C Snap Why don’t you just get a job instead of making up stories for why I can put together 1000 dollars. What a sorry ass existence you must have if the only way you see someone having enough money to buy a laptop is being a “trust fund baby”.
Stomu Yamashta obviously the MacBook is better because it's a more premium device. MacBooks are still overrated. They're charging too much and there are competitors with equal to better specs for a lower price.
*This is my first time watching any of your videos. I love your simple background for your videos! The plain background white wall and a couple crossed over lamp bulbs. Very descriptive and useful feedback too.* I subscribed man. You provided every necessary detail needed to help make a decision. Thanks, Dave!
Really appreciate how he takes a sensible approach to purchasing a product. Reviewers in every "genre" will complain and go for the most expensive, feature packed options because a lot of the times they don't have to pay for them. Most other dudes: "Yeah you can't do anything without the upgraded i9 processor and the extra 16gigs of RAM, it's an extra $1500 but its definitely worth it" Referring to a lightweight laptop that'll more than likely just run a Powerpoint as its most stressful application.
CAUTION!!!!! I use a 2018 XPS 15. And let me tell you I'm not happy with the device at all. The new BIOS update literally takes away the sleep mode as we know it. The machine's fans are always on even in sleep mode and the whole battery drains in a few hours on SLEEP!!!! I don't know if 2019 XPS 13 will have the same Issue. If you are looking to buy one of these please do your research.
@@Elimbi1 should result in the biggest jump in CPU Performance and energy efficiency since Skylake (6xxx gen) in 2015. I would say core count will probably not increase for 13" Ultrabooks though, cooling 6 cores probably won't be possible in these chassis
I agree it's weak but for people who don't need graphical power, the lack of it actually improves the battery life quite a bit. Too bad Dell decided to sell the xps line in Europe wayyyy more expensive than in the states.
I guess Dave has his own criterias and I have mine, but I find it weird that he calls it the perfect laptop. A machine that has integrated gpu should achieve good battery life and thermals pretty easily. The real challenge is when you have a more powerful GPU and still achieve those things.
Dear laptop manufacturers please add a dedicated switch on the side of the laptop that functions as an internal battery separatetor and a lot of people been asking this feature for a very long time especially on gaming laptops cause we don't use pc and long term gaming could damage the battery over time and a lot of people still plugged their laptops even if the battery is already full Please laptop manufacturers, answer our prayers
In the dell bios, at least on my 2016 XPS, you can set a threshold to the battery life, so that it doesn't go above a certain battery charge percentage even when plugged in. This can really help preserve the battery
If you can use "Dell Power Manager" software, you can set it to "Primary AC Use" to supposedly extend battery lifespan. but again, it is Dell software, so you never know if it really works or has bugs...
i think one thing a lot of people aren't mentioning with the 9380 is that they changed the hinge. much easier to open with one hand than previous models
Wow. That battery takes up half the space in the laptop. We definitely need to have more innovative in battery tech so we can fit more power on a smaller battery.
People think I'm mad for spending so much money on a laptop. However, sometimes in life you really have to treat yourself to something truly special. The XPS is the best laptop I have ever owned by far, it's also my first Dell. Before this I used to have HP laptops and every one of them was terrible and literally fell to pieces. I only wish I had discovered the XPS range sooner. The trouble is, once you have an XPS you will never want to go back to anything else. It really is the best laptop you can buy. Dell know this, hence the reason these things are so god damn expensive.
@@ananyasahoo2615 Yes, I have used Macs and they are built to a very high standard. I chose the XPS as I prefer windows over MacOs. I would absolutely recommend a Mac to anybody wanting a high end laptop.
you are awesome. you tried to explain how the old one is looking after a year of usage, which was the best part of this video. It is really important for me to know how it really looks like after a year of usage. This, I don't see from most youtubers. Please do this kind of compares more (I know it's not possible for new devices, but if there is an older version of a model it would be helpful)
Hi Dave, I'm looking for a laptop with the following features: - Physical, clickable mouse buttons on the TouchPad - High performance: at least 32 GB RAM - 15" 4K screen and good speakers - Built-in SD card reader - Very good battery life - Decent gaming performance - Must be decently portable - Price doesn't matter Most importantly: - Good international warranty. Just for context, I was using the Alienware 15 R2. I really like the new Alienware 15 (thin and light) but the lack of an SD card slot and clickable mouse buttons are deal breakers for me. Looking forward to your (or anyone else's) recommendation.
