In this Tutorial, I am going to show you guys how to get cheap working VR legs for VRChat by using the Xbox 360 Kinect. I will guide you through 6 easy steps on how to set up all the programs, as well as provide the links to where to get everything.
This is my first attempt at making a tutorial so if I wasn't clear on something, please feel free to ask me any questions.

Hey thanks for this tutorial! I don't have an adapter purchased, but I found a Kinect at a Goodwill today for a mere $7, will try this once I order an adapter!

so it would work on quest 2 pcvr just coz u have quest doesn’t limit ur options remember this link cable turns ur standalone quest system to pcvr

Might be getting a pc for my upcoming birthday May 14th and just wanted to ask a question, does the menu look like that if I hook up my quest 2 for pc or do I have to get that paid desktop app thing to be able to view the steam stuff in the menu? And btw ty I find this video has more explanation than any other vid I've seen so far. Nice detailed explanation of how everything works! : D

Welcome to the PC family.! That’s the steamVR menu and its free. OVR Advance settings is also free. OVR Tool Kits is the paid extension to OVR advance settings. You don’t need that. but if you want to know what the tool kit does let me know.

wow for you works very well, , for me, and with xbox 360 kinect + amethyst works horrible, the performance is good, but the traking is so worse, i don't understand if i do something bad, for example, i can't rotate or do poses that requires crouch so much, or do kicks cause the traking gets bugged easily

double-check you have no mirrors or windows in your area. Anything with a reflective surface bugs it out. Also, make sure you are wearing pants as it helps the Kinect track you better. Another thing you can check is to make sure the Kinect is high up and is a good distance away from you. If you’re close to it, the camera will bug out. You also need to remember this is a cheap way of getting tracking so expect at least a 3-4 second delay.

drive4vr, KVR, been there used those, and some phone app that does similar things. you pay for what you get is the perfect saying here. now i am using slimeVR (100$USD total), it is really, really good. with all the AI tech stuff nowadays, I wont be surprised camera based tracking can get so much better, with maybe more than 1 camera tracking. using AI to figure out our posture, using more camera to cover LOS. feel like the tech is already here, :).

You are lucky you got SlimeVR. The waiting list for those is crazy long. But yeah I believe if you can manage to connect more than 1 camera you can get a full 360-degree view of tracking. I think I saw a RU-vid attempt that with 2 cell phones a while back.

If u dont mind, can u pls list all the things u need for slime tracking and possibly the prices too if ur up for it, i'm trying to find affordable tracking around 150$CAD or cheaper if possible. Im getting pc vr soon : )

@@jezalgo i actually was the most unlucky since the moment i found out about slimeVR was also the moment that IMUs were the most expensive, a BNO085 was selling 200$ each lmao and i need 8. build your own is the key here. the official retail price is about 300$+ for the best imu hardware. So i built myself oneset.

I got all the stuff, just needed the programs. Now im curious if it can supplement the vive trackers to aid in elbow, knee, and shoulder tracking. Ill get it set up and come back with my results

It does work in tandem. Tracking does get funky when you turn away from the kinect and the shoulders dont always work right on some of the more detailed avatars but i can confirm it does work. If i ever get 2 kinects id like to give it another try

If I have two kinnects, maybe even four. One for each side, would i be able to turn around full? Maybe even lay down flat? Or is it not even possible to exceed one

You’re not the first one to suggest this question. I heard there’s a way to do it with 2 phone cameras. so I’m sure there could be a way to do it with 2 Kinects. But I have no idea how it could be done. Also, I haven’t read up on anyone trying it with more than 1 Kinect. So as of now, I don’t think there is a way to do it. I don’t think you will be able to lie down unless you have trackers from Vive or the other alternative as well. :(

I think im missing something, Amethyst reads fine the Kinect 360 and Steam VR Shows Amethyst has a complement, Left Hand and Right Hand are OK on OVR Advanced, but when i go to vrchat and try to the T Pose, only keeps tracing my hands. Any Idea?.

Double-check your Vrchat settings to see if you have FBT turned on or off. Open your vrchat menu- Go to settings and you will see the FBT options at the bottom, of the menu. Don’t double-click on settings cuz then that will open the advanced settings. As for the issue, Sometimes that happens to me with the Vive trackers and I have to manually turn on FBT in the menu. When I did have amethyst as well as the Kinect and that happened to me , I just exited out of Vrchat and restarted the game. That would fix that issue for me 80% of the time.

