after his enshrinement, pairing with fellow veteran Ric Flair to claim the World Tag Team Title from the Spirit Squad in November 2006's Cyber Sunday, before easing out of the ring as he approached his 60s.
His innate entertainment abilities translating to an array of screen credits, Piper notably starred in John Carpenter's cult sci-fi favorite They Live (1988) as John Nada, a vigilante who takes on society's brain-controlling aliens. He later joined several WWE colleagues in the reality show Legends' House, and found a new format for his storytelling by way of a stand-up comedy act.
Piper had four children with his wife, Kitty, who have spoken of the difficulty of the husband and father being on the road for most months of the year.
On July 24, 2015, Piper appeared as a guest on The Rich Eisen Show. He had trouble collecting his thoughts and staying focused, often rambling and not answering Eisen's questions.[152]
Six days later on July 30, 2015, Piper died in his sleep at the age of 61 at his summer residence in Hollywood, California.[153] His death certificate cites a cardiopulmonary arrest caused by hypertension, listing a pulmonary embolism as a contributing factor; TMZ reported this as a heart attack caused by the embolism. Piper was cremated and his ashes laid to rest at Crescent Grove Cemetery in Tigard, Oregon.

He was so freaking nice. Met him at a horror convention. Was there with my husband at the time. When we got up to meet him and he heard my husband's British accent, he had a story to tell us about one time he was at a hotel in England and got locked in the hall, naked. It was about 10 years ago. I wish I could remember the whole story in detail. If you ever been to a convention, you know they rush you through the line. Roddy acted like he had all day to talk to us. ❤ As a fan of 80s wrestling, would love to see a Von Erich video. Had to rush home from church every Sunday to catch them wrestling.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw you did a video on Roddy Piper. By far, one of my favorite wrestlers. I still have my giant Rowdy Roddy Piper action figure I bought years ago. I was fortunate to have front row ringside seats to see him wrestle back in the mid 80's. Ivan Koloff is another wrestler who was nice. I met him in Kinston, North Carolina while attending a minor league baseball game. He had a table out front of the stadium selling some merchandise. I bought his book and he wrote a nice note in it. His grave is about 90 minutes from where I live. One day I will take a drive to visit his gravesite.

Hello Scott...Thank you for your story on Roddy. Always been a big fan and as a fellow Canadian, we were so proud of him!!He had such a bigger than life personality and yet behind the scenes a loving husband and father. You prob wouldn't have known my father but maybe your Dad would have seen him when he wrestled in Toronto and all over Ontario and the states. He was part of a tag team known as The Love Brothers. He and his partner were big in the 1970's. My father was room mates in Georgia with Angelo Mosca and Rick Flair was a good friend. Andre the Giant was a bigger than life man who I got the honor of meeting. Dad was in the other car the night Andrian Adonis was tragically killed. They were on a big wrestling tour in NFLD. My father never recovered from the loss of his friends that night. Wrestling really became popular in the 80's with Hulk Hogan. It was so entertaining! When Roddy passed away, it was such a shocker. So young and he had so much more left to share with the world. God Bless and look forward to your next video!

I literally just posted something about his devotion and dedication to family. Some wrestlers differ in opinion on how tough he was in a real fight. Some differ in opinion on how some events unfolded. But EVERY wrestler I’ve ever seen interviewed on Hot Rod? He had psychology knowledge second to none on how to fire up a crowd either against him or for him depending on his role….and most importantly in life? He was exceedingly devoted and dedicated to his family. At the end of our lives- what defines success? To me? It’s about how we impacted our families- were we generally nice (everybody has off days), And where we dedicated and devoted to our family. Very few people are successful in both profession and family….it seems Roddy was one of the rare ones that figured out how to be successful in both.

I love the headlock story you told! I subscribe to all of your friends channel's Scott and love every one of them! Take care everyone!

@SCOTTONTAPE tell Ray to use Banana Boat 100 in a green bottle. He will not burn at all using that. We use it at Disney World and never get red!

I'm not much of a RU-vid commenter but Scott you are terrific. You can take a story that normal media would due no justice to, and you bring humanity and respect to the story. Thank you; God bless.. Amazing content.

Roddy Piper líved the WW Dream like no other. He helped shape it, and become one of the industry's most loved characters. Forever grateful. Fondly remembered, dearly missed.

Fun fact: Roddy Piper and I went to the same middle school in Toronto (in different years). Donview Heights Junior High School. He was in town (this was in the mid-80s) and was interviewed by either the Toronto Sun or the Toronto Star. He said that he might come back and visit and my friends and I got all excited! But he didn't return while I was a student there. He was so handsome!! Bret Hart, too!! Wow!! Great video, Scott!! Super cool of you to fly to Portland to visit his grave! 👍🏾

Wow. So glad I found your channel! It’s nice to connect with folk who lived and loved this golden era of wrestling. I feel bad for wrestling fans today that will never truly know what is was like being a fan back then. Piper was always at the top of the list. Total Icon who paved the way for others. Well done video man. You’ve earned yourself a new subscriber.

My sister and my grandfather were into the 80s wrestling so I knew all of those wrestlers because of that its too bad so many of them have passed :(. My grandfather would get into it soo much that he would rock back and forth in his chair and stand up and punch the air lol we use to laugh at his antics while watching wrestling back then lol.

Thanks for showing us Roddy's grave, Scott. I met Roddy in December '96 after a Monday Nitro show. I was 15 and knew wrestling was staged, but I still loved it. Me and a handful of other fans found our way to an area that had backstage access, so we waited to meet whoever came out that way. The Disco Inferno came out and signed autographs, Scott Hall was a little tipsy and walked by a few times [he acted like he didn't see us and rolled his eyes at us😆], and Stevie Ray quickly signed autographs before ducking out. Roddy Piper came out last and talked to every fan. Although he didn't spend a lot of time with us, the way he talked to you made it feel like you were the only two people in the arena and that he was glad you came to the show. That was such a cool experience with an absolute legend!

It's admirable that the nerd rage dude showed up. I had a friend who got a wasp sting. And his face swole up so bad he looked like he had a growth or a forgotten twin deformity for a head for about a month. People kept saying ' you gotta go to the hospital ' because he looked like a monster. Or a goblin or mutation from the bowels of the sewage that formed hideous, mishaped abhorations that only Dr. Frankenstein could have imagined 😛🍿

Great video man. Way back in the late 80’s I went to wrestling event when the NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) was still around. The main event was Wahoo McDaniel and Roddy against Jake the Snake and Greg Valentine. It was a memorable because each wrestler was strapped to their opponent’s wrist. I haven’t looked yet,but there was a segment on WWF where Roddy played the part of Ebenezer Scrooge in a Christmas Carol kinda thing. Hopefully it exists here on RU-vid. It’s Roddy being the Roddy your video remembers. Thanks.

Roddy Piper and Hulk Hogan were referred to as "The Boys" by a much older wrestler by the name of Duncan McTavish. His real name was Matt Gilmour who had a talk radio show out of Toronto after he retired. He knew them and many other upcoming young WWF wrestlers. I worked for Matt at the horse farm he worked and lived on. His other passion was horse racing. A lovely man who told the most hilarious stories about wrestling.
