WHAAAAAAT THIS MOVIE WAS NOT WHAT I HAD EXPECTED AT ALL
From the beginning, you could tell I assumed it was something much different, but after the realization everything begins to click oh so well and I think this has to be in my top 2 favorite X-Men films so far. I say that often but they've honestly been hitting it out of the park with the most recent ones and blowing others out of the water. I also LOVE that the "Perfection" gif came from this - I HAD NO IDEA
It was a great origin story, and extremely sad by the end. But it all makes sense. And it makes me that much sadder thinking about it all over again. But I think it was wonderfully done and really captured your attention with the details included.
Thank you everyone!! I really hope you enjoy! And let me know if there's anything I could do to help make the videos more entertaining.
Have a wonderful day 🌻

That scene in the Argentinian bar is one of my favourites in the entire X-Men franchise, if not cinema as a whole. The sheer ratcheting tension as those goddamn animals realise he's onto them, the VERY slightly unhinged cheerfulness in Erik in places that make him look the kind of angry that can put a fist through a plank, the slow beer-drinking together when they come to understand what he knew when he walked in - that there's going to be a murder in this room. And of course the rewatch bonus of the barman having a German pistol. It's just freaking masterful. The music underscores it perfectly.

I always felt it was extremely overrated and primarily carried by the cast. The writing was half great, half abysmal. I still think a complete reboot with the _actual_ first class roster (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel, Iceman) would've been far better. Fox was scared and tried to have it both ways with this decent kind-of-reboot-but-not-really thing they tried with First Class... before needing to _attempt_ immediately after to correct the continuity mistakes that even this movie added.

Elastic was invented in 1845. They definitely had it in the 1960s. Garter belts exist because elastic has an annoying tendency to just roll down when it's on a human thigh. But yeah, you're right that it's funny when people think that such things were invented just to be "sexy" or decorative.

Michael Fassbender as young Magneto out for revenge was perfect. (As was his theme music) At the time, they were originally gonna do a series of X-Men Origins movies, including Magneto; but I guess after the reception of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, they decided to give up on the idea and integrate it into an X-Men movie instead. Which is ironic, because if it was like this, people would have loved an entire movie about Magneto.

This is one of my all-time favorite comicbook movies. The thing about this movie that I like best is the relationship between Charles and Erik. To me Fassbender brings so much depth and emotion to Magneto. Also in the early X-Men comics Magneto was just another villain. No big deal. Then in the 1970s Chris Claremont started writing the X-Men comic and he did wonderful things with Magneto's character.

FYI, if you have time, watch some videos about the mutant Darwin. He is actually almost completely unkillable because he adapts instantly to whatever is trying to kill him. In this movie, Darwin should not have died, he should have just automatically inherited one of the Summers brothers immunity to that power and believe it or not, it still would probably not even be in the top 10 of the craziest things he's survived.

@CaptainAmercia
@CaptainAmercia Год назад
I really do like this film but Darwin was done dirty and the whole camera cutting to him when they mention "Slave" was just pretty on the nose and not pulled off well at all. Darwin simply cannot die as his body automatically adapts to any situation or environment making it impossible to kill him without an extremally powerful source of power like infinity Stone levels. It's the fun of his character to see how his body adapts to a situation from simply teleporting away to turning into a God of Death it's just imposable for him to die like we see in this film. But I still enjoy this movie even with the weak writing in some aspects both Michael Fassbender and James MacAvoy carry the film. Love how they showcased Charles as being a dick something we don't really see in the original movies even though comic Charles is an asshole at times. Days of Future Past is much better both from a narrative and writing standpoint while The Wolverine is pretty good as well. The other movies fall apart pretty fast but thankfully Deadpool 1 & 2 along with Logan are amazing. Haven't watched The New Mutants show but heard it's pretty meh releasing at a time when Disney were buying Fox so they kind of didn't put much effort into it. This is the same case for the later X-Men movies as well. Sebastian Shaw is a cool villain but he isn't really Sebastian Shaw in this film but a mix of Marvel characters. Maybe because of film rights etc but I do believe they were going to use Mr. Sinister for this film but couldn't or decided to keep him for a future film. Shaw in this film does dive off massive Mr. Sinister vibes, also a Nazi scientist so of course big Arnim Zola vibes who showed up Captain America The First Avenger and as a computer AI in Winter Solider. The main story of this movie is pretty much the plan of the Mutant Master from 1967 who once nearly started a nuclear war between America and Russia so he could take over once they decided each other. Pretty much the plot of this film and even featured the original First Class members. Another aspect I did like is how campy this movie can be at times really pulling from the 1960s First Class comic. The original First Class members in the comic was a little different featuring Angel Marvel Girl who was Jean Grey Cyclops, Iceman and Beast who was in this movie. The characters you're more aware of like Wolverine, Storm etc they were introduced in the 1970s roster with each decade new members were introduced for example the New Mutants comics from the 1980s which were extremally popular and introduced characters like Deadpool and Cable. New Mutants are amazing and heavily inspired the 1990s Cartoon along with comic's releasing in the 1990s. Hopefully the MCU does a good job at pulling off X-Men hopefully in more comic accurate outfits rather than the Black leather we got in the original films. Do like the Yellow and Blue outfits in this film that are pulled from the comic but so far we still have to see really good X-Men outfits with Deadpool just having the best.

