Wynton just eased in and smooth 😎 played the horn with out forcing anything. His sound very different and distinctive. He even laughed on his horn. Arturo he can blow the heck out of that 🎺... sick range speed ect... just 2 styles of players outstanding. Folks had a wonderful treat.
So many negative comments. I love the conversation, Arturo really listens to Wynton and changes tack. Both artists starting out in their "comfort" zone and slow compromising their style to reflect the other. Lovely. Thanks for sharing.
Wynton made his point here. I can confirm after attending 2 jam sessions he played at.... make no mistake he's a VERY competitive player. I am not a fan of everything he says or does but one thing I will say He's constantly thinking about the melody/swing then the technique.
Arturo approaches the horn like a Trumpet player whereas Wynton approaches the horn like a vocalist. This gives Marsalis the advantage in many ways. Both players sound fantastic here though and they both have a lot of respect for each other.
But if Arturo works on his backhand, he might win the next grandslam. Stupid analysis, music is not a sport, not a competition, everyone has their own unique voice, and there's no reason to compare people, except to say "I, personally, like Wynton more, because he sounds to me more like a human voice, which I like".
@@crapadopalese Theres always been competition in Jazz. There have been cutting contests since the time of its birth. The history of Jazz is filled with famous stories about legends battling other legends. Theres performance... and then theres this. Yes, in a performance or concert setting I agree that its about individual expression and interpretation... that was not the function of this battle.
SuperSobrevalorado
You can tell that Arturo has mellowed and magnified his playing in the last 25 years. In his younger days he went to the fireball playing more often--he can still do it, but now he can do so much more. Arturo está sobre valorado y la verdad es muy chistoso que digan que es un gran trompetista de jazz virtuoso 😂😂😂es un gran agudero ruidoso eso así y parale de contar
@@ralphnuolo3359 you talk total bollox. Arturo is a total genius not only as a musician but as a trumpet player. Has more his ‘own’ style that Wynton. Both fantastic different trumpet players. Could Wynton do the album Trumpet Evolution. No.
Masterfully approach by Wynton..every note or phrase is played well within context and tells a story. Arturo on the other hand is a technical genius but lacks musicality..
Man, he didn't even play with any kind of musicality... just a bunch of empty runs and high notes. I wasn't aware it was a competition to see who could play the most fast and loud nonsensical noise. Sorry you can't see the depth of Wynton's playing
@@masonkleinEven the late Miles Davis was not totally impressed about Wynton Marsalis because of his limited technical skill, limited range and scales and no style of his own
Why would Wynton want to play like Arturo? But Arturo would love to play like Wynton. Marsalis played music in this exchange and Arturo just played loud, high and fast. Just LISTEN 👂
@@tapmaan6150Arturo is and always has been his own man. He plays the way he wants to that very few other trumpet players could even if they did want to. What sort of session would it be if each player just copied the same style? Arturo as a musician and indeed trumpet player is far more forward looking than Wynton. Remember Miles Davis saying about Wynton when he was asked ‘he’s just a good trumpet player that’s about it’
More like devolved....while both are virtuosos and well established, neither compliments the other. The sound goes out the window with no melody, pinching notes out, poor musicianship. Both are so much more capable than this display.Arturo has a monster sound and Winston is known for his Dixie jazz style with a very reserved but airy sound on his Monet. Small mouthpiece and impish sound here.
I really don’t like Sandoval musical ideas ..... if you put the Rhythm ideas they are just 16th notes in a row in a scalewise form and half notes ...... I mean ..... no cadence , no good phrasing , no interesting harmonic development , just a bunch of random notes here and there , and the ugly thing is his aggressive attitude towards trumpeters , Sandoval tried to defeat Wynton but he was destroyed with class
It's just your point of view. Can I tell you my point of view? Arturo just wants to play. It shows that you are doing your best because you acknowledge the other person. But Wynton keeps trying to teach Arturo. He's not doing his best. The rude one is wynton. That's a stage where they talk to each other, no one can trying to teach anyone. Wynton always try to teaching someone. He didn't even recognize old jazz trumpet masters and always accepted their achievements selectively. If you look at the autobiography of Miles Davis, that part is detailed. 'Cause even Miles was mad at Wynton's rudeness.. Funny thing is, some people say Arturo is rather aggressive. Arturo is not aggressive at all. He's been making music in that style all his life. Similarly, Wynton is warm and considerate when he is in a superior position, but he is always ridicule and tease like that for seniors or jazz trumpeters of the same level. That's Wynton's fight and that's his how to talk. Wynton's loyal fans are always fooled by that. Wynton should fix the rudeness.
@@delicious9824 mmmm …. Believe me dude, Arturo is nasty, not just his horrendous improvisation skills but his attitude, Wynton changed a lot, but Arturo is the same cocky
@@ralphnuolo3359 What are some cases where Arturo is cheeky? You are not even worth believing. Your musical level will not be welcomed anywhere. because you call that someone's best performance is terrifying. Arturo has done a lot of much warmer music than Wynton. And he's been working with a lot of other people. He had worked with dozens of times more people than Wynton. Is it possible if he is cocky? Is Wynton, who works closely only with the Lincoln Center family and New Orleans family, all the time, or Arturo, who works with anyone and even Wynton? You are not 'worth trusting'. There is no logic.
Who said he has to stick to fundamentals? Yeah, it may not sound pretty but it's expressive. Plus, both of them started to sound like they were out of ideas, or at least good ones.
Can't you just enjoy it? Why do to need to single one thing out? Two award winning musicians are trading, and you think to remark on one of them. Ignorance.
Jazz is not learnt in schools ! Jazz Schools just transform stupid people into theoretic stupid reading people. Arturo=Inovation. Marsalis = Repetition of phrases already played by the great masters, a compilation of one and other. Jazz is reinventing itself ! Go listen Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis , Freddie Hubbard, James Morrison, Kenny Kirkland, Michael Brecker, etc
Techically speaking Wynton is truly is limited in range, progressive scales and lack of style of his own. If you watch the interview of the late Miles Davis regarding his own opinion about Wynton performance well he's not totally impressed.
Man.....this is so boring scales And scales no blues feel wynton in his boring quarter on strong beats , Arturo on his old licks for major tonalities this is mediocrity
