First, imagine there are no jobs. Then imagine you live in an isolated location. Then imagine you have to figure out a way to feed your kids.
The Xhosa grass cutters of Komga, South Africa work from sunrise to sunset toiling in the fields and at the roadside in hopes that a passerby will be in need of grass to thatch a roof. While 10 South African Rands won’t get one very far, it may be enough to provide for one of the many mouths that need to be fed.
Cynthia and those with whom she lives in community are not permitted to grow and harvest their own food. As they live on someone else’s land, they never get to do things they want to do and they have to ask for permission before doing anything.
The Xhosa people are a study in resilience, persistence, and the pride that is earned with a full day of labouring. They should be very proud of their identity as heirs of such an enviable work ethic.
The saying, “I ain’t too proud to beg,” has no application to this tribe of Xhosa people. Instead, these salt-of-the-earth people “ain’t too proud to do menial and back-breaking work” to sustain themselves. The humility possessed by Cynthia and those in her community ought to be bottled and sold.
