In our opinion, the new Xero Shoes Ridgeway are the best looking hiking boot Xero has made yet, but how do they perform? In today's video we talk about how these minimalist hiking boots stack up. After putting them through some difficult hikes we'll talk about our likes and dislikes of the boot, including everything from how their waterproofing and traction work to how they look on the trail vs out on the town. We're a big fan of minimalist boots, and we try to grapple with the question of how minimal is too minimal for a technical hiking boot. If you're in the market for some great minimalist shoes take a look at our affiliate links below! We love these brands and totally stand by them.

I bought these on launch for rain and snow, I'm not a hiker. I liked the look of the brown and navy colourway, as well as the improved grip over Xero's Denver model, even though that has insulation for cold weather. I'm not a fan of the laces though, I think they look kind of bland on the boot, so I tried a few things and settled on some beige laces that match the strip along the bottom edge of the boot perfectly. I went a half size up to accommodate thicker socks for the winter, and with regular socks and without the insoles, they're extremely roomy in the toe box. They're comfortable around the ankle when fully laced up, I don't find that they irritate my ankles. The bottom of the boot feels a bit stiff though, but they're twice as thick as my other barefoot shoes so that's just how it is I guess. Not really uncomfortable, just not as malleable as my other shoes. I have worn them in the rain though, I was out for a walk the other day when it had been raining, and halfway through my usual walk, the rain started coming down again, so I ran basically the rest of the way back home and I didn't have any slippage. For the winter, if the snow and ice is mostly taken care of, I used to wear my running shoes, so I'm not in desperate need of an abundance of grip, but it is something I do value in winterwear. if these can do better than running shoes, which I assume they will, then I'll be okay. I have a bit of a different perspective than you guys since I have a different use for them, yours being what they were made for, but I think your assessment is fair. Plus, you and I both know that Xero takes user feedback seriously so maybe this boot or another model in the future can be changed or improved based on your feedback.

Good points. I'm looking for waterproof and good grip mostly myself. I live in an area with lots of hills and it snows and gets icy for multiple months each winter. The hiking is less of a factor for me as I do most of my hiking when it's not icy/snowy out, but most "casual" winter boots aren't water proof or seem to have great grip

@@flipperzero9662 I can say that I've worn the Ridgeway in snow now, and the result is interesting. I wore them a couple times to shovel and our driveway has a decent incline. I haven't slipped, but I also have. The boots feel like they don't have initial grip on snow/ ice, but then they dig in right after. So I sometimes felt like I was slipping but then I'd be fine. I don't think I'd trust them on straight up ice though. They're definitely waterproof, my feet have been dry in the rain and snow so far. I did order a pair of Be Lenka Winter 3.0 boots yesterday which have a grippy sole and waterproofing but they have nice wool lining for the cold. Hopefully those are good for the colder and snowier days. I also find the Ridgeway to be a bit stiff laterally, which would be good for certain applications, but walking on flat ground is not as comfortable as it could be.

Do you guys have some links or ideas for insole replacement for a situation like this, where the insole seems to be bothersome?

So I just tried my Lems Boulder Boot Grip insoles and my Feelgrounds Patrol Winter insoles in the Ridgeway and that seemed to work really well! Both Lems and Feelgrounds sell just the insoles on their websites, you could try that? The Feelgrounds are felt, they'd add a little warmth to the Ridgeway. All my boots are size 9.

I am between the Ridgeway and the Lems Boulder Boot Grip that just came out. Where I live the Colorado snow is around the corner and I am wondering what you think would work better in snow around town and light hikes? Thanks!
@sonsofsever
@sonsofsever 9 месяцев назад
We are gonna answer that in depth as soon as we can! We just got our hands on the Boulder Grip, so we haven't had much time to test it out. The Boulder Grip seems to have some serious traction, but that's just from handling it, not from being able to try it out yet... I like how it looks more than the Ridgeway, and I do think the insole is much more comfortable than the Ridgeways. If you can hold off a few more weeks we'll have a much more conclusive answer!

@@sonsofsever Thank you kindly! I did get a chance to briefly try on the boulder boot grip last weekend at a shoe store and yes the boot does look better, I agree! My foot felt comfortable in the grip, but I am so used to the Xeroshoes and I didnt like how I couldn't feel the ground. With some wear in I know the boot will become more flexible and perhaps I could come to terms with the lack of feel for more traction. I look forward to your review!

Xero is hard to get sizing information out of. They tell you to go with your regular shoe size but for me that differs based on width. Any suggestion on a starting point (looking at the Prio Neo but any starting point in general would work) based on what I wear? Lems (multiple models) I wear an 11 and the length is about spot on for how I like shoes to fit but they are all too low volume for me. My Jim Greens are a 10.5 and are prefect in length and width and are, if anything, bordering a bit too high volume which is something I never thought I would say! I will say that my H-Trails are 11s and that is cutting it close in width (but they say not to use their sandals as a guide...) Thank you!

Yeah sizing is so tough with all these brands! But when it comes to Lems, Jim Green, and Xero, our normal size across the board has worked for us.

I like mine a lot, even though I called it "Ridge line" in my video. I wear only Xero these days. But I still hike barefoot👣 Insole? I just pull those out. OK, you guys probably would not call what I do "hiking." Oh, and friends say something that small does not qualify as a boot. Maybe a booty. (I wear size 6)

They are very good and light boots, I bought them. To work, they are very pretty. I think they would be perfect if they had a slightly thicker and more comfortable insole.

Agreed! That insole sucks, easily my least favorite feature of an otherwise great boot

They’ve been hard to work with. We only have one pair of shoes from them so we’ll get a review out of those when we can. Obviously we’d like them to be involved in the conversation, but we can’t buy a bunch of shoes (especially at their price point) and they haven’t agreed to send us any for review up to this point. I have the Primus lite 2. They’re not bad. Comparable to other shoes we have reviews of so far

The stack height is almost too much for a barefoot boot. You like the flexibility but you want more height which will make it more inflexible.. Maybe you're looking for just an overall wide zero drop boot like Lems makes, not a barefoot one.
@sonsofsever
@sonsofsever 9 месяцев назад
Yeah I mention that in the video, that I really like where the Lems Primal Persuit Mid Boot sits, 18mm or so. Still pretty minimal and plenty flexible compared to a traditional hiking boot.

@@sonsofsever Be Lenka has all their boot models with a maximum sole of 4 millimeters. They are very resistant boots and of a very important quality, their Ranger 2.0 model is the one I own, and it is very flexible, but at the same time it is a well built and resistant boot.

@@user-fo2zc6on2o yeah we've had our eye on the Ranger for a while and have really wanted to test them out, unfortunately Be Lenka didn't want to work with us 😞 but I think we'll end up with a pair eventually!

So not grippy enough and pretty thick stack height. I'll stick with my vivos for the moment then.
