I'm sharing my impressions when it comes to the recent XDefiant release! It has been claimed to become a "Call of Duty Killer", but is it really so? I'll share my honest thoughts about Xdefiant after hours of gameplay, both the good and the bad in the game! XDefiant is a free to play shooter by Ubisoft that was released on May 21 (2024), on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S.

Sharing my first impressions when it comes to the newly released free to play shooter by Ubisoft called XDefiant! Is this game really a Call of Duty "Killer"? Let's talk about it!
XDefiant is an always-evolving first-person arena shooter with fast-paced movement similar to other arcade shooters such as Call of Duty.
The mode features 4 factions each with special abilities known as "Defiants", with a unique loadout system that allows for in-depth personalization for weapons for many playstyles.
Factions
Factions equipped with a Passive Trait, 2 Abilities (one of which can be equipped only) and 1 Ultra ability that must be charged up. There are 5 Defiants in total, each originating from a Ubisoft original and focusing on a key mechanic:
-Cleaners: Cleaners are great for dealing lots of damage, with their entire setup focused on dealing damage using fire.
-Phantoms: Phantoms specialize in rushing opponents and defending objectives with their setup focused on shielding themselves and their allies.
-Libertad: Libertad is a faction specializing in healing themselves and their team, keeping them alive for much longer.
-Echelon: Echelon is a faction specializing in stealth and recon with their setup allowing them to sneak and reveal enemy locations.
-DedSec: DedSec is a faction specializing in hijacking enemies and giving them a disadvantage in battle, with their setup hacking enemy tech and copying it.

XDefiant can be summed up in one feature: It has location-based cap points and fixed spawns. Let that sink in. It is not at all unlikely to get into a game and simply get spawn-locked for the entire duration.

That is true. I had a discussion regarding that with a friend recently. It is somewhat the nature of these current game modes (and some maps).

I've been playing COD since I was a kid, and I've found that free-to-play first-person shooter games actually offer a lot of things that COD doesn't. The people who say "COD killer" are the same people who said Titanfall was a COD killer, but then it was discontinued by EA (and returned as Apex Legends). They call these games "COD killer" because they dislike COD so much and are too reliant on these games that are soon to be out of commission. The success of these games depends on the developers. I play Ironsight and they are more variety. Because issue when comes netcode was a people from other countries and matchmaking at other county. That game have a lot of skins and guns that not P2W, the matchmaking might a problem when lack of play base, those people are the player who have 10000 hours to grind. Those high level player actually CAN buy to reset their KD and reset level to 1 for start over. Probably need to check it out.

Thanks for your comment and feedback! Yes, the "Cod killer" title comes mostly from Cod players that are tired of the recent Cod games, how they're designed and how they play. Mostly due to SBMM. So there's a hype building up just because of that, when it comes to XDefiant not having SBMM in their casual playlists. I really liked Titanfall and Titanfall 2. It's a shame what EA did there...Good games! Nice that you're mentioning Ironsight, since I've played it a a bit back and forth through the years and I've also uploaded a couple of Ironsight videos on my channel :)

The COD killer argument is absolutely non sensical. People need to realise that COD players are most of all not gamers that play a lot of game, they won't be searching for another FPS because they don't want to and are ok to play a COD game even if it means it's bad. xDefiant has to do its own thing, gathering a good amount of players but in no way they will be COD rivals or COD "killers", this is a completely different type of players we're talking about, gamers that want to play more diverse games, not the general COD community

You got some good points, although I do believe that there's quite a few players from the Cod community, both casual players and content creators, that are playing XDefiant since it does remind them about older Cod games (BO2 gunplay/gameplay with BO4 abilities, kind of). But I agree, some of them don't "branch out" that much from the Call of Duty franchise at all...But there's also quite a lot of fps gamers that might have been playing other kind of shooters as well, that are now checking out XDefiant. I'll guess we'll see in a few months from now, how the core XDefiant community will look like, when some guys drop off from the game in order to play something else (or get back to Cod).

@@40splishsplash Yeah exactly I hope they can keep the hype constantly during the next few months, I'm having a blast on this game as an OG COD player, the gameplay really feels like the good old days, I hope that they can keep up with the content, I would love to see some type of SND mode on this game and more snipers.

