X-Plane 11.30 ATC | Full Tutorial 

Another nice bit of useful content ! Thanks Q8.... While the ATC system is far from perfect, it is a functional tool for the beginning virtual airmen. Let's not lose sight of the fact that you own a high functioning simulator for less than $ 100. To put this in perspective, as a accident free professional corporate jet captain for more than 30 years experience, this a great visualization tool and simulation. I would much rather have a more accurate flight model than a fully realized ATC systems. I started on MSFS 1. nothing and seen the evolution of the simulation hobby from the beginning. I train in full motion simulators with 6 degrees of motion and a multi million dollar price tag every 6 months. The stock weather and cloud portrayal is quite good and with the new particle system, it will become something quite special. With regard to speed guidance, that is strictly for the pilot in command to make that determination, ATC will only tell you to speed up or slow down to a limit that helps them with traffic flow. It is your responsibility to keep the aircraft in the envelope while you are flying. Sid and Stars are supported by the FMC, just not followed by ATC for insertion into the flow of traffic. They break you off onto a heading and then work you into a downwind, base and final, usually far too spread out. Ideally 6-8 mile interception of the final is enough to make a stable and unhurried approach. As I have many thousand hours in the ATC system and have flown many approaches that most of you have never hears of, if you are not happy with the internal ATC system included you have the right to spend a lot of money finding one that does a better job or go to Vatsim or Pilot Edge, both great add-ons and spend more money and have less coverage. Q8 spends a lot of valuable time making content to help this community and if you have an issue with a product, you should contact the author and make useful suggestions, not take a tutorial maker to task over something he has no control over. Osama, I saved you for last my friend, I have 2 comments on technique for you. I kept watching and wondering if you'd see the misaligned DG and Compass, and waiting...then you found it. I try never to enter the runway with no flags, on course heading, avionics set, trim set 3 axis, fuel sufficient for flight and full knowledge of the weather I'll see enroute. That's my killer list ! Another small but useful tip, I always marry up the heading bug with the current heading so in case I need to change quickly I can just hit heading mode and then twist to a new ATC instruction. You have a great sense of what it takes to fly and your instincts serve you well. We are all no better the our instructors, although we may be skilled and competent, we can always learn more. I am currently working on a Series for RU-vid called "What makes a better pilot ?" It will be tips, tricks and ways to organize your mind to stay focused on the task at hand. Another great video! One thing that is seriously missing from the ATC in XP-11 is that, when on final approach to land, there is no ATC notification of wind speed and direction to the pilot when the controller gives landing clearance. In real life when the tower controller gives a pilot clearance to land he will always give the state of the wind.

Great tutorial! If you're new to this game, be aware the stock ATC often flies you into mountains, and has a myriad of issues. There's a mod that improves on a lot of these problems called 'better ATC'. Have a nice day.

The perfect ATC system would be a mix of FSX ATC, and a simple voice recognition for the player. Insanely easy to do. You could repeat an entire phrase for realism, but the computer would only be looking for a few words to match one of those numbered command options you are given in the little menu that pops up. So they may say turn left heading 180 and you can repeat back the entire "turning left to 180 climbing 3000, N93DK" but the software is only looking for a few words to mimic the confirmation transmission back to the tower such as, "turning, climbing, repeat last, etc." Read backs would only be looking for the first word in the directions. Like |left on sierra, turn right on alpha, hold short runway 3-6" would only be waiting for the term "turn left, or turn right" to transmit the read back.

X-Plane's default ATC works well only in tutorial videos. 11.30 doesn't fix the main problem when ATC forgets about your aircraft on approach.

I’m sorry, but XP11 makes tons of money and they come with this ATC system. Robotic voices, doesn’t recognize squawk emergency codes, send you in holding patterns without a reason etc. They should really make something good or there must come a good ATC plugin, cuz this is absolute crap Great video, Q8!

Good overview. I agree with your assessment that ATC has come a long way in X-Plane. However it is still lacking in some areas. One of the big issues I notice is that you'll get some strange vectors to try to get you to a fix initially. Like turning a hundred eighty degrees the opposite direction and then turning back around. Kind of strange.

FSX's ATC was better....LAMINAR, why you don't learning how to spoken number as natural way, with human voices?

The only decent ATC I remember ever owning was Radar Contact 4. (RC4). It was only available for FS9/X and was amazingly good!! No robotic voices. The voices were real recordings of people the developer knew if I remember correctly. From taxi to take-off right through to landing, RC4 would guide you all the way. It would tell you reset your QNH when necessary, change radio frequencies and the controllers would give you a stern telling off if you didn't do what you were told correctly. In fact, when you landed, you were sometimes told by ground control to stay in your aircraft until an official arrived and that official would take your license away if reported by the controllers for not properly adhering to instructions en-route. Pretty good stuff for something developed over ten years ago. There was going to be an RC5 but sadly, it never materialised and development ceased. I don't even know what became of the developer over the years.

I was flying the Aerobask Robin DR401 and it doesn’t have a transponder I think but the act kept telling me to squawk 4700. X plane 11’s ATC sucks.

