I learned something new here today. Now I'm going to have to research it to understand the mechanics of it.

Hey MB can you do a video discussing why you like 33hz and its difference in sound and performance compared to 32hz 31hz or higher 35hz. Thanks mate. -Cheers

You need to re hash this one brother.. this makes a lot of sense.. people looking at these big surroundings and what not.. but at tuning it does exactly what you saying

Real talk..if you don't know what your box is tuned to ,do a sweep of hertz and when that sub isn't moving that's your tuned number...or real close

Ok so I just read a large article on ports and it will forever change how I build and tune boxes. Thank you for this video o may have never known the importance of the port had I not seen this video.

Thanks for taking your time to educate. I feel like this info is geared more for spl than daily music. At least without extra context. Most people who listen to music are playing above and below tuning, because music is dynamic. There isn't 1 parameter that is the "be all end all". But, more xmax can allow you to have more bandwidth, without reaching mechanical limits, or having to sacrifice output for cone control outside of tuning.

My enclosure is tuned to 32. With 24mm of Xmax playing at that frequency on +2000rms they don't even flinch, just rocks everyrhing....BLISS......LOL

People want high xmaxx for ported boxes cuz they don't set their subsonic filters to protect their subs from bottoming out on lower frequencies than their box tuning. So they blow sub or they think they need more xmaxx!! Use your subsonic filters👍👍 xmaxx is for sealed

I use passive radiators on one of my boxes. Same idea as a port but instead with unpowered woofers. I'm tuned to 19Hz and it plays nice and deep for a 10"

Do subs get hotter quicker playing near tuning because they arent moving as much?

Subs with a lower xmax seem to hit better. my u12 hits harder than my x12. but the x12 smashes the lows. Wish i could have the best of both worlds.

say A box is tuned to 44hz and you play alot of rebassed music at 32-37 also your subsonic is set way under ur box tuning. will that damage the subwoofer even without clipping? full volume/tilt of course.
@mikewalker4950
@mikewalker4950 3 года назад
It's dependent on a number of factors. The box won't completely unload (port and woofer completely out of phase) until 1 octave below tuning, so a 44hz tuned box will be completely unloaded at 22hz, but will have more excursion than anything above tuning by approximately 1/4 octave. An octave is just doubling or having the frequency. For example, 20hz is one octave below 40hz and 80hz is one octave above 40hz. Look at this graph: techtalk.parts-express.com/filedata/fetch?id=1444998&d=1593287429 Using the blue line as an example, the tuning (lowest excursion) appears to be 38hz. By about 33hz you are moving as much or more than anywhere above tuning. If pushing your subs to the max (very large enclosure or well overpowered) then damage can occur below this point. In your case, being tuned to 44hz, you will reach this point by around 38-39hz. Assuming you aren't overpowering in a very large enclosure then you'll have a bit more to go, but anything more than 1/2 octave below tuning (33hz in your case) is not going to sound good and you are really risking damage in all but low power scenarios. Clipping has nothing to do with this. Clipping can lead to blown voice coils, depending on the actual power output and how much it's clipped. Playing too far below tuning with too much power will lead to a mechanical failure, like ripped spiders, surround, leads, bottoming out, or jumping the gap. Moral of the story is if you're going to be playing a lot of this music then tune appropriately and use an amp with an SSF, amps are cheap now days.

So let's say a ported enclosure is tuned to 32hz...what happens with the sub when you play higher frequencies like 40 50 60 hz?? Does xmax come in to play in this scenario?
@mikewalker4950
@mikewalker4950 3 года назад
The further you go above tuning the less assistance you receive from the port, but the port is replacing where the most excursion would be in a sealed box, so yes and no. The amount of xmax will come into play in ported boxes if you are using an oversized enclosure and/or overpowering it. Once you go beyond xmax (this is just when the motor force drops below 70% of its force as at rest) you will still have some xmech, which is how much it can actually move before damage, sound quality be damned. Ultimately most of the time though you are not even going to hit xmax in a ported enclosure if using in the recommended, or slightly larger, enclosure at the recommended, or slightly over, power rating (assuming its accurately rated). Higher xmax will have a larger coil, hence bigger power handling, thus louder overall ported or sealed. Its all relative. You should look more to power handling and a low to mid QTS for ported subs if you want to get loud. Xmax and mid to high QTS is how you get low and (for sealed) loud in a sealed box.

I’m disappointed.. I surely thought you were going to point out that more xmax means bigger surround which means less cone area lol. So yeah those speakers need longer throws yo make up for lack of surface area and it usually correlated to higher wattage less efficient speakers.. it’s all smoke and mirrors for sales brochures lol