If you're interested in buying this laptop, read my experience with it's 3 year old parent. Short review of Dell XPS 13 (9360, 2016) after every day usage for the last 3 years. The laptop is insane, the performance I have today is the same I had the first day. Touchpad is fantastic, keyboard is like new (I type a lot of text and not even a single millimeter of any letter label is missing). Screen is brilliant (Full HD). Fan does turn on sometimes but only when windows forces updating. I still do receive regular driver updates trough Dell Update software which is great! Unfortunately, and in the end that is expected, the battery today has max capacity of 50% it had the first day, which is still good (you can work for few hours or watch movies). So considering my experience with the model I bought 3 years ago, if I'm looking for a Windows laptop, I would definitely buy newest XPS. It just can't be any better than this.
Watching this on the XPS 13. This is such a nice laptop, the last laptop I owned was from like 2008. I do not have much to compare the laptop to but I love this thing. I feel like I should have waited for the new, upcoming XPS 13 2-in-1, but this was still an amazing buy. This was highly expensive but it feels worth it.
@@zbridgjpxupzm Since I have 1500 to spend, I'd rather have the i5 Whiskey Lake version with a new processor, better keyboard and a bit of a bigger screen plus more storage for about the same price. I can always do a fresh reinstall of win10 and the hardware is fine if i can trust other reviews. Plus, what's wrong with the build quality of this laptop?
@@Luuk8320 I have had numerous Dell XPS laptops from 2014 onward in our company with the problems like, dead motherboard out of the blue, dead hard disk, dead LCD panel, dead power supply, unreliable ethernet (Killer Networking)....Nothing is wrong at first, but the fact is Dell uses the cheapest possible components and if the machine does not die prematurely, you are just lucky. Yes you can do a clean Windows install, but you are forced to install Dell's crapware if you want everything working. On the other hand I have never had such hardware & software problems with Surface Pro.
can you do a review of the lenovo X1 carbon? ps, the reason the material turned more yellow on the older model is because the material reacted to sunlight.
Quinn Denver honestly not sure I saw Lenovo S940 which is amazing looking. I have MacBook Pro for personal (outdated one) from 2015 and almost out of storage. And I have t480s thinkpad for work. My job requires I am very current on both OS. So I am thinking upgrade my Mac when they release new ones if that’s anytime soon otherwise I’m stuck with there crap keyboards 😂 and get x1 extreme as my windows os. I know I could do parallel but to me that is not the same because of keyboard commands. And I like having Mac for creative personal and pc for just straight up daily work tasks. Sorry for babble. If I have to choose one to do all and could survive without my Apple specific programs I would get Lenovo hands down. I haven’t event had the t840s long and it is not top tier model but I love it
Purchased one of these for a family member and dead after just less of 2 years. No extended warranty so it was taken to a local shop. Said they have seen alot of these. Design problem related to heat frying motherboard. Checked Dell's forums and verified this. So ... if you buy one get the extended warranty.
Hi Dave. Great video, as always. Any chance you could do a comparative review between Lenovo extreme 1 and the Dell XPS 15? Thanks a lot and greetings from Spain.
I really hope that the new Intel intergrated graphics next generation actually makes these devices usable for gaming or game design. The bench mark leaks do look promising
Y u use integrated graphics for gaming? U know there is no way u can get low power consumption and high performance because u need power for performance, unless you want to break the physics law of the universe, which will require intel to work a little harder
@@jackli1662 I don't, I have a gtx 1070 in my desktop. I'm saying I hope they are good because I'm planning on going to college for game design and that requires a decent graphics card or intergrated (Ryzen). And laptops with those are 1. Really expensive, and 2. Have shit battery life.
How about coil whine? Every review of XPS 13 is stellar but nobody mentions, that the forums are plastered with people complaining, that their XPS 13 gives off an annoying whine when under load.
nose cam is a deal breaker. seriously, you DON'T want to have an online interview (through skype call or whatever) with a nose cam. good they fixed it and added a white finishing. lovely! currently considering getting this instead of macbook air. unless apple releases something satisfying later this year...