Hopefully when XP12 come out, I hope that the ATC has VFR option, and when you are requesting IFR, the ATC will generate SID/STAR for you, I hope that you can request emergency and hopefully that the AI will have it’s own flight plan and schedule with it’s traffic file that can be edit if you want to add a new flight plan for the AI or add a new AI aircraft, just like FSX. I also hope that the ATC use Microsoft narrator voice instead of the robotic voice

Thnk you for this very professional video, it is a shame that Laminar Research are unable to do at least an ATC like SFX that is reproduced in P3D with different human voices, here you have two robotic voices a male and a female voice vith no other choice, the realistic design of the whole x-plane is ruined by this bloody ATC. Laminar Research has asked customers how they would like to see a new ATC, every one at that time made the same remarks as I am doing and we thought that we have been understood but the result shown here indicate that either they have not listned or that they are unable to come with something developped by Microsoft more than 12 yeras ago

@Q8Pilot How do you get the radio volume to be at an equal level between the pilot and ATC?? When I use ATC I can control their speaking volume through the radio volume setting in Settings, but the volume my pilot speaks at is ALWAYS MUCH louder. I mean if my speakers are set at just 30%, it’s so loud that it almost sounds like my speakers are going to blow when the pilot talks. So I’m constantly adjusting the volume when I need to respond and I can’t figure out why it’s doing that. I see that you’re clearly not having this problem and I haven’t been able to find any help with it online- Any ideas you may have would be greatly appreciated. Love the channel btw, lots of great content and honest reviews

This might be a stupid comment, but how are you to know the frequency needed for VOR stations? is it something you'd find on the map?

Good job teaching, for my part many time I go back to fly the X Plane 9.70 if I want to do a cross country flying with sometime asking for a permission to modify my planing and ATC there will respond to that.V11.30 do not respond to anything.

A newbie question: why is the a/c identified in the flight plan as 172 Sierra Papa when the panel clearly identifies it as 429 Charlie Papa? Is this another shortcoming of the program's ATC feature?

On all aircraft when it comes to automation you need to program it before engaging it so select heading mode the v/s mode then AP

Great video. But how do you disable the autopilot in the Cessna in XP 11.30? In 11.26 there was an AP button to disable it, but this has gone. Tried clicking everything but nothing worked.

Q8Pilot is one youtuber who with the quality of his videos can make the worst feature or product look not too bad. I have tried this ATC and it really isn't good, but watching the video made it look less bad. It is surprising that after FSX got ATC right and Ai right more than a decade ago XPlane can't get any of those right. Then again they only with XP10 started getting default airport buildings. I think they have fixed the ATC repeating that you are off course if you are 0.0000000000000000001 degrees off after almost two years. Maybe one day... Now I have to use payware ATC and payware Ai.

When I first bought Flight Assignment ATP in 1990, at least the ATC would let me select the runways that I wanted to take off from and land on. X-Plane 11 has the best flight dynamics for sure, but the ATC isn't even as good as the ATC in FS2002 in my opinion.

I used to fly the sim Flight 2 unlimited years ago, the ATC was amazing why can’t Xplane do something similar? The old F2U would even vectorize you to the ils made traffic information etc it was brilliant and this was like 15 years ago!

Does ground control always direct you to the correct operating runway? I've noticed that by default, when you load a scenery, XP does not place you on the correct one much of the time.

All in-Sim ATCs are less than optimal. Nothing beats Vatsim and Pilot edge.

Nice video Q8 but the ATC still needs lots of work. I'd rather go on Vatsim. I know not all airports are covered, but where they do you'll get clearance and approach with SIDs and STARs. Closest you'll ever get to reality IMHO.

Maybe I wasn't watching it with concentration, its a great vid , but you didn't show how you turned on auto pilot , or how you got instruments back up once they dissapeared from screen , of did you ? The only short coming I can see is that it does not give you any way of changing runway selection to be compatible with sim brief or is there a way of putting the data from sim brief into xplane ATC

I'm used to flying at uncontrolled airports with VFR flying. At such you tune to the airports common channel and call out your positions for other aircraft in the area. How do you do that on x-plane? MS2004 has that feature.

Good video, not your fault x-plane doesn't accommodate ATC for VFR pilots.

When Climbing, RPM should be at 2500 no more to avoid Red line. When Descending RPM should be at 2200 RPM. Cruise Speed on a Cessna 172 should be 115. Climb should be at 75-80 for best rate. Decent should be around 110 or less.

I didn't see you change your altitude when they kept giving you different ones, you just set your climb/descent rate how does that work?

How do you GET 11.3 ATC? I have X Plane 11.26, and it says the version is up to date. My ATC sucks. I don't even have the ambient radio chatter you have going on... What am I missing?

Why the atc says “resume navigation” instead of giving you new instructions to intercept the new vor? or does he means “resume navigation” according to the navigation route and vors stations you registered at the beggining of the video?

Be VERY CAREFUL with ATC altitude instructions. Twice on a night flight from KSAC California to KSNS (Salinas), ATC descended me to 2000' too soon and at night I crashed into the Gabilion Mountains east of Salinas. Apparently ATC is somewhat ignorant of lower mountains.

Hey man, great video, I'm new to XP11 and when I'm ready to land, I can't seem to be able to disconnect the HDG. Thanks for the great videos you post.

There are many many differences between what this sim ATC does and the instructions real world ATC would issue. SIDs and STARs typically wouldn't apply to aircraft such as this. Real world climb gradients and altitudes for SIDs and Stars are often too high for what's being flown in this sim.

When will we see an ATC with voices whose flow would be fluid and not a jerky flow? I find it uncomfortable to hear "Descend ... 6 ... thousand ... feet ... heading ... 2 ... 3 ... 0" Fsx, despite his old age, has a fluid ATC.

I just want to be able to use the radios properly so I can get ATIS and talk to the tower on VFR flights like a normal person. Why is that so hard? They really need to get arrivals and departures working. When I actually do IFR im doing it without filing and doing radio off landings.

I’m three years late but I think it’s fair to say that if you file a flight plan with sky vector it had better be a legit flight plan and not a simulated flight plan because I got a warning the other day threatening prison or something like that lol. They specifically say this is not a game or for simulators.