To me, when Charles says the men on the ships are "just following orders" to a survivor of the Holocaust, it shows that despite his good intentions and principled instruction, there's a cluelessness in his idealism. He simply does not understand cruelty in the world. Erik has lived through that cruelty. But when he says "never again", he is closing off any possibility of co-existence of mutants and non-mutants, putting both sides on a course of mutual destruction. Your bafflement at Moira's undergarments is so cute! They're period-appropriate - pantyhose and tights were not common everyday wear until the mid- to late-1960s and then only when miniskirts really came into vogue. Many women still wore girdles or garter belts and stockings well into the early 1970s because they found pantyhose to be uncomfortable. (And if you got a run, you had to replace the entire pair instead of just one stocking.) My own mom didn't wear pantyhose until the mid-70s because she hated them.

Pantyhose were introduced to the world until 1959 and they didn't become truly popular until the mid- to late 60s, and even then it was mostly with younger women who wanted them to wear with mini skirts, because a mini didn't hide the garter straps. Pantyhose didn't fully replace stockings and garter belts until the late 60s/early 70s when it became more economical to buy hose, at which point stockings with garter belts became more of a "luxury buy" relegated to high-end lingerie stores.

That bar scene is my favorite. How has Michael Fassbender done not one but TWO super tense scenes set in a bar where he speaks German to Nazi officers, and it’s revealed he is actually on a mission to kill nazis. (The Inglorious Basterds scene was a bit more masterfully done, but comparing a Tarantino film to a superhero film isn’t a particularly fair comparison).

@6:25, in the 1960s thigh highs and a garter were considered normal foundation clothing for a proper lady to wear. Back in those days people really put on a lot of layers just to be out and about.

Even though the story and timelines really don't jive, which a lot of the MCU movies are infamous for, it fills in a lot of the back stories. Even the yellow suits are a great throw-back to the original comic books. It is really good, especially the casting. It's hard to not give away any spoilers especially for "X-Men Days of Future Past".

@6:14: thigh-highs (usually called "stockings") and a garter belt were the "pantyhose" of the 1960s. Corsets were still pretty popular too, not feshishwear the way they are now.

You'll notice going forward that the series centers mainly around Mystique. Why? Because she's Jennifer Lawrence. You'll also notice that she tends to be her human self more than her blue self. Why? Because she's Jennifer Lawrence! (And Jennifer Lawrence hates wearing the Mystique makeup). When she signed on to do these movies she wasn't famous yet but once she became a star the writers adjusted the scripts accordingly to focus more on her and therefore sell more tickets

You're absolutely right, Charles has always cared about other people.. one of the reasons why is because his power is to enter someone's mind and effectively BE that person.. he feels other people's emotions and shares their thoughts.. he cares about other people's well being because he's capable of BEING them.. Also, you're also right about Eric adopting some of Shaws characteristics and personality.. as Eric himself said, he's Frankensteins monster and Shaw was his creator.. Shaw made Eric the monster that he is, and he knows it..

Oddly enough, this is similar to the actual start of the X-Men comic, except Magneto was already a villain, and Mystique wouldn't show up until the 1980s. The original X-Men were Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Iceman, Angel, and Beast. And as in the movie Hank at first appeared fairly normal.

Jennifer Lawrence is the singular reason this version of the franchise failed. She demanded the story be about her, thus making Mistique a more important character and center stage unlike in the comics. Just proof that its not always best to go after the biggest names for a character.

It’s funny that you mention that Erik adopted Shaws mentality about the state of the world. A lot of people miss that. But here’s the thing, Erik hates Shaw as a person. For what he did to him as a child and to his mother. He absolutely despised him for that reason alone. He never once said he disagreed with what he was doing

Be warned about the First Class movies.... They're good, but they're not prequels - more of a soft reboot. The timelines and event do not line up with what you know from the original X-Men trilogy.
