Remember when we used to get demos of games with a magazine instead of having to subscribe to a service to try them out, I really miss demo discs.

Something that I think about is by both the ps5 and the Xbox series X being able to offload to dedicated decompression blocks, that frees up about 3 cpu cores. So the Xbox for example has essentially the equivalent of 11 cpu cores. As a PC gamer that gives me hope that these consoles can hang in there with PCs.
@Boxenberger

Oh I absolutely agree. Both consoles are closer to high end rigs than ever before and it'll be a long time before the min specs of pc games are even close to what the consoles offer

According to NV's data, you'd need ~24 CPU cores to keep up with decompression from the theoretical max of a PCIe4x4 NVMe drive (8GB/s). So some quick and dirty linear scaling gives us up to ~16.5 CPU cores for the PS5 (though Cerny said it's more like ~11 cores in the real world) and ~7.2 cores for the XSX|S (Microsoft estimates 9 CPU cores in the real world, how they came to this conclusion I have no idea, perhaps BCPack is more demanding than Kraken) Also I would hesitate to say it's like the Xbox/PS5 have effectively a 17/19 core CPU, because most of those cores can't do anything but (de)compress data. It's more analogous to how the SEGA Saturn had 2 CPUs for the main game + 1 CPU for I/O, where as the PS1 and N64 had to do all their I/O on the main CPU

Hey dude, hope all is well. I noticed when I copy something from my internal drive on my series X to the external, it generally copies over at anywhere from 5 to 7 Gbps. I think they originally stated that the drive would operate at 2 to 3 Gb. So I wondered if they hadn’t enabled direct storage when they released their first external one gigabyte drive. In any case, I was pretty amazed by the speed of copying stuff from one to the other. Now to be able to do this within a game, definitely opens up a lot of incredible doors. Not only with faster or nonexistent loading times, but also streaming. I’ll be happy when we see the first game use all of these technologies in order to squeeze the most out of the system. Hopefully within the next few years that will happen. I know they’ve dabbled a bit with some of them... but I don’t think there’s been any game yet that has truly taken advantage of the hardware. Please let me know if I’m wrong about that. Future looks bright. Especially with the upscaling technology starting to mature. It’s going to allow for some pretty amazing worlds and hopefully we start seeing physics implemented in those worlds and gameplay.
@Boxenberger
@Boxenberger 2 года назад
Oh yeah, copy speeds are insanely fast. That's basically the raw speed which is 4.8 in Xbox. Cause you don't have to load it into a pool or sth. And I agree. We only have seen glimpses of these state of the art technology and I can't wait to see true current Gen games in action
@kirby0louise
@kirby0louise 2 года назад
The Xbox OS only gets 0.4GB/s of bandwidth (~3.2Gbps uncompressed, ~6.4Gbps compressed). Since game copies are done by the OS, you see reduced performance vs paper spec. Don't worry about it, you still get the full performance in games

Direct storage must also be use on the GPU.
@UltraCasualPenguin
@UltraCasualPenguin 2 года назад
Why would they even release anything with 3 Gbps speed? You can transfer games to external 2,5" SATA SSD (typically between 500-600 MB/s, maxes out 5Gbps USB ports on Series X) faster than that.

All of these technologies are great, but they only add value if devs use them. I'm hoping for some big leaps once all the cross-gen stuff gets thru the pipeline. The biggest one for me is still whether or not any devs are truly using the RT cores built into the silicon on the Series consoles. Supposedly that provides compute power separate from the normal compute cores correct? Its a real bummer when devs have RT modes but it tanks the framerate. Are the cores not working as advertised or are the devs just not using them or using them correctly yet? Thanks!
@Boxenberger
@Boxenberger 2 года назад
I absolutely understand your point of view and I agree with you. Devs need to use it and so my expectations are that we mainly will see it in 1st party content. As for your RT question. Yes, there are dedicated RT cores in the GPUs. However, offloading the computation to them isn't free, it takes up quite a bit of CPU Ressources. Nevertheless I do expect RT to be used by more and more devs during this Gen. The thing is, Raytracing is still relatively young and not really optimized. So I think we see a lot more improvements over time. But: I'm with you. It's time we see some real current Gen only games
@kirby0louise
@kirby0louise 2 года назад
@@Boxenberger It's not the CPU that gets hit when you want to run ray tracing, rather ray tracing is an enormous bandwidth hog + additional shading requirements after BVH traversal. And of course the elephant in the room - current ray tracing HW is comparatively slow vs what we are trying to push through it, even if it's 10x faster than software RT. Contrary to what AMD/NV/Intel would like you to believe, you shouldn't expect ray tracing to reach where rasterization is until like 10 years from now

