Very good and informative video. I just completed this job myself a few hours ago and my D-pad is working better than ever. I can tell the replacement is much stronger and sturdier than the crappier original. 100% agree that de-soldering those wires is necessary. I didn't heat the original sticker , I got under it in the center with a razor knife blade and it came off cleanly and easily. I didn't trust myself to freehand the sticker so I put toothpicks through the holes of the PCB and sticker to act as "alignment pegs" so I could get perfect alignment. I can see how someone could forget the audio socket, luckily I didn't forget mine. I believe the re-assembly was the most annoying part by FAR. Again, very nice and helpful video.

This works!! My controller just started doing this months ago and I just dealt with it. I had an old Xbox controller, I use that one for parts or whatever but short story is my main controller dpad started to double click whenever I pressed it once, this was only the left and right dpads doing this. After watching this video I’ve remembered that the spare parts controllers dpad was fully functional, so I went ahead and took off the dpad membrane of spare and switched it with my main controller. It worked like a charm, I’ve tested it, and my left and right are now single clicks, no double clicks as of right now. I saw the original membrane and it was fried somehow ? The inside under looked burnt but it still had the ability to be read when pressed just not accurately because of the crisp on it, idk but anyways thanks for the help my controller works good again

Hi and thank you. The 360 D-Pad uses rubber contacts. Totally different. If the rubber on the 360 controller isn't ripped I would imagin a clean is all thats needed. Run the black contact over some notebook paper to clean them. I do this cleaning process in this video for the Xbox one Controller same process for the 360 Dpad rubber, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0fX2VkLjrSM.html

Great video. Informative. I have a problem with my controller d-pad constantly pressed down, but it seems to be something different, not the membrane. Took all apart, removed the membrane to exclude that, powered it up, initially it does not press down, but if i press anything on the controller, dpad down key starts showing as continuously pressed down. If pressed the dpad up, then the down goes off. What can that be? Did you have any controller where there was same issue? Thanks!

Any tips with soldering? I've done it years ago but kinda forgot. Do you need to use a particular material for the soldering wire?
@UberMicroRepairs
@UberMicroRepairs 4 года назад
Thanks for the question. However, can’t really give much over RU-vid comments. However, any leaded solder is good 1mm or less in diameter, I use Kester solder. A temperature-controlled soldering iron, or rework station would be best and can picked up for less than £60. If you’re looking to get started in repair but just to repair your controller (as a one off) look to someone local if you’re in the UK I can certainly offer the repair and can contact me via my website or facebook. If not and your stuck I would give Microsoft a call and see if they will offer you a warranty / or swap out repair? As I always say Don't ask! Don't get! :)

Frustratingly, I've done this exact fix AND replaced the dpad itself but my controller still requires a lot of pressure for the right d pad button to work. I ensured to clean the contacts with IPA before applying the new sticker and no such luck. Everything was clean and spotless. Any ideas why mine still doesn't work properly?

Some times you need to clean the metal domes on the sticker. Scuffing up the surface underneath helps. I use a fibreglass pen. Clean the black pads with IPA or rub some normal printer paper over them.

@@UberMicroRepairs thanks. I'll open it up again and give it another go. I did use IPA and cleaned it up good - and the domes were new but maybe I'm missing something. Hoping I can peel back and use the existing sticker rather than buying another one again.

@@TheOneMatt91 Using a hair dryer on the sticker will make it peel up a lot nicer and enable the sticky to ...well stay sticky.

@@UberMicroRepairs My English is not very good. I don't really understand what you mean by "scuffing up the surface underneath". You mean scuffing over the sticker or underneath it? If you do it underneath, couldn't you spoil the stickiness?

Yes. You can just pull it off. Heat helps replease the glue and mess.

After viewing some of the most amateur and useless videos I've ever seen on youtube, I finally came across this one. You obviously know what you're doing. I've got a quirky controller that I haven't been able to diagnose. If I touch ANY button on the controller, the left dpad will start rapid firing indefinitely. The only way to stop it is to hold the right dpad button. Once released, the right will continue to fire. I haven't found any mention of this on the webs. I have had it apart as you've done here and checked all the dpad buttons. They all 'click' and return as they should. This controller is virtually new. Have you come across this before?

Thank you. Sounds like you need to replace the d-pad dome sticker. They can do weird stuff when worn out or come into contact with moisture. I would suggest either trying warranty with Microsoft or the store purchased from. If out of warranty and your in the UK contact us through the site to book a repair. Other wise you can buy a d-pad sticker from here: www.ubermicro.co.uk/product/xbox-one-controller-replacement-d-pad-button-metal-dome-conductive-film-sticker/

Hello, i'm looking for modding a D Pad because my Hori Fighting Commander had a faulty one. It uses a membrane, but it is not good, for various reasons. I tried using PS4 emembrane, but the height is different and i'm having trouble making it stay in place, even after cutting it and trying to tape it on the controller's board. I thought about using Microswitches but the space inside is too small for that. My wish would be to make it as clicky as an Xbox One DPad, or as a Nintendo Switch JoyCon button. So i've been looking for Xbox PSVita and Nintendo Switch parts on the internet, and found these dome shaped conductors you have in this video. I plan on putting plastic layers to heighten them up, so the actual DPad doesn't float around, making it feel like it's just right in place, and then put small wires linked directly to the board. Do you know if this kind of dome shaped conductor thing suffice to make a button clicky? Or would I need some kind of mecanism or other part? What does that circular metal think on top of the DPad do and is it necessary for a clicky feeling ? If this isn't a viable solution, what do you suggest? I don't want to buy stuff that won't actually do what I expect them to, haha. Thank you for reading.

Hi, sorry for the late reply. The Xbox d-pad does float around a fair bit and you are totally on the right track about the circular metal part (I don't know what to call it aswell!) but that is what gives the d-pad bounce back (aswell as the metal domes but also keeps it level. You can bend the metal legs on that metal peice to give the d-pad a more even feel. Hard to describe. I have a list of simple fixes I'm gathering to do a video on. Minimal tools and REAL genuine fixes that can be done buy anyone who hasn't taken stuff apart before or lacking confidance to do so and more importantly showing what to look out for so you dont waste time and / or need a parts or extra tools to complete the fix.

@@UberMicroRepairs thanks for the answer ! Looking at how this metal circle with little arms works inside an Xbox controller in different videos, I saw that it actually goes on top, and touches the pad on the extremities of the DPad plastic. This means it would probably be unusable inside of a Fighting Commander. But, this controller also kinda has its own system to do the same thing. So i'll probably get those domes and do as I said above : lifting them with thin plastic parts and link them to wires soldered onto the board. I don't know if it's gonna be easier to do than I imagine, since it's probably gonna have to be reaaaal small stuff, but I guess it is doable? I'll keep you informed about it if you want. (If you have any other idea on how to make stuff clicky don't hesitate!)