@@MrJojoringo Yes, with time they most likely gonna add more game modes. Maybe S&D as well. But a good roadmap aside; my biggest concern is still the netcode and hit reg. I play on PC, and it isn't that great, and quite inconsistent as well. This will over time push players away from the game (including myself), if it doesn't become better. I hope for improvements in that area asap.

So I think that the comparison comes from CoD 2 up until 4. I think it could be a killer because of most of the OG CoD players miss how the early CoD games were. Of course it will not take all these cracked out ADHD kids from the newer ones with the shiny skins and all that, but the old school ones like myself could love a throwback in gameplay like this. EDIT: Well XDefiant does have a lot of weird "skills" like shields etc., I meant more like the core gameplay.

this man is complaining too much, its not a cod killer but its not cod so guess what dont complain about things that are meant to be part of a game just because ppl wanna compare it to cod

Of course there will be comparisons with Cod, since XDefiant is basically a Call of Duty clone. I guess you must have seen all the videos on RU-vid made even during the XDefiant playtest, stating that this will become a "Call of Duty Killer". Mostly uploaded by Call of Duty content creators that wanted to start a hype, since the latest Cod games hasn't met their (and mine) expectations. So this is my "answer" to those who has been stating it's a Cod killer, or those who might have been wondering if that's really the case. But it's also my honest impressions when it comes to a new fps game that was recently released. Besides the Cod comparision :)

I don't like any of the game modes, i mostly do TDM in shooters. A no abilities mode with be good as well.

Thanks for your comment and feedback! Yes, I believe there need to be some "good old" proven game modes as well in the game, such as TDM and FFA. And that comes from someone that are mainly playing objective game modes in FPS games :)

I wouldn't mind if there wasn't any abilities in the game. And if they will stay in the game, I believe they need to "balance" these abilities, not sure exactly how...It became a bit ridiculous the other day when I was playing with some friends, and almost every guy in the other team was using the wallhack ability. We were constantly highlighted throughout the whole match..! The performance when it comes to netcode and hitreg is by far the biggest issue in the game. I really hope they manage to improve it a.s.a.p.

Thanks for your comment! I've had a hard time myself to enjoy Cod games the last at least, 5-6 years. This year, Treyarch will develop the next Cod game (Black Ops 6), and I believe they have been the studio so far that has succeeded the best when I look back into both recent but also older games, to a certain degree.

Thanks for your comment! Alright, fingers crossed that XDefiant will continue to do well months after it's release. But although I haven't played much Cod recent years, I am a bit curious when it comes to Treyarch's upcoming Black Ops 6 title. Time will tell :)

Considering that it already has over 4x the daily avg players, yeah it’s a cod killer. Everyone talks about cod killers but COD has been dead for years. Here are a list of FPS games that have an avg daily player count higher than cod not in any order. Battlefield 2042, battlefield 1, battlefield 5, xdefiant, APEX, rainbow 6, CS2, overwatch 2, and the list goes on. COD is in its last final months of cancer, within 2-3 years I wouldn’t be surprised if the player count drops below 10k daily avg since it’s already at a 40k avg. the only thing that keeps cod alive is the people that buy the game, play it for 3 months, and then stop until the next COD. They made back the $1 billion budget in 11 days of sales. That’s almost 10million copies sold a day. Yet only 40k players daily avg.

Thanks for your comment! Yes, it is interesting to look into player counts and numbers, since the Cod stats has been on a decline for quite some time now. I guess we could say that Call of Duty is doing a "good job" killing itself to a certain degree. But as a back to back comparison between MW3 and XDefiant, I don't think as a whole that XDefiant is a better game, even though I don't play much Cod nowadays. But maybe XDefiant will be able to keep an audience, also 4-5 into it's life cycle, so player count numbers don't go down the same way it has in regards to The Finals.

You've lost the plot my man. CoD has 100k DAU just on Steam. Ubisoft's own numbers say 300k concurrent players across *all* platforms. Call of Duty has been trash for ages, lowest reviewed it's ever been, not to mention it costs $70, and even with all that, and XDefiant being free, XDefiant still has fewer players on its own launch day. Even if we believe the "leaked" low-ball numbers for CoD DAU, that puts it at over a million DAU across all platforms.
