A playthrough of Capcom's 1998 versus-fighting game for the Sony PlayStation, X-Men vs. Street Fighter.
Played through on the four-star difficulty level with Sabretooth as the primary fighter and Juggernaut as the supporting attack character.
I played this back when it first came out on the PlayStation, and at the time I loved it. Not being familiar with the arcade or the Saturn versions, I didn't see anything wrong with it. It was fast-moving, it was colorful, and it felt like Street Fighter. What more could you ask for?
Well, in the years following, I came to understand why this port was panned so badly. It's a hideous butchering of the arcade game, but if you take it on its own and can avoid comparing it to the Saturn port or the arcade original, it's a just another cartoony, bombastic, classically-styled Capcom fighter. It's quite good when you look it at it through that lens.
However, those other versions are widely available and easy to find and play these days. And when you play them and then come back to this one, you suddenly realize all of the compromises that were made in bringing this to the PS1. The limited RAM in the PlayStation and it's limited sprite-processing abilities resulted in, like so many late 90s Capcom 2D fighters ported from the CPS2 arcade hardware, the cutting of important gameplay features and a good deal of the animation. It also had some pretty brutal load times.
The tag-team feature is completely gone - your secondary character's role is now limited to a single assist move that brings him or her on-screen for a couple of seconds, whereas in the other versions you can swap between the characters on the fly. The character animations, especially on the larger character sprites, has been hit pretty badly - many of the characters now have about half of their original frames of animation. And even with these compromises, the game still slows to a crawl when too many things are flying across the screen at once!
Still, like I said, if you don't compare it to the other versions, this still plays like a good old 2D Capcom fighter, and is still quite enjoyable as it is. If you insist on an arcade-accurate experience, though, you'd do better to pass on this. The Sega Saturn port is the only one that managed to do justice to the coin-op original.

This and Marvel VS Capcom on PS1 get a lot of flack for not being that great but when you grew up with this and all the other Capcom PS1 ports you where thankful just to have a watered down version of this at home.

Not everyone could afford to own multiple consoles when these things were still up and running and getting new games either. Not everyone was willing to buy all three systems. There were families that had one for their home. And worked with what was available on that console. For us it was the N64. MK Trilogy didn’t have the PS1 character roster. But, it had less loading times. Played just as good. And is the most popular port of the game in 2024.

I loved this game way back, but it's really only worth playing if you can take it on its own merits. It's a hopeless comparison if you're going to compare it to the Sega Saturn port or the original arcade game.

NintendoComplete Question for you. Why does this game look and play well while the other 2d fighter (sf vs xmen?I'm) you just posted ran like crap? CDs can hold 600 megs+ and certainly the arcade roms weren't larger than that? Just curious. Edit: nevermind I'm retarded. This is PS1 not snes derp.
@NintendoComplete
@NintendoComplete 6 лет назад
Kurtis Rinker The other one was a SNES game. The PS1 version didn't come close to the arcade, but it was still a helluva lot more capable than the SNES. And RAM and access speed make a huge difference. Just because a CD can hold that much doesn't mean the system has immediate access to all of it. It has to load it from the disc (and the PS1 had a 2x cd-rom, so the max sustained transfer rate would be around 250k/sec), and it can only hold so much as the system's ram will allow without stopping the game to load more from the CD.

Yes. A 1 on 1 version similar to “Marvel Super Heroes” would have worked better both visually and performance wise. But, it’s not just because I’m use to the Arcade/Saturn versions. Loading times, frame rate, slowdown. There are better running 2D fighters on the PS1. Yet, I understand someone liking it if they never played the original. It still has all the characters and super moves. It’s just unplayable to fans of the arcade version.

@@user-jx7bh1lx4q Oh. That. I remember reading that the Saturn is difficult emulate. The original arcade version of X-men Vs Street runs great on an emulator. But, if it needs to be the Saturn, what I use is an SD card reader called Fenrir cooked up to a real Sega Saturn. I also purchased all 4 original Ram expansion carts. And I use a classic CRT television to play the games with an authentic experience without needing to buy pricy original games online. That’s my method because the disc reader eventually wears out or else I would just buy bootleg copies. The only thing about my Fenrir is that I initially need to wait 2 minutes or so then restart the Saturn before playing the games. I only need to do this once every time I play. This might be an issue exclusive to my device but I would definitely check reviews on other SD card readers to find out which one is best for you. Good luck!👍

The one big thing I hated about the arcade and Saturn versions, it was always the same team ups by the CPU each and every single damned time you played, the thing I hated about this port, it could've been a far, far better port, but that RAM bottleneck ensured it couldn't.

I don't think so. The PS1 wasn't really design for 2-d games, especially this type, that required massive amounts of Ram for sprite animation and gameplay mechanics.

@WizardOfWor
@WizardOfWor Год назад
That’s because of the PS1’s limited amount of RAM inside of the console. Blame Sony for that. The animations of this game on the Arcade & the Sega Saturn versions were more superior.
@Darknight0681
@Darknight0681 5 месяцев назад
it wasn't just the animations (which were cut by as much as 75% with Juggernaut). The audio took a dive with severe compression too. Backgrounds lost animations and specific details too. Certain effects were made extremely low resolution. But hey, the PS1 wasn't really made to do this and neither was any system after this either. The only reason new consoles get away with it is simply because of RAM and GPU power. An advantage the Saturn had aside from the RAM cart was the fact it could do palleted raster based backgrounds just like those 16bit arcade games, so that was also a memory saver.