I prefer having pagUp and pagDown buttons just like they're on my dell xps 9360. I definitely don't understand why brightness buttons are not f-keys anymore. I must confess I am a fun of apple's touchbar, so my hidden hope is that DELL will implement it someday...
Hey Dave. Please do a review of Illegear laptops such as Raven. But I'm not sure if you can get hold of one. Would mean a lot to me if you read this comment. Love your videos. Keep up the good work
I have the 4k touch version...and yes, I use the touch screen all the time. Even if there is a small diff between 1080p and 4k, the touch option only available with 4k is worth it IMO. The laptop is just so lightweight that holding it in ways when sitting back on a couch just makes sense to use the touch screen. My 2 cents.
Thank you for making the note about the 4K screen on a 13" device. There's definitely a noticeable difference... if you're an inch away from the display. Through normal use, it's much more difficult to tell them apart, especially if you're not comparing the two side by side. 4K panels on 13" displays are basically pointless, and really only serve to increase the price of the machine while reducing battery life. On a display this size, I'd take a 1080p panel over a 4K panel every time.
This is a premium laptop in every way, this is why Dell can charge a lot. The fans are barely audible and sound nothing like a regular laptop fan. It's a whisp if that, definitely not a whirring or anything annoying and for normal office use they are silent. I was concerned about getting a 13" screen but setting scaling to 320% makes things easy to read. My only gripe is that it isn't 16:10. If you need that get the XPS 13 2 - in 1. Not seen a 2 in 1 in person but I'd imagine they are probably thicker.
Thanks. That was going to be my question - will it run Ubuntu without problems? I was a Windows user, but moved to Mac about 15 years ago for a personal laptop although I still use Linux everyday for both work and personal purposes. I still use my mid 2012 MacBook Pro (the last one you could upgrade) w/ 16GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive, but just cannot bring myself to buy a new MacBook Pro with a butterfly keyboard and Touch Bar with older hardware that can't be upgraded. That *may* change once seeing the 2019 version of the MacBook Pro but it will still be overpriced no matter what. I have to have something *nix based and refuse to go back to Windows. Ubuntu is one of Linux the distros I run and is what I would choose for a personal laptop but the Linux kernel doesn't always support the hardware in every laptop. Great to know that someone else is running this using a solid Linux distro. I am actively looking for a solid, high performance *nix based compatible laptop and it is great to know someone is already running Ubuntu on this machine.
Love that! Totally will be in my sights if my spectre x360 ever dies... probably wont any time soon though... but its hard to consider tearing myself away from swiss army style products that have so many different uses...
The 1080p panel is not very sharp, but it’s sharp for a 1080p panel, but looks quite sharp. The nice thing having a 4K panel over a 1600x2560 or 1800x3200 is that everything will scale better if you want the extra sharpness. You tend to notice the sharpness of 4K when you look at a lot of text on the screen
@dave2d based on your video it seems that the laptop requires 2 hands to open. If that’s the case then Dell could definitely improve the next iteration with a one-hand-open hinge mechanism. And the mic quality can probably use an upgrade but otherwise it seems pretty solid 👍
I actually prefer last year's. I think the screen looks a lot better with the thinner bezels and the quality seems very similar otherwise. But I also wouldn't use a laptop webcam except in an emergency. My biggest concern is the temperatures are pretty high under load with this computer which is why I'm adding thermal pads and adding higher quality thermal paste
They should put the speaker on the same surface with the keyboard through, maybe place the speaker at the rolling bar to make the difference and maybe think about the 16:10 aspect ratio laptop, too.
@@d3exter864 I still prefer a little ticker, for me,I am waiting for sth with ood perfomance and great battery,so clevo N350tw/n350TV, with 8700T 35W(but i believe 65W cpu like 8700,9600K,with delid+undervolt+repaste could be easily used in that chassis as well). it has 62 & 93WH battery options. it has thunderbolt3 and there is no gpu to suck the battery life out of it... it's for now the only device with such capability for productive cpu-hungry apps &enthusiastics.maybe this year, intel also release 9700t(hopefully) which support the same 1151 socket(to rival the amd ryzen support for 3 generation already) and we could get higher performance altogether.