Both the Xbox Series and PS5 hardware offer features that can offer benefits over any PC architecture for unlike PCs that are designed for a plethora of uses, the new consoles have been created from the ground up to run games. Also, unlike last generation 's low end Jaguar Cpu cores, the current Ryzen cores are far more capable with fantastic potential.
@Boxenberger
@Boxenberger 2 года назад
You're absolutely spot on
@kirby0louise
@kirby0louise 2 года назад
3:10 - You've got a few things wrong here. HW accelerated decompression for the directstorage decompression queue is not handled by the CPU (no current CPUs contain ASICs/FPGAs for this and doing it in software on the CPU wouldn't exactly be "hardware accelerated"). Also DirectStorage's CPU savings do not currently come from decompression, rather they skate around a large amount of overhead involved in traditional file I/O on Windows 4:09 - This is only the beginning. DirectStorage on PC currently lacks GPU accelerated decompression as well as SSD -> GPU DMA, though MS is working with Nvidia/AMD/Intel to get this supported ASAP. Once those are implemented we will see true feature parity across the DirectX ecosystem and hopefully more devs will implement these new technologies in their games 5:02 - There's a struggle to get devs to implement super resolution on console because typically super resolution on console plays a different role than it does on PC. On console it ends up being a "better than standard upscaler" for performance modes rather than the typical "sacrifice a small amount of image quality for large performance gain" you see on PC. Because of this many devs don't bother with it, even if technically they should always be using super resolution if the internal render resolution of a game is below 4K

Great video dude! I do wonder when Velocity will be implemented properly, like you mentioned in the video it's been nearly 18 months we have been promised these features and nearly all multi-platform games are still smaller (better compressed) and load quicker on PS5. For example Elden Ring loads you back into the game in half the time (after dying) on PS5 compared to the X. Since Digital Foundry proved the 4 lanes of PCI-E 4.0 in PS5 doesn't really have any benefit in games (yet) over the 2 lanes of PCI-E 4.0 we have in the X/S I can only think it is the GDK letting it down.
@Boxenberger
@Boxenberger 2 года назад
Yeah, the comparisons to the PS5 are mainly 2 things I think. First is of course the pure hardware speed. The Ssd is definitely a faster one. The other thing is, the compression format Kraken that is used is an well established industry standard. Of course that helps in terms of maturity. So we shall see how this will go a bit further into the generation

So what is a realistic expectation for minimum hardware specs to change? I understand direct ml being a game changer but i would think the hardware would be eventually changed as well. Like no more mechanical hds, etc. My fear is that because of part shortages and console availability, 3rd party games wont implement some of these things in order to keep the last gen consoles/ older pcs relevant. I hope Im wrong.
@kirby0louise
@kirby0louise 2 года назад
It's less about chip shortages nowadays and more about devs not wanting to put in the effort to support new HW features. DX12U capable GPUs make up over 1/3rd of PCs in the latest Steam HW survey so the userbase is definitely there and rapidly growing As for a realistic minimum HW spec - You'll need a GPU with a feature level of at least 12_2. This means NV 1600/MX 450 or better, AMD RX 6000/Radeon 600M or better or Intel Arc Alchemist or better/Raptor Lake iGPU, as well as an NVMe SSD

The power unleashed, it makes me laugh non of them talk about a game that Xbox has released that truly made an impact like halo or gears of war did back in 2000. Phill is a marketing tool, people need to realize since phill spencer has been in charge there has not been a single big new ip released, all we hear is miss management, problems with development and cancelation, ahem halo and scalebound, now perfect dark half of their key staff has left and development is in the hands of crystal dynamics it looks like it, the initiative is just a support dev, philly the salesman has only directed Xbox to casual gaming with gamepass, lowers the of quality games and just spangled loads of money to buy publishers!!
