I know I'm late with this and others have probably said similar, but something I learned as a kid shooting film was to get into the habit of gently swiping my left thumb across the rewind knob until I feel a little tension from the film. It also takes out enough slack so that I can be sure the knob will visibly spin when I advance the film, for extra assurance. I always do this when picking up a camera that's been sitting for any period, but even after that initial check I'll probably check a couple more times throughout my use of it just to make sure everything feels as expected and there are no surprises. I took a decade away from film, and now have returned to only occasional shooting of it, but it's still muscle memory for my thumb: if I'm holding a 35mm film camera, my thumb will check to see if the rewind has tension or if it's free-spinning. I also automatically check a camera this way before opening it, never making an assumption about whether it's loaded or not. I never deploy the rewind lever to do this, or actually grab the knob; I don't want to pull hard on the sprocket holes or gearing. I just brush the knob to verify that there's film tension. I think these are the kinds of handy little tips that get lost nowadays because people picking up film in the digital era tend to be kind of learning it by word of mouth from other people just picking it up, whereas during the film era we usually learned from someone older who'd been shooting for decades and had established habits to pass along.

It was really cool to hear your experience w/ the disappointment with scans. For a lot of people, shooting film is sort of a solitary thing because most aren't really involved in the "artistic" pursuit of it in 2020. But receiving bad scans when you know the shot is good, and the film is good, can be super disheartening. Also, re: vignetting on the 35; yeah, it does that. Overexposing by a couple of stops helps mitigate it so that it's more easily rectifiable in post, but it's still a PITA. Though for the money, it can't be beat. All around, really enjoyed this video. Good stuff.

Aw man my stomach sunk when there was no film in the camera! I’ve started obsessively watching the rewind lever for at least the first 10 shots. It makes me feel better ever time I see it spin while I advance the film. I haven’t had any issues since I started doing this. I hope this helps someone!

Hey :) very nice video and photos. I saw how you load the film in the m6 and if I remember correctly the way you are doing it is not as the instruction manual describes it. The bottom base plate is designed in a way that you do not need to align the holes of the film. Just put the film in and be sure that the other end of the film sits between the triangle things (on the right side). Then just close the bottom. The design of the base plate places the film in a perfect way.

Been there done that on the phantom roll... Tip: The rewind knob will rotate when you advance the film IF there's film in the camera! ;-) Make a habit of checking the rotation (or lack thereof) of the rewind knob as you start shooting... you'll know immediately whether there's film in the camera or not at that moment and save yourself 24-36 lost captures. Good luck!!

Like the look of the shots, too. So my next lens should be the summicron 50mm 2.0. I know everyone hates talking about gear bla bla bla, "start with the camera and lens that you have or own and stuff - be pleased what you already have") but I think that's the fun side of all this film photography thing, watching out for new gear and trying it out. Saving money for it and having this thrill of anticipation when you finally can buy it. Woup whoop.

Hi Eric, the Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 is known to show some vignetting. It's all part and parcel of it being a more characterful lens. Also when loading your film there is no need to push the film down into the camera with your fingers. Draw the leader into position on the take up spool, push the canister firmly into place and then use the rewind crank to tension the film. Then put the bottom of the camera back and the little plastic ring device will push the film down into the correct position. Then just watch the rewind crank to make sure that it rotates as you advance the film. This way you should always get an extra couple of shots on each roll of film! I'm not one of those Internet trolls who claims to know everything, just hoping to encourage you to trust your gear to work as it was designed to work.

I felt 400 is more suitble for medium format, while 160 works wonders on 35mm. I have tried a few rolls of both and found I prefer the finer grain on 160. 400's grain might be smooth, but on 35mm I still think it's a bit too much.

Great video! Have you tried the Voigtländer 35/1.2 (any of their 3 versions?) I am new to film and planning to get an M6ii or more likely an MP. 😅As I am usually shooting indoor events with no flash, I am wondering if the 1.2 vs 1.4 will make a difference for low light film shooting? Probably black and white…

I usually find these video's so boring and hard to watch in spite of having a passion for film. It's hard for me to like people's framing and all, usuallyyyy, that is. But your framing and scans are on point with my portra rolls, which is refreshing to see, especially a video of it on RU-vid. My set up back when I was shooting a lot was an M5 with a voigtlander 35mm 1.4 mc, it had a pretty bad light leak that was a hefty repair price so I let that setup go. I now replaced it with an m2 and 35 1.4 mc v2. I swear those voigtlander 35 1.4 lens are an underrated piece of art. My favorite lens that I'll probably never replace. Thanks for a great video upload again, be safe and take care!

@bo_norris 3 года назад
@@EricFloberg Oh okay, then definitely not. It's kind of tough finding a square metal hood for this lens imo. Especially with the cutout for the viewfinder. My original voigtlander that I had on my m5 already had a 3D printed square hood on it from the previous owner, but this time around I voigtlander a brand new lens and I'm still looking for a hood to throw on it. Trying to stick to square hoods, they just look better imo. Especially when they're metal! Hahah.
