Conversations with strangers in diverse African cultures and beyond. Follow your curiosity with me to a deeper engagement with the world’s fascinating people. Feel the transformational magic of human-to-human connection with those who look, live, and speak differently.
The balm of connection gave me Kim Vanderlee’s Voice, I now use it to do two things. I provide others with access to community and belonging and watch them come alive, and I speak on universal life challenges that we most often bury in shame. Sharing my secrets with others builds resilience and creates lifelong allies!
I have learned that we are all more alike than we are unalike. All humans have inherent value and when people feel that their lives matter, they have a lot to say!
Broadening my definition of community has changed my life. We all have valuable lessons to teach the world. Let’s learn and explore together. Won’t you join me?

It’s impossible to remedy, the conditions for growing the economy fast enough are not met. 24 million permanent jobs needed, not just jobs, they have to meet a standard of living that’s impossible at the low wages for service rendered. Housing too, rdp housing is in the middle of nowhere, the people might as well head back to their family homes because the conditions are the same, no work nearby. I watch jhb people all drive to pta and back for work and the pta people drive to jhb and back, its stoopid, Im unwilling to expand business because I refuse to comply with conditions on the next level up. So i keep it right where it is. The education department needs to answer for the national average iq of 69 even recognised by the world bank. Noone will leave their investment in such conditions. What you will find in the slums is a micro version of the greater population, it effects all the same.
Hi Kim thanks for visiting my country and I hope you will have a jolly time. On her face is what is called ummemezi. This cream is made from grinding and crushing tiny barks of a tree that is indigenous to South Africa. It was widely used in the past but not so in modem days because if not used sparingly can damage one's complexion, which would explain why the young lady is not wearing it. You have opted for Eastern Cape and you will love it as, for me , it's a hidden gem that even I , coming from there, have to yet to fully explore! People are friendly and Molo, unjani and enkosi will make you friends. Enjoy😊
The so called coloureds are Khoi descendants The Khoi created Afrikaaps 55 years before Colonialism The so called coloureds & Indians got Colonial laws against them in the new south Africa They are being oppressed Economic & Culturally The new south Africa is fake
Lady, you got the terminology all wrong. The Kraal is an informal settlement, what you may know as a slum but we don't use that word in South Africa. Informal settlement means an area of land without proper housing, plumbing and electricity etc. An informal settlement may be legal or illegal. A legal informal settlement is an area of land allocated by local government (usually in big cities) to meet the need for accommodation so that people from rural areas would be able to relocate to cities and seek jobs regardless of them not having funds for proper housing. The council/municipality provides some services like water, electricity, sanitation in legal informal settlements but this is often unmet. The Kraal is an illegal informal settlement because this land was not allocated by the City Council for such a purpose. That land is zoned for recreational use. As for township, that is an apartheid era invention. Black, coloured and Indian people, the three legally defined non-white races in apartheid South Africa, were forcibly removed from central areas/neighbourhoods and relocated often to empty land if black, but coloureds and Indians received low-cost flats. These new areas were specifically for one race only and referred to as townships. So you get coloured townships, black townships and Indian townships. White areas were called suburbs as they are known globally. The term township was used for non-white areas as a class distinction. Townships usually surround major cities. In a township, you may come across many informal settlements, legal and illegal. Another term used to describe a township adjacent to a big town or small city is 'location' as the term township is only used in major cities. A location, however, was always for black people only, but demographics have changed slightly in recent years. Please check your facts before telling stories on the Internet. And not just those relating to terminology.
I found that South Africa was really a land of contrasts. Because there are so many slums but they lie just adjacent to middle-upper class areas and the juxtaposition is a bit mind blowing. And of course there is so much natural beauty it’s actually a bit overwhelming. Very beautiful country, in my view.
Took you 30years to realize that the White Racist Domkoppe in Cape Town use the collards to their own advantage and nothing else ....Get rid of Matric Domkop Alan Winde and learn to stand on your own two legs.... Read the comments then you will realize...these White Racists feel a flying donut for you....they just care about themself....
Lol never seen slums before? All 3rd world countries have em..travel more maybe. Its just a product of government mismanagement of funds and bead infrastructure = causing poverty
Where is this woman from. Go to Rio and you will see the same conditions. If she is from America Tell her to go back and sort out her own homeless. We don't need foreign bleeding hearts to come to South Africa and criticize us.
There are slums everywhere. There are "white" slums particularly in the Gauteng area of S A. There are numerous reasons for this. In particular alcohol and drug abuse. Which in turn causes a myriad of problems, often mental illness. My brother I law was constantly in rehab and eventually always ended up sleeping and begging in the street. It's a sad story.
Thanks for writing! I’m sure that Cape Town, like every other jurisdiction in the world has hidden away places that not all have discovered. It was a pleasure both to go and to share the heartwarming experience:)
Hi. I'm looking for a lady by the name of Widaad that is apparently staying at the kraal In bo kaap.... could anybody that is familiar with this lady please try and forward me her contact details.....please
Government won't call it a slum, otherwise, they have to keep their promises and do something for the homeless, sad thing is those politicians will be reaping the benefits from the tourists, and not putting it back into communities like this,
@@brendonnel6593 from other parts of SA we don't brag that it's better, we know the system is broken, there is a huge gap between the super rich and the poor. We acknowledge that there are areas where people are rich and everything looks nice and that there are poor areas like Townships, slums with shacks and villages which we don't hide and pretend they don't exist. People in villages strive to build their own houses, it can take 10 yrs for them to just make enough bricks another 5 years to pay for roofing and complete their houses. People in the slums are illegal squaters cause they don't have land to build houses on, some build and municipalities end up demolishing their houses so they continue to stay in the shacks for many years. The strength of a Province lies in it's ability to upgrade it's poor, bridge the gap between the extreme rich and the extreme poor. SO according to me all SA Provinces have failed their poor, with no EXCEPTION. Charity begins at home.
You people come from where ever you come from to document on how native South Africans live Just do what you came here to do and live This people are annoying gees
I don't think you did this out of malice, but it's not OK to take videos of people private places it does not if they allow you that is not the standard our peoples suffering is not for voyeuristic pleasure
Thanks! It was a beautiful, soulful, and respectful interaction between all parties concerned. And of course, I had their knowledge and consent to tape and post. I am but one of 8B people, merely a cog in a wheel--despite the fact I haven't much of a platform yet, these folks truly appreciated being seen and heard. As the previous poster rightly commented, no malice intended by me at all! Which of course you understood. I plan to go back and visit again! Thanks for your support!