Would this work with any VR game that supports FBT? (Blade & Sorcery, Beat Saber, etc)

It should work for both, but I don’t recommend it for those fast pacing games. The tracking has a 2-3 second delay. For Blade & Sorcery, you can get away with it but for Beat Saber, the delay might ruined your score.

If you have slim trackers then you have more mobility. I tried to order some but the waiting time was like 8 month🥲.

@@EnnTomi1 yo !! ive been thinking of getting some slime trackers but i dont know where to find the equipment to build some, or how much itd be, ive got a super tight budget and cant even afford the cheapest slime tracker bundle on the official website, i have a xbox 360 kinect and i am considering it but i heard you cant turn and idk if its completely necessary because i havent actually done vr yet but wanna get into it, i feel like it is important to turn if im playing vr chat !?!? ive heard a lot of good things about slime vr. and some downsides but im willing learn how do it and to do the work if i can get it for cheap

Im currently having an issue where my Amethyst restarted itself, like entirely, and now when I have both SteamVR and Amethyst open, it only says my trackers are going through to OSC and there is no SteamVR option. Any clue whats going on? I can't find an answer for this.

Think there was a new updated that’s messing with steam vr. Try downloading an older version of Amethyst or give them some time to update the program.

Very useful video! I have a Kinect But just curious what type of laptop are you using? And I’m gonna purchase a laptop here soon but do you think a acer nitro 5 8gb ram, 512gb rtx 3050 would work for PC VRChat?

I run a PC for my set up. GeForce 3070 TI , i7 newest gen, 2 Tg of memory 32 gb of Ram. As for what laptop you should get for VR chat I’m currently doing my research on it since I’m helping a friend buy one for VRChat as well. As far as I know you need something with lots of Ram and also a graphic card with lots of V Ram.

please i beg you, the current amethyst build crashes steam vr and says i need an older build but i cant find one can you by any chance send me the amethyst version you used in this video or show me where can a i get a previous build before the current one? (NEVERMIND I FOUND AN OLD VERSION OF IT ON THEIR GITHUB)

I didn’t know there was yet another new version Out. I no longer use amethyst as I have Vive trackers now. but that version I used in the video was the latest one as of Feb 2023 before they updated it from the older version.

As long as you can run a vr headset on your pc or laptop you should be good

If I turn my back to the kinect, does it see my hands? Or does it only work in 180-240°?

180’ only. if you continue moving it would lose tracking and you would have to recalibrate

ok so I tried this before cuz I was also curious and for me I couldn’t get it to work. It does track you but you can’t use your mouse and keyboard to look and walk around . I have Vive trackers now and I tried the same experiment and I can move my legs in game but again I couldn’t use keyboard and mouse. That mainly do to SteamVr using your headset as the primary monitor to move your play space body around in game.

@@jezalgo thank you so much for testing! But... basicly it works when you not moving around right? I know it's kinda useless but still it's works. Can you also try one more experiment for me? Add to this ONLY VR controlers(no goggles). So same config, desktop mode, kinect tracking + controllers.

Controllers don’t work if the headset is not on. the only result I got was to put on the headset, move to a spot and take the headset off. From there you can move your legs but without the headset on, you can’t move your vr controllers around. I also tried moving around on keyboard and mouse but the avatar doesn’t move. Only your legs work. I tried it again with the Vive trackers as well to test it. I got the same results. Your body can move around but your head is locked in place till you put on your headset.

They should sync in together when you install the program. You should see it in the steamVR add on.

if you have the program you need to launch steamVR in order to open it. If you try and launch it outside steamVR it will say there’s an error or just not open at all.

i launched steam vr first and then amethyst and it still has an error now it say error 1:14 and says "check steam vr add ons (NOT OVERLAYS) and enable amethyst"

It should work with the Xbox one Kinect as well but it was recommended to use the 369 one.

I mean it a cheap way of getting a taste of full body. Obviously it will not be perfect but at least you can use it while you save up to get Vive trackers. I used it about 3 month till I got enough money to get the vive 3.0 trackers.

It’s meant to be affordable tracking so people can experience legs in VR until they can afford better equipment like Vive trackers or slim VR.

@@jezalgo Which is why I said if you don't have the equipment don't bother, it's a waste of money if it doesn't work. That money can be put towards slime VR. Slime VR isn't getting any cheaper anytime soon as it is nearly at component cost as it is.
