How to fix your $150 controller’s stick drift: Step 1: be an electrical engineer Step 2: see step 1
@xaytana
@xaytana 4 года назад
Knowing how to use a soldering iron doesn't make you an electrical engineer. Just as an automotive mechanic isn't an automotive engineer, for an analogy. The person isn't even using the correct tip on the soldering iron for this kind of job anyways.
@UberMicroRepairs
@UberMicroRepairs 4 года назад
Step 1: be an electrical engineer! LOL. I do not consider myself an electrical engineer by any stretch of the imagination. I'm self taught through the love of modding consoles and finding the ability to play games cheaply on them ever since the 80's with the Sinclair Spectrum.

Just a small tip for those who either don't have a hot-air de-soldering station or are reluctant to subject the circuit board and surrounding components to very high temperatures, (which is wise). I have just successfully replaced a joystick module with a standard soldering iron and solder sucker and a small pair of side cutters (snips). The place where you need to take the most care is when removing the old joystick module from the PCB. By using a service centre old trick, First of all I carefully dismantled and cut away the joystick module piece by piece from the pcb, being careful not to damage any components around the module. All you have left then are the component legs sticking out of the pcb which you can remove one by one with the soldering iron and a pair of tweezers. When they are all removed I then clean out the holes with a solder sucker. The re-soldering and reassembly is as shown above and is a doddle. PS a pair of magnifying glasses are also very useful especially if your getting old like me.

Well done on the repair! I know this method and is perfect for the home gamer that is confident with a soldering iron. There is always more than one way to skin a cat! (horrible saying that!) Reason I use the hot air is for safe, quick and repeatable results. Adding extra heat to the other components isn't recommended but they are rated to solder reflow temps, it's a risk I'm willing to take because it next to zero. When you have a stack of 15 controllers to get through you need to have a strong process in place and unfortunately solder sucker and wick on these Elite controllers will only lead to wasting time and a high chance of pulling pads.

A strong selling point for the elite or generally anything Microsoft is the customer support is A+ I purchased my controller from Gamestop without wasting money on the "extended warranty" because Microsoft will return faulty hardware pretty much no questions asked. My first controller developed stick drift about a month after use and the manager of Gamestop returned it for me. Then the second failed in roughly 6 months. Gamestop wouldn't return this one without the warranty so I drove to the nearest Microsoft store and they literally replaced it on the spot. Great video man. I've had one of these controllers for years and the right analog stick has a slight click in it when rotating it counter clockwise. It's very minor and the joystick itself works fine without drift or other issues. I'm not being critical but the holes on controller analogue sticks have plenty of room for movement I think the problem is using a desoldering pump. Using wick is a much more efficient way of removing solder on these particular legs as it draws out all of it very cleanly then the stick will just fall out. And as for using hot air for this job hammer and nut comes to mind because these boards really don't like heat and it should only really be used for SMD components or chip replacement. Other than that great job lol

@@areyouserious3092 Honestly I'd like to see it done. These boards are thick and the holes are tight. I simply don't believe solder wick can be used with out prying and cutting of the analog stick. Instead of wd-40, I would use a good plastic conditioner (that doesn't leave a waxy film) to rehydrate the surface (make it look pretty again), and to slow the deterioration caused by UV rays and evaporation of hydrocarbons. Also, instead of using 100% alcohol (or any alcohol or other solvent) to clean the plastic, it would be better to use a plastic cleaner. Just gotta be sure to apply it sparingly so as to avoid the cleaner (usually lotion consistency) from getting to the electronic components.

Because the holes are so tight and the solder is so viscous capillary action doesn't happen too well. Plus the added pressure and physical contact needed there is more chance of lifting a pad. With the sucker the only contact is the soldering iron.

I have invested over 6 hours for removing those 2 joytsicj modules and little to none succes. I died inside when you just did it like that. Does adding solder containing lead aid in the method? I was wondering if it helps lower the temperature needed when using the hot air station.
@UberMicroRepairs
@UberMicroRepairs 6 лет назад
Hi, yes it does. By adding leaded solder you'll be changing the composition of the non leaded solder and in turn lowering the melting point. However with these Elite pads the holes in the PCB are so tight getting the solder to suck or wick away is almost impossible without tearing a pad. Which is why I use the hot air. it soaks the heat right through the PCB.
@MattP79
@MattP79 6 лет назад
Uber Micro Repairs Thanks buddy. It's what I thought and feared, in a way. I wanted to keep lead solder out of my kit and so away from my kids... I'll order some and just be very careful. I'm trying the various techniques to remove the analogue module. I also found solder wick and a solder sucker are fairly ineffective. I'm trying a desoldering gun with some success - though I needed a smaller nozzle for this PCB which I've ordered. I tried hot air to 300°C but with the solder used on this board I didn't get far :D I don't suppose you know what the components marked EG are on the standard controllers? I suspect they are either a type of diode or a fuse since they appear to be a protective component by their location. I'm stumped as it's not a marking I'm familiar with. I have a controller with a non working 3.5mm headphone socket. I jumpered the missing EG component by the bottom right headphone socket contact and get some audio so that's definitely the cause of the absent audio but I'm stumped as what to replace it with. :?
